ITs funny the few narrow minded self described rockabillies on hear bad mouthing Mike Ness. "I should know I'm a real musician". Sure, bet you can tour and play before a couple thousand a night like Mike Ness does. Bruce Springsteen and Brian Setzer wanna be on your (I'm sure very original) records like they do Mike Ness'. Jealous. And I love American roots music, but the irony is there would proably be no rockabilly revival (or it would be even smaller) w/o punk rock.

I think both artists don't get their deserved due. Brian Setzer is the most underated guitarist ever. And Ness is DEFINITELY up there with the punk icons. In fact, with Setzer's early stuff, even with the Phantoms, he fused new wave and rockabilly just like Mike fused punk and old country and western. Two fantastic musicians in an unforgettable show.

Whats my definition? Just knowing a lot about music,history of music, and being a professional musician. Mike Ness obviously impresses you which means you still have a lot to learn. Setzer on the other hand is probably one of the worlds top 10 guitarists infusing early Scotty Moore riffs with Jazz, and Chet Atkins. Its not suppose to work together but it DOES, and he does it extremely well.

I'd be the first to say Setzer is top 5, but it doesn't mean Mike Ness isn't a good musician. He has a great knack for lyrics and gives the fans what they want. Fresh music with real words behind them. I've been a musician for over fifteen years. I don't need a lecture from someone who is too much of a snob to enjoy the simple things. Mike Ness is a Punk from Orange County who borrowed the "Greaser look" in the early 90's and fucked it up for the rest of us Real Old school 80's Rockabillies ! I'd say him being a greaser and playing rockabilly for 30 years is a bit off. If you recall he used to play with The Adolecents (punk band) before he formed his own punk band. He def wasn't a big greaser guy until about the early 90's.
