"Yawa" -- Greetings in Chumash. A lot of past wrongs were done, but that does not mean they cannot be reversed. Right now the State of California is putting a lot of work together through its educational organizations and tribal councils. A lot of appropriate regulations for the enhancement of California's indigenous languages. Hopefully, Chumash is a part of this? With language immersion programs on reservation schools, which can be transferred into college credit.
The Chumash People had a thriving, rich and highly advanced culture. The atrocities committed against them by the Spanish and European settlers is almost too horrible to comprehend. If you read and study the Chumash history you will have an entirely different view of the Spanish Missions given the fate of those who perished on their grounds.
Thank you for this video. My great grandmother was Marina Salazar, she lived in Ventura and my grandmother was born in Santa Paulo, she lived to be almost 101. She passed away just 1 month prior to her 101st birthday. Her brother, lived to be 103. He lived for a time in Piru and on the Rancho of Alejandro. I am certain that they were decendants of the Chumash. So much history has been lost. My grandmother went to school at the Buena Ventura Misson.
@drmwvr1952 gosh they lived to a ripe old age at that age they must have seen a lot of changes, it was very hard to find pictures of the Chumash people which is sad as people shouldnt be forgotten.
Thanks Peter for pointing out the 2 pictures of the dancer and chief are the dancer is a plains grass dancer & the Chief is actually Alan Salazer,a story-teller
proud to be chumash thank very much for this vid aku!

How symbolic is a picture with monk thrusting out a hand towards two Chumash - it was the very end of old way of life. Hard times were coming.
