My PC is in the boot. The DVD drive inside the BM is a standard slot-in USB drive not connected to my electronics except for the eject button so that when the door is completely open the DVD/CD will be ejected.
I use PC navigation with BMW GPS antenna on roof, and a Trimble module with dead reckoning that required some electronics of my own to interface to USB etc.
I have a tyre pressure system as well as OBDII connected to PC with USB
I have tried some os emulators for navigation sw, but no success. I use "Navigator" for PC instead.
So far I have not installed a front end. I feel that RR and CF etc all have flaws. I want a PC so that I easy can change navigation and upgrade sw etc. I will make my own front end when I am happy with hardware. It has only been 5 years...
were you able to use any of that existing wiring in the back where the nav computer would normally get mounted to connect your pc to the head unit in the dash?i mean assuming you are not using the factory nav computer as well, would be cool to connect the pc to the obd2 eithr by using an obd2 to wifi adapter on the obd2 port and a usb wifi adapter on your pc,or by directly connecting the obd2 to your pc via a obd2 to usb interface,i wonder if you could run the rev apps obd app on a pc,its android
ok i watched some more of your videos,so how do you connect the disc drive to you pc?what kind of bus does the factory drive use?and did you have to make a converter?its a dvd drive right?not cd?so does it use ide,?sata?usb?something proprietary?and is the drive still connected to the factory unit,or just to the computer?also why not use frontend software, like RR too?and did you use the factory nav computer module too,or just the head unit?if not what about the connections where the nav goes?
ok but the tilt out mechanism is factory isnt it?you took apart the factory nav head unit and replaced the lcd inside but kept the knobs and buttons and tilt mechanism from the factory unit right?can the knobs and buttons next to the lcd still send signals over the ibus?so the monitor is connected to the pc with a vga not composite right?and do you have a restlers ibus interface?and why no touch screen?also your saying the factory nav headunit screen is seperate from the disc player?sold seperat
I have taken a Hiinfo 6'5" VGA monitor apart and placed the parts in the bordmonitor together with some electronics of my own. The CD is connected via USB. The PC has winXP and will rip just like on your home pc. An ibus interface on the PC will receive button presses. No factory parts like NAV. It is PC only. can you tell us what exact hardware and setup you are using?is that factory nav and if so then how do you connect the screen and the cd to the computer so it can rip discs and display video?the screen isnt connected to the ps via the rca aux video is it?that would not give the good resolution i see here, and does that drive behind the screen play dvd's?
Ah, what you call nav head unit is what I call Bordmonitor or BM for short. Nav to me is the NAV vomputer in the boot.
Lets see if this answers your questions:
I first used the BMW electronics for tilt, but I now use my own as that was the only electronics I needed on the main board.

I have kept the buttons, but I have replaced the lcd controller board with smaller boards just to interface the buttons to ibus.
Monitor uses VGA as that is the interface to hiinfo unit I scraped for parts. And AV for rearview camera.
I have do not use resler interface, I made my own but it works the same way.
Touch screen is bad for picture quality and I have dirty fingers. I use buttons and a small BT keyboard.
