The race was still in progress and there were aircraft on the course where he needed to go. The path he took I believe was the shortest (without trying to double back and attempt a dead stick landing with a strong cross-wind) and given that he was trading altitude and air speed without any power he was lucky to get wheels down on the runway without stalling. A lot of critical decisions to make in one minute and thirty seconds.
Could he have landed on the runway you see at 0:30 seconds but was trying to reach a runway so he could land heading into the wind or closer to the pit area?
So sorry to see you lose that beautiful plane George, it was a pleasure to see and hear you going around the pylons!! Most of all thank god you walked away safe. Hope to see you flying again soon.
