I would not say Janeway was a poor character. She was indeed quite the captain and had pretty big shoes to fill after the other series and she managed to fill them pretty darn well.
But for me, it has and will always be Picard. Maybe because I feel I relate to him more, but he is just one brilliant character and an inspiring one. That being said, Janeway would probably be my number 2 captain.

Looks like part two of the two-part "Year of Hell" episode -- I remember at one time, Janeway breathed in this corrosive s**t in a Jefferies tube or something, and the doctor had been shooting her up with drugs, putting her on a ventilator, etc. in attempt to stem the lung damage.
All the captains are great in their own respect but I have to say that Katherine is the best. She's dealing with something that the other captains never have, yes Kirk is the original and Picard took his place as an Enterprise Captain. Yes Sisko has the important job of running DS9 and guarding the wormhole and Archer was the first in a new age but big deal. I would follow Captain Janeway and I really like this video. Janeway kept her ship intact and with most of the crew, and with no help from Star Trek for 7 yrs in a unexplored part of the Galaxy for Starfleet/Fed. Sisko's posting was crucial to keep the Dominion from taking over the Alpha Quadrant. Kirk had Spock's brains, patience and logic to back him up. Archer had Tpol and Trip Tucker, Kirk, Archer and Picard were smart enough to be Captain but not genius level.

Loved Voyager...it was a great addition to the Trek world. I miss it to this day. Janeway was a great captain. She kind of reminded me of Kirk but the female celibate version hehehe.
Ahhh the Star Trek Captains :) No debate is closer to the true trekkie's heart.
The truth is, they are all awesome. Each one larger than life in their own rite. Sisko is funny, comfortable with his crew, strong and passionate, Kirk is impulsive, witty and beautifully human on many levels, Picard is wise, deep and yet young at the same time, Archer is mindful, sweet and open and Janeway is determined, cunning and self-sacrificial when it comes to protecting her crew.
Moment 1:40 shows Mulgrew as a VERY beautiful Woman...hotter that Uhura or 7-0f-9? NOaaawT! Best Captain? Well, to paraphrase wise STscripters, she is no mere(mear?) cammander of a 'space-ship'. Like Picard, Pike & the legendary Kirk(note...he''s the Legend among them...) and even the formidable Sisko, Jane is a STARSHIP CAPTAIN...she IS among a RARE breed, indeed.
Sisko was the one you'd want to work for. Picard was sort of a cold fish, and Kirk would get you killed. Janeway was in the running, but only after she stopped wearing her hair up.

picard commanded the enterprise, a massive galaxy-class warship and they got pwned by a single borg cube and after each fight had to return to a star-base to repair.
Janeway took voyager, a small intrepid-class ship designed for short scouting missions and exploration rather than open warfare, across 70000 lightyears of dangerous delta quadrant space over the course of 7 years fighting more or less the entire borg collective only making field repairs. janeway and voyager are truly hardcore.

As much as I love Kirk and Picard, Kira and Archer... there will always be a special place in my heart for "the little ship that could" and her beautiful, courageous, compassionate Captain. :)

I like all the captains about the same. Each one has had a unique quality, which prevents me from saying one is better than the other. I thought Janeway made an excellent captain. And this is coming from a guy. I sure hope they do another series. And it better be better than Enterprise!!!
@Xellith what patching up?? apart from the occasional rations (and the cool year of hell), i dont think i EVER saw the voyager crew suffer. holodecks were fine, the constant running of the ships EMH, fine. i know it's a trek show but i actually would have liked some more realism when it came to the ship stranded on the other side of the galaxy. have a look at SGU (rest in peace). they tackled that idea a little bit better, i think...
@Xellith Not to mention Voyager went through battles that would turned Picard's Enterprise into a burning scrap heap. The Enterpise-D was a substandard ship in every way. Give me an Intrepid-class any day.
You remember that episode of TNG where everyone on that Oberth-class doomship get space drunkenness and the captain invites the guys on the Enterprise over for a "blowout" and ends up getting sucked out into space? That captain was better than Janeway.
If it weren't for Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, the various crews of the Enterprises and DS9 Janeway would have come home to a non-existent Federation, much less have been lost from it in the first place!

Janeway is just too strong for me. I'm glad she's who and what she is, but she doesn't turn me on. I am not turned on by commanding women. I'm sure she isn't suffereing because of my loss of interest, since she's got a lot to live for after losing any possibility of getting with me, and also because she's, well, a complete fiction.
My captain of choice is Picard but although as much I try to give Janeway a chance I simply can't figure a way to think of her as a Starfleet captain. No...Its not because she is a women because I think on the other hand that Seven of Nine is perfect in her role (and not because of her breasts). Perhaps its the crappy stories Voyager is full of.
I don't know why you are thumped down. Even if you think Janeway was good in her role as Captain, how could anyone compare her to Picard? Honor your classics!

janeway is the cool side of starfleet.
she doesnt take any crap from anyone
she has a laid back approach to certain starfleet protocols
she has a moral centre unlike kirk and sisko
she doesnt have the luxury of wormholes or the pleasure starfleet breathing down her neck every 10 minutes (which would annoy me beyond reason)
she has a sense of humour (unlike sisko)
she has the correct balance between serious and funny
And she treats all her crew as equals

lol funny vid but honestly, the voyager storyline ruined janeways character development more than one time, forcing her into stupid decisions etc....Just this one episode with this planet which had this temporal shifting in the atmosphere and developed like 2000 years in less than a month or so...why dont just wait one month more and this people would have the sickest tech ever but nooo ...

@lyrac thers ALWAYS an explnation 2 B imagined THEY would still remember voyager if they got that sickest tech- theyd easy b able find+catch up with voyager+help them home?That never hapenned so perhaps something stopped their speed of evolution,MAYBE THEY stopped it themselves as otherwise they would have been effectively trapped on their planet/always loose the people they knew+loved when leaving the planet to explore/expand their culture with the rest of existence being as such different rate

kate Mulgrew was shortchanged. She should have appeared as the Mirror Janeway in the Deep space nine alternate Universe episodes. It would have encouraged people to watch Voyager.

It took them a long time (way too long in my humble opinion) to finally have a female Captain. But when they did do it . . . They did it right! Kate Mulgrew was and is (again only in my humble opinion) as you put it: Simply THE BEST! Yeah, she's my favorite . . . Now they just need to make a movie or two with her in it! (The Nemisis was just way too brief of an appearance!) Janeway will ALWAYS ROCK in my book!

Is it wrong to have a 'man crush' on Kate Mulgrew? LOL! I'm a 28 y/o gay man and I still have a picture of her in my wallet. Hmmm mabe it's cos Kate Mulgrew IS actually a god role model? I like all the captains about the same. Each one has had a unique quality, which prevents me from saying one is better than the other. I thought Janeway made an excellent captain. And this is coming from a guy. I sure hope they do another series. And it better be better than Enterprise!!!

janeway took her tiny little ship all the way from one side of the galaxy patching up as they went along.
the enterprise always had the order of "lay in a course for the nearest starbase" at the end of practically every episode.

@Xellith what patching up?? apart from the occasional rations (and the cool year of hell), i dont think i EVER saw the voyager crew suffer. holodecks were fine, the constant running of the ships EMH, fine. i know it's a trek show but i actually would have liked some more realism when it came to the ship stranded on the other side of the galaxy. have a look at SGU (rest in peace). they tackled that idea a little bit better, i think...

@Xellith Not to mention Voyager went through battles that would turned Picard's Enterprise into a burning scrap heap. The Enterpise-D was a substandard ship in every way. Give me an Intrepid-class any day.

Janeway is just too strong for me. I'm glad she's who and what she is, but she doesn't turn me on. I am not turned on by commanding women. I'm sure she isn't suffereing because of my loss of interest, since she's got a lot to live for after losing any possibility of getting with me, and also because she's, well, a complete fiction.

My captain of choice is Picard but although as much I try to give Janeway a chance I simply can't figure a way to think of her as a Starfleet captain. No...Its not because she is a women because I think on the other hand that Seven of Nine is perfect in her role (and not because of her breasts). Perhaps its the crappy stories Voyager is full of.
