  • its cool hearing them practice and seeing how much the song evolves by the studio version

  • i thought master of puppets was about millitary leaders controling troops like puppets just to get them kill

  • @wrechler

Mop is about control and manipulation full stop, war, religion (leper messiah), drugs/alcohol/addictions

  • 6:26 anybody else notice the Damage Inc. riff?

  • @thomer97 this was probably switched solos maybe

  • @thomer97 I hear it. :o

  • @thomer97

the guitar rhythm in the solo is the same as damage inc,and the solo is almost the same.

  • That scream is better than the one on the album. The rest is pretty much the same.

  • Is Damage Inc here?

  • @MrJonnathan2007

only the Solo part, which became later in Damage Inc. the solo part

  • how exactly does the recording work? do they play a whole album in demo and then like record each song or.. does someone know i'm interested :P

  • @StepsToNowhere Well the whole band would play in takes explaining the 1 2 12 3 4 5 in leper messiah they played that before they did recording individually like with Justice and Black

  • The 2nd solo is Damage Inc.

  • This is so fuking bad ass

  • I WAS BORN FOR DYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!! Fuckin epic! Its too bad that kind of shit permanently destroyed his vocal chords.

  • @Viper102650 Where is it documented that James permanently destroyed his vocal chords from the early days? Not sure Ive ever heard of this and would be curious to know where u got the info?

  • @dethmag well I can tell you he could barely keep tune in the black album demos and his voice was very cracked and weak and his voice was obviously damaged. As for his voice being permanently destroyed it is more of a guess than anything. I saw them live in Tampa and the whole time James sang like a choir boy and softly hollered for the whole "One" chorus as well as MOP, no snarl and war cry like he used to.

  • @Viper102650

which tor did you see 'em in Tampa?

I only saw them on the Load tour for the first time, pitty...last time was 1999 in the Dynomo Open Air, in Holland... which, i had saw 'em on the Master of Puppets, or Justice tour, or the Open Air tour with AC/DC (first time, we herad of the songs from the Black Album)

  • @Jim74 It was October (I think the 4th) in 2009 and it was a great concert. Hammet played flawlessly the entire night and James had the place ready to start a riot with saying stuff like "Are ya ready to go nuts Tampa!? I demand.. FUCKING.. VOLUME!" James' voice wasn't as raw and powerful like it was in the old days and he sang like a normal person about 85% of the time, even for the heavy parts. Everyone there knew not to expect much vocally but they can still play with their legendary energy.

  • @dethmag

I think James talks about it in "Some Kind Of Monster". He said it felt like his vocal chords were being ripped out. Alcohol is one of the worst things a singer can drink, worse than smoking i think

  • TRY PLAYING THIS SONG IN DROP D

  • original solo 2nd solo turned into Battery.....and trying to scream into hetfield's mike(his p.a. was louder)

  • The greatest fucking band of all time!

  • @dethmag 10 thousand thumbs up

  • i wish he sang like this on the real song ! beautiful

  • Why did they downtune this demo, but not the other ones?

    ...Mysterious.

  • @ilikezelda64 I think the track just might be really compressed. Because if you listen to drums they're also very low sounding, almost inaudible

  • @ilikezelda64 Experimenting...

  • 6:00 Holy shit!

  • its combined with Damage inc from 6:00 !!

  • @m4xfl4xst4r Urgh, only computer geek and emos say fail.

  • @m4xfl4xst4r k if its a fail show me a vid of u playing it better than the orginal artist

  • They used a riff here that would later turn out to be Damage Inc. Maybe they decided that the riff was good enough for its own song. And it is. :)

  • where is the randomize-button :(

  • i would've taken this to the frikn album or atleast make single with this in it so good quality :o

  • Think about it. The entire Master of Puppets album is about manipulation.

Battery and Damage Inc, Beating people up for fun,

Master: Drugs, both Coke and Heroin controlling your life.

Thingy: People controlled by something they don't understand and cannot see.

Sanitarium: Mentally Ill people who can't think for themselves being locked away

Disposable: Sargeants barking orders, basically owning your ass.

Leper: Oily Preachers Bilking Money from innocents.

  • @shytownmofo so true, each album has it's theme.

Ride The Lightning, Death for sure

  • @stonemason453 whats the theme for ride the black album justice and death

  • aye, it is all theme based for each album, some repeat the same theme but over all each album has a theme, KEA= Obvious, RtL=Death/Destruction, MoP=Manipulation, AJFA=Greed/Corruption/Death... and so on...

  • @shytownmofo except for the thing that should not be that song is more or a less a relapse for the call of ktulu

  • @shytownmofo U forgot Orion... :-)

  • @ElFrankus

I know, but Orion is an instrumental, so there really isn't a "Theme" to that one. Just like Thingy isn't really a rehash of The Call of Ktulu, 'cause Ktulu was an instrumental.

  • hmm i guess the last part of the solo rythm was remade and became dmg inc? as well as the solo

  • Fuckin Bad ASS Double bass at 6:06-6:15

  • In case of master of puppets lyrics, imo, why would metallica do a song offensive to alcohol because they themselves used it anyway, Cocaine would seem to suit the words better imo, because it has about the same affect , dont know about it much better maybe I should ask James someday =D

  • it has to be about cocaine because of the lyrics chop ur breakfast on a mirror

  • you will die, when i say, you must die!

    back to the front!

  • man this shit is fuckin rockin!!!

i cant stop listening to this

  • thats cool they had the damage inc solo in this song originally

  • brutal song

the speed of the chorus gives me such the caffeine rush

  • Battery is about assault and battery.

  • More like Battery IS assault and battery on your fucking ears.

  • and they played most of their first major concerts on battery st.

  • 5:58 is why James can't scream anymore lol fuckin rocks

  • @Chavez3d and thats why hes the best

  • @Chavez3d

no, this is just a REAL Metal scream... drugs and much alcohol destroyed his voice

  • @Jim74 James never did drugs dude. Alcohol...very much of it xD but not drugs

  • @redwing104 they smoke some pot back in the day... ;)

  • @redwing104 actually theres proof in cliff em all, him and cliff were smoking weed

  • @Chavez3d Listen to that part in "Of Wolf and Man" So seek the wolf in thy SELLLLF!"

  • This is about war.

And Master of Puppets is about Cocaine.

And I'm pretty sure battery is about Kirk Hammett's flashlight.

  • master isnt just about cocaine

"taste me you will see, more is all you need, dedicated to, how im killing you"

    thats alcohol

  • That could be cocaine... It wouldn't make since that it was alcohol considering they would have made an eight minute song about something they did consistently and how it's bad.

  • Cocaine has a taste too, you know.

  • u do realize the whole master of puppets song isnt just about cocaine...james said it himself

  • No. Just no. It can't be. *Shoots self*

  • James said in a 1986 interview that the song was about drug addiction; he'd been to a party where there were people shooting up Heroin, and was really creeped out by people's lives being totally controlled by drugs.

Think about it: NEEDLE work the way, Never you betray, Life of Death becoming Clearer.

Pain monopoly, Ritual Misery, CHOP YOUR BREAKFAST ON A MIRROR.

Shooting up, then first thing you do is use, then the way any hard drug tears your body up.

  • LMAO was battery actually about a flash light

  • Haha no but if it was it would be my favorite.

  • Smashing through the boundaries, lunacy has found me

    Cannot stop the battery

Pounding out aggression turns into obsession

    Cannot kill the battery

Cannot kill the family, battery is found in me

    flashlight???

  • Haha dude I said I was kidding.

  • this demo is a KILLER!! a 2 in 1 song!!

  • I think disposable heroes is about army men who are going "back to the front"

im going to study the lyrics a little more tough

  • Actually it's about soldiers in The Great War. And of course the officers: "back to the front" and "you will die when I say you must die". Machine guns and barbed wire are also featured I believe.

  • ha damage inc solo 6:27

  • Master of Puppets was about Drugs taking over your Life, slowly consuming you...

And all you know it as, is your Master... It calls to you and you cannot resist the power of it.

    A Puppet of the addiction.

  • I thought it was only about cocaine,

Because of the line "Chop Your Breakfast On a Mirror"

  • I read somewhere that James wrote this song about football players being traded or something like that

  • yea about football players being traded and retireing and getting their bodies thrash around and thiungs like that....thtas just where he got the title from...cuz the newcaster called the football players "Disposible Heroes"

  • Exactly.

It serves as a true warning to the fate that awaits addiction and being a puppet to it.

    Simple.

  • @mujuma The way I personally see it is--you are your drug's master. YOU gave it life, you can take it away.

  • @mujuma Drugs in general?? No... just cocaine.

  • @dethmag what he's trying to get across is about dugs in general but the song itself IS about cocaine. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror."

  • @mujuma now where in the bloody hell did you get that?

With "Disposable Heroes", Metallica continued their tradition of having a war-themed song on every album. Previously such songs were "No Remorse" on Kill 'Em All and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" on Ride the Lightning. This "tradition" would carry itself over in the band's next album, ...And Justice for All as well, with the song "One".

  • @N75911 I'm not sure what your refering to, as my comment was posted 2 years ago. I no longer listen to Metallica, and prefer the styles of Death Metal and Funeral Doom.

  • @mujuma

no good idea, but well it is your choice and your opinion...i listen to the doors (my alltime favourite band) almost 15 years but i really like Metallica (the old ones), too :)

  • @N75911

Don't tread on me on the Black Album, too ;)

  • @mujuma "Chop your breakfast on a mirror", yeah, its about drugs taking over your life.

    (Lyric from master of puppets)

  • 5:57-6:07

    NEED I SAY MORE?!!?

  • If they would have kept in the Damage Inc. part, this would have been the greatest song evah. Whos with me?

  • Now he (James) was a champion of riffs and rhythms back then. So damn unique and so solid and tight and flawless. I have immense respect for what Hetfield did as a fucking teenager and not far after! MOP could be one of the best albums I've ever owned out of the 1600 of 'em. I swear, after getting Kirk's leads down to a tee, getting to sound as tight as James on rhythms was more of a challenge anyday back then and even still. To stay that solid, you gotta keep practicing.

  • Looks like Hollowvale has a bit of an ego. No one gives a shit about how your band covers Metallica. Write your own shit and play it from the fucking heart. Enjoy it for you and don't ever feel the need to let others on YouTube know how you think your band covers songs that have been done millions of times by anyone and everyone. Shit, I learned these songs when I was 13 Yrs old in the 8th fucking grade. The most challenging part is too be as mechanically rhythmic as Hetfield during this time...

  • Holy shit! 5:59-6:06 is so fucking brutal!!

  • James Riffs were fucking killings. Fast motherfucking picking. :D

  • the extra solo was cool

  • So fucking brutal. Favorite song by them.

  • Would ya look at that! Damage Ic's lead inocorprated into this song! That worked alright but they had to change keys or something to get back to the Dispoable Heroes part of the song/riff. Very interesting. I had no idea that was part of the idea here. Good stuff!

  • Damage Inc. is in the same key of this.

I'd know cause my band does both covers of these songs and we do kick ass covers of 'em :)

  • I always though that the damage inc solo sounded like it should be on Disposable heroes. Now I find out it was on DH. My favourite solo ever, except Megadeth's holy wars solo by Dave Mustaine.

  • where did you get this?

  • dude they should have kept the solo the way it was on this demo

  • dude idk what it is but i love metallica demos idk y

    there so fucking raw!

  • disposable heroes is my favorite song off MOP

  • same..then behind that comes master of puppets lol

  • The original title for this album was disposable heroes and when they changed it to Master of Puppets, they just left the album artwork. So yes, the album artwork is based off of this song.

  • how come? master of puppets is about being controlled of something and you can clearly see the strings and hands in the top of the album.

  • It's about drugs! :D

  • no it's about alcohol

  • "Chop your breakfast on a mirror."

  • ah yeah, didn't notice that, haha lol. but it's also about alcohol

  • Well James did have problems with both....and chocolate!

  • chocolate? he was addicted to chocolate?

  • Yup, it was one of the reasons he went to rehab. He said in an interview, he went to rehab for alcohol and "other addictions" one of which turned out to be chocolate! :D

  • haha aweaome

  • Who isin't addicted to chocolate?! ha lol

  • Wrong song dude.

  • Someone mentioned how Master of Puppets was about control, I was simply replying to that. I'm not saying Disposable Heroes is about drugs. Do you think I'm fucking stupid? I didn't start the whole Master of Puppets discussion...

"how come? master of puppets is about being controlled of something and you can clearly see the strings and hands in the top of the album."

  • i remember reading an interview with lars somewhere where he mentioned this guy who was hanging out with them at the time and apparently he only needed a sniff of cocaine to get him going in the morning :P ergo "chop your breakfast on a mirror"

  • Bah, i prefer the song worked like this one. :(

Althought Damage is great too... ;/

  • haha Damage Inc. with Disposable Heroes? that was weird

  • 06:08, damage inc riff and solo, amazing!

  • lol @ damage inc :)

  • the damage inc riff is in here

  • I'd have to say this track hits harder to me than the others on the album, although "Mesiah' and 'Damage' are good too

  • me too

  • yeah i think among the best song in their master of puppets album

  • this song go and Master of Puppets go hand in hand. i think the album cover art is actully based on this song.

  • Ah, kindred spirits. :)

Yeah, the song has the best lyrics, catchiest chorus, is less cheesy and more hardcore than the title track.

  • man, that's some heavy sh1t. Sounds better than the album version despite the poor recording quality!

  • Where can I download their Demos?

  • On first thought, the second solo sounds sick, but then it just completely doesn't fit the rest of the song. Good move there taking it out!

  • That's because it's what would become "Damage, Inc." On Puppets they had many chunks of songs melded together before they rearranged the songs into what we now know as "Master of Puppets."

  • I knew that dude.

  • err...I guess I forgot to read that last sentence in your first comment. My apologies.

  • hahaha nice

    damage inc

    xD

    i love metallica

  • I was born for DYING!!!!

  • Lol Its funny how it just kinda ended up in damage inc. but the transition was pretty smooth lol

  • One of my favorite songs... "Back to the front. You will do, what I say, when I say. Back to the front. You will die, when I say, you must die. Back to the front. You coward, you servant, you blindman..."

  • god i wish i was alive back then, im 15 and all i listen to/play is 80's thrash

  • same here. i'm 15 and listen to bands like morbid saint, realm, coroner, razor, megadeth, metallica, toxik, and hundreds of thrash bands.

  • oh snap

those are actually good bands LOL

    toxik rules

  • Hell Yeah!!!

    Thrash Metal Reigns!!!

  • mmm... disposable heroes with some damage inc in it.

  • ditto

  • i feel like killing somebody when ever i hear this song!!!!!!!!!

  • your a comedian.

  • ????? remind me to stay away from you when metallica comes on. AHHHH

  • dude you should probably see someone about that

  • ''I was born for dying!'' Awesome.

  • This was the "hungry years" The light no one could kill. And a energy thats not real. Metallica ruled back then.

  • This song is awesome

  • I think it's hilarious when you compare state of the art thrash metal like this with the romper room garbage of today. I don't understand how we went so far downward in terms of quality.

  • this song was the first song wrote on the master of puppets album coz if u go and look for a live video of this song u can find one for james sayin this next song is goin to be on the next album, its brill they didnt write differnt lyrisc for this song coz i think they rule

  • Aye, I think it was the first one they did live anyway. September 1985 in Germany.

  • wow how did you get this? it must be really hard to find

  • Their next album will be heavily influenced by james`s "New" Melodic vocals... it will take center stage. For btter or worse, deal with it

  • the best metallica album, if kill em all isnt. the newer metallica sucks tho. think ill stick to black sabbath

  • really because when album comes out its all done for people who think metallica sold out or suck. sure their not same as they were but they still kick ass

  • Brilliant! How sad to see what happened to Metallica over the years. Remember when I 1st bought Puppets in the 80s and 1st heard this song. Easily the best song on the album and one of my all time favourites by them. Metallica - RIP (unless they change things radically with their new album!)

  • I thought I was the only one who thought that this was the best song on the album.

  • Yeah man this song rules, it's always the first thing I play when I pick up the guitar, I love the main riff, it's brutal!

  • My favorite too, it's the hardest fuckin song on the album

  • i think battery is

  • both solo and rhythm section ended up in damage inc

  • wow thats weird how one of the solos ended up in damage inc.

  • I read somewhere that the original plan was to have that solo in Disposable Heroes but then they moved it to Damage Inc.

  • yeah they were going to do a second solo in this song after james says i was born for dying bvut they moved it to damage inc at the last second
