I have fond memories of growing up in the River streets.. yes it had it's problems but it also had a stronger sense of community than many places. My flats in Lincoln Gardens has been a basketball court for several years now...it needs more re-generation, but it's on the right track.
just had the riots throughout most cities to greater or lesser degrees, more civil unrest to come i betting.Seems nothing much changed after all those years.Thatcher and the Tories in power back then crippling the working/non working classes...putting people out of work then calling them scroungers...country gone to the dogs and thats a fact unfortunately..until we stop immigration we heading right down the toilet..that not racism its common sense.
Typical Jerkenheaders - And Not much has changed on the Dark Side....n De don Speke likkke us doh do de doh! Plazzy Scousers wiv a Gay TwanG!! .. It's, giz a ciggy lar, not... Gorrany shmowkes mate? Brick up da Tunnel!!!!
i lived in birkenhead in the 80s and there was junkies knocking on the door selling videos and all sorts everyday i feel sorry for them something should be done for this misery
@bu11d06 I was in Wallasey, Leasowe, and spent a while in the North end, I left the area in 1996, I know there are a lot of bag heads and other ner do wells in the area, but most of the people I met were decent people, who I've kept in touch with ever since. Most of the wrong uns tended to be in the North end, the Leasowe, Ford and other estates. Howevr, living in amongst them, were also decent people, who deserved better.
...and that to me is the ultimate revenge on Birkenhead. I escaped and I'm living a better life whilst theyre still there robbing and threatening each other. Still doing drugs and still working for minumum wage and struggling in life. Good riddance...I wouldnt even piss on Birkenhead if it was on fire...
...then after my mum split up with my real dad, she started seeing him. They both braught me up in Craven St and had my sister in the meantime. I became the black sheep of the family then, NorthEnd scumbag stepdad kicked me out and my mum stood and watched him. I'll never forgive him or my mum for that. I hate Birkenhead. Its full of fuckin scum and I dont give a fuck who see's this. I dont live there anymore and I'm glad. I live in a better area now where I dont get robbed or threatened anymore
I lived in and around B'head for 22 years. I finally moved away 2 months ago. I dont regret moving. I hate the people there. Everyone stabs each other in the back. Its a small community where everyone knows everyone and all are involved in each others business. Intimidation and fighting is constant especially against the rare good people there. My step dad was a north ender. He lived in Tee street when he was a kid before it all got demolished, then he moved to Hurrel rd, now called Bidston Rise
Merseyside has created its own problems,The actions of the people has eventually caught up with them,Strikes in the ship yards the docks and the factories,So the companies take their buisness elsewhere,It went on for so long that the reputation as workshy strikers will always be there,The people responsable only thought about "today" and not about tomorrow.
God I find that upsetting, the comment by the outreach worker who was a former prostitute was very telling, whole families were beginning to accept that there was no work in their future even back in 1988, that's not to say that it was their fault that the accepted it. A broken society, yes, but the wheels came off a long time ago.
As for djcurlyboy's comment, crawl back under your rock, noone deserves to have their dignity eroded the way some of the people in that film did.
1st time watching this vid,wow brought back memories,i spent some of my teen years in the northend lived right opposite St James Church,#3 st james road i believe, also lived before that in St Andrews Square if anyone remembers that place, now 35 yrs later i reside in Canada, lots of immediate family still in birkenhead, big shout out to my brothers and sis,and any relatives of the Croston family
Hello from middle class America. What is the situation now in Birkenhead? Have jobs returned? Are the people living there able to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table? During Clinton's presidency in the US, the economy and employment, pay, etc was great. It seems that the next administration's goal was to adjust that. Knock things back to where they were. How is the economy right now in GBR? Stinks in the US...
Still no jobs. The un-employed do get slightly more help these days than they did back then but the situation is still bad. The actual area that this documentary was filmed in was demolished about 10 years ago, that seems to be the solution to problems in this country, buldoze the area and let the problem infest another area.
I do feel for these people, my sympathy disappears when drugs and theiving are involved. i dunno why, but i actually think the pro was quite fit. anyway, they pulled down the rivers estate cos it had such a bad reputation, its quit spooky as the roads and the streetlights are still there. apart from the guy who still lives there on ilchester road, fighting the machine. fair play to him like hehe.
It's harsh how government fucks the underdog for so long and then complains that they're all a bunch of under educated, drug addicted Neanderthals. Essentially pulling the plug on them.
I was born into this system, this kind of f-ed up social class, but wasn't a conformist wanker, I didn't sit on my arse whining about it all, I just packed up and said "fuck it, I'm off"
Everywhere has it's good and bad spots. I live in Wirral myself and I do a course at a commuity centre in the area where this was filmed and the area looks like it's improved alot since then.
What you must remember is tv in the 70s and 80s was a fix. There was no reality tv so to gain ratings tv companies came out with all this shit.I remember this being filmed in birkenhead it was all i fix people were told what to say and do.Made good tv back then all shite now
@maltronics sorry for replyng so late but were were u get a fuckin grip later in the late nintys i collected there and people where hanging themselves in garages
lets all pass the plate round and give for the needy st james is surrounded by the needy so why is that, shouldnt the fuckin church be passin on the money they collect for the poor then the northend wouldnt be so bad or is it just me . God is rich so y dosnt he help
btw the church wont help unless they start giving to the poor oh but then they couldnt afford all the art and gold crosses and huge buildings dont build churches build houses I forget the last time I heard of the church giving handouts to the poor
was born in bhead the north end has always bin baghead city the rest of the place is no worse than any were else have bin in liverpool for 30 years y dont u film norris green netherly toxteth bootle kirby croxteth thats 6 on the other side of the river and there are plenty more u need to get ur facts striaght liverpool is in a worse state and house prices are a lot higher there
the wirral borough council is closing libraries that educate the masses, leisure centers that are a weapon against type 2 diabetes which is rife in the birkenhead area all in the name of saving money YET they continue to financially support Tranmere Rovers who hardly anyone supports and who bring zero benefit to the community
Very interesting. Could you post part 1 too please? And who is Nikki?
I was born in Birkenhead & it makes me sad & angry to see how run down it is & how little the council are doing about it. Beautiful old houses are left to rot instead of being sold to developers to be renovated. The council even want to demolish the historic Birkenhead Library, opened by George V! They've already demolished the original 1856 Library!
When will they learn that you can't BUY history? When it's gone, it's gone.
Its Not All Birkenhead Its Just The North End Thats Where The Drug And That Are Happening. Claughton Village Is Part Of Birkenhead And There's Nothing Wroung There.
Hello,Please bear in mind that this documentary was made in 1989 so things have changed. The drugs culture has a more acceptable face regarding the use of them for recreational porposes.Heroin addiction in Birkenhead is as big a problem as any other town.Claughton Village has the same issues as other parts of Birkenhead and is no better than the North End.
I agree I live in claughton and we still have a lot of problems. Though I must admit that things do seem rougher in the North End but just because it looks rougher doesnt tell you what happens behind closed doors. I feel the same walking through the North End as i do walking outside my house.
oh and ShaunChapman1992 don't start every word with a capital letter that's just fucking annoying and makes you look like a retard.
so when does the European court of human rights start to intervene here ? they seem to be very adept at protecting criminals. Ask theses people what they want / need , and give it to them sort it out FFS,cummon WAKE UP !!!!!
this is really sad that they still haven't done a thing to help the drug problem here. Neither have they delt with the un-employment if anythin the place is worse. I mean how long ago was this made, RIP Nicki luv xxxx
