when you refer to the altered sounds b9, #9 etc.... Do you refer to the altered sounds of the V7 (in this case G7), so it would be Ab and A# etc? Or do you refer to the Cmaj7 chord, so it would be Db and D# etc?
Hey, I have this dvd, Jazz lines. When you are learning this do you analyze the lines thats Joe is playing? Say for instance you learn a bar and say, ok he's playing a chromatic approach to this e minor 7. Or do you just go right into it and learn it?
Hi Dick interesting, using all these altered sounds on a Static major chord but every time resolving in a very satisfying way, I think that's the great evolution in Jazz : playing "wrong notes" but in a way that they sound great and JP was indeed a monster in that, you'll certainly get some great melodic Ideas from these studies, Great 2009 full of inspiration,Vic.
Not my cup of tea. Sounds too tinny and trebly for me. The pick-up is placed too far from the neck and that results in a thinner tone. For the rest nice guitar, but not the sound. But that's just me. I prefer darker sounds.
Dick, I saw Joe quite a bit when he moved to San Diego years ago. I asked Joe about his JP-20 once. He told me that it was an 'ok'as one of the reasons that he played it was that Ibanez gave it to him and 'why not'? That was typical Joe Pass IMHO........I have to get this Joe Pass book you are referring to on this video. Excellent playing Dick! What page in this book is this etude on? Thanks! jim in Auburn,Maine
Some Great lines in there. Thanks for slowing it down. It will make it much more easier to lift especially when i can see your hands haha. I probably should just buy the book..

Nice job! By the way and I know this sounds random but where did you study music?
delamoursbassace 2 years ago
I took a number of private lessons and then went out on my own.

Same here, sounds good. My jazz guitar professor at IU saw this and was impressed.

No, I do analyse the lines Joe is playing. And Joe is kind enough to explain what he is playing in his book "On guitar."

That Camera angle & light are perfect for the neck ... the H.Q. really looks great here.
Glad to see that hot Charlie Parker clip back.
Dick, have you ever played an Ibanez JP-20 ?
picchaz 3 years ago
Yes I have. Do you own one (before I make a comment)?
dutchbopper 3 years ago
No, I don't own or have ever played a JP-20.
But, I really like the tone Joe gets from it on his DVD .... so, you played one, what's your opinion? ... thanks.

Thanks ... I'm with you on the tone thing ... I thought it might sound too thin with the P.U. so far from the neck.
Just as dumb, is Gibson putting only a volume control (no tone knob) on some of their ES-165's. Have a wonderful & Jazzy New Year !

dutchbopper 3 years ago
Since you are playing with along with it.. it kinda sounds like a chorus.

If I'm not hearing things the first clip soundsl ike it has some chorus on it.
ThrashMetal 3 years ago
LOL. No man, you are hearing TWO guitarists in unison. Left channel is Joe Pass, right is me.
