Hello guys my question is this: How much alcohol do I need to put to get the most potent tincture out of 100 grams of pine pollen powder? Is there a formula when it comes to pine pollen? I would GREATLY appreciate the help :-)
for infusions you'd want to use a potato vodka b/c it's more neutral and creamier and it won't refuse the additional flavoring. grain vodkas might be more resistant to infusions. brands: luksusowa, russian standard, absolut.
Some high quality vodkas are belvedere, grey goose, as well as skyy, and if you want to go the inexpensive route, absolut. The thing is, it probably doesn't matter about the taste of the vodka unless you're trying to make a nice herbal martini ;-) Just FYI though, in traditional chinese medicine, frying an herb in alcohol draws the therapeutic effects to the upper and outer parts of the body, because it is said to "ascend" or bring up the qi. so this would be an additional plus for usiing it.
It's good to see more intrest in the root skills of medieval alchemist's, alchemist's were what we would call "scientists" or "physician's". And are the people to thank for modern cures :).
From what I've read, I believe "Rectified Spirits of Wine" to be the the best solvent for this operation and choice #1. Rectified Spirits of Wine can be obtained from distilling Brandy, or Wine several times...I'll also mention that there are a few more steps after the alcohol has absorbed and the remnant is filtered -I'll give you a clue -"burn up the remnant and you'll know what to do." Have fun :D
No need to heat it. But it won't last as long and some plants may not even exctract well. Perfectly safe to use alcohol. or Apple cider vinegar... or vegi glycerin. I would put links in, but apparently youtube doesn't allow it. Nor can i see what I typing. Silly youtube. Good luck! Namaste
So,all tincures should start out with dry herbs ? I just thought you pick your herbs, pack them in a jar, fill with vodka and wait 1 month. Can anyone can add to my question ? Thanx
Brigitte Mars is great. I love making tinctures, I have Yarrow (great alternative to antibiotics for flus.) , Dandelion root (Good for skin issues as well as a diuretic) , & Raspberry Leaf (Great for cramps & diarrhea in kids)maturing right now.
I generally use fairly cheap vodka but I really like her point about plastic bottles because that if very true. I have heard some say Corbel brandy is the best.
I sometimes have a little vodka on rocks, and just love VOX. IIt has been is distilled multiple times so it is smooth and mild. I would imagine it to make a great tincture, also comes in a glass bottle.
I've been using Skyy vodka for my tinctures. It's supposed to be a quality brand - and I like the name and the blue bottle, which can also be used for storing the tincture because of the dark glass. I was taught the vodka should be at least 80 proof to get a good extraction. You can get organic vodka but it's *really* expensive. Because it's so highly distilled, I'm not convinced that organic could make that much difference, as long as the quality is good.
I've got two going at the moment, each in their 3rd week.... Lemon Balm and Wild Lettuce. I used a 40% Russian vodka, so in 3 weeks time I should have two pretty good tinctures!! Great video!!!
I don't drink anymore either, but was resently told about an environmentally friendly vodka called 360. I have been wanting to extract my own herbs so I think this 360 is definently worth looking into. Great show!
Oh YES! Grey Goose is VEEEEERRRRYYYY SMOOOOOOOOOTH! lol
I once made a Martini with it and I was so surprised how mild and smooth it went down. I'm not a drinker, I bought one of those small "airplane" bottles.
Kevin, I have to say that you sounded like you were a bit weirded out during her interview. I hate to say this bit her office looked like she was into Witchcraft too. Sorry.
@TheHippiemuffin She is a good soul, she shares everything she does which is delicious beyond your dreams plus nutritions and she is vegan so what is all this witchcraft nonsense about? Maybe a fairy but ...please....
OH damn! I didn't know you were in Boulder!!! I would have come down and said Hello!
You guys sure did pick a weird time to come!! LOL, we never have rain like this you guys, it is rare, so don't get used to it. Basically, all that green will be gone in about a month and be replaced by YELLOW DRY DEATH!! LOL, except for the trees. So if you are wanting to settle down, just keep in mind this is a semi arid desert, and we have drought issues. But it is a lovely place in spring and fall!
I think the one my mom used to drink is Absolute.. LoL, maybe I shouldn't answer.. Oh, BTW, for those of you who worry about alcohol in the tincture, to get rid of the alcohol and be left with the beneficial plant constituents, you just dissolve the tincture in warm water, and the alcohol will evaporate. I took a class on this in my college, very interesting stuff and helpful! :)

Didn't know that mango shouldn't be used on the skin. Good information. Didn't think about it being in the poison ivy family.

smirnoff?? i think alot of people tend to use smirnoff for their vodka for tinctures maybe because its easy to get in demand as per other labels?
Alissha301 2 years ago
you CAN make them without alcohol, but the shelf life is only about 3 months. This is when using distilled water. :-)
utastefunny 2 years ago
@utastefunny Can the water be unheated? Most people boil it but I'd rather not do that.

if you watched, she said you can use cider vinegar too, but vodka works best.
bestestmama 2 years ago
@dromycatcher Oh thanks, this is very silly indeed, bleh. I wonder if I crush the herbs first, do you think that would help them extract better?
plumevine 1 year ago
@plumevine grind them down to ALMOST a powder
deafencryption 1 year ago
@dromycatcher yes you can make them with oil water and viniger just they dont last as long as one made with alcohol

either dry or fresh. If dry, you use half a jar, but if fresh, fill the jar.
