I WAS BORN FOR DYYYYYYYYYYYYIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!! Fuckin epic! Its too bad that kind of shit permanently destroyed his vocal chords.
@Viper102650 Where is it documented that James permanently destroyed his vocal chords from the early days? Not sure Ive ever heard of this and would be curious to know where u got the info?
@dethmag well I can tell you he could barely keep tune in the black album demos and his voice was very cracked and weak and his voice was obviously damaged. As for his voice being permanently destroyed it is more of a guess than anything. I saw them live in Tampa and the whole time James sang like a choir boy and softly hollered for the whole "One" chorus as well as MOP, no snarl and war cry like he used to.
I only saw them on the Load tour for the first time, pitty...last time was 1999 in the Dynomo Open Air, in Holland... which, i had saw 'em on the Master of Puppets, or Justice tour, or the Open Air tour with AC/DC (first time, we herad of the songs from the Black Album)
@Jim74 It was October (I think the 4th) in 2009 and it was a great concert. Hammet played flawlessly the entire night and James had the place ready to start a riot with saying stuff like "Are ya ready to go nuts Tampa!? I demand.. FUCKING.. VOLUME!" James' voice wasn't as raw and powerful like it was in the old days and he sang like a normal person about 85% of the time, even for the heavy parts. Everyone there knew not to expect much vocally but they can still play with their legendary energy.
I think James talks about it in "Some Kind Of Monster". He said it felt like his vocal chords were being ripped out. Alcohol is one of the worst things a singer can drink, worse than smoking i think

aye, it is all theme based for each album, some repeat the same theme but over all each album has a theme, KEA= Obvious, RtL=Death/Destruction, MoP=Manipulation, AJFA=Greed/Corruption/Death... and so on...
I know, but Orion is an instrumental, so there really isn't a "Theme" to that one. Just like Thingy isn't really a rehash of The Call of Ktulu, 'cause Ktulu was an instrumental.
In case of master of puppets lyrics, imo, why would metallica do a song offensive to alcohol because they themselves used it anyway, Cocaine would seem to suit the words better imo, because it has about the same affect , dont know about it much better maybe I should ask James someday =D
That could be cocaine... It wouldn't make since that it was alcohol considering they would have made an eight minute song about something they did consistently and how it's bad.
James said in a 1986 interview that the song was about drug addiction; he'd been to a party where there were people shooting up Heroin, and was really creeped out by people's lives being totally controlled by drugs.
Think about it: NEEDLE work the way, Never you betray, Life of Death becoming Clearer.
Pain monopoly, Ritual Misery, CHOP YOUR BREAKFAST ON A MIRROR.
Shooting up, then first thing you do is use, then the way any hard drug tears your body up.
Actually it's about soldiers in The Great War. And of course the officers: "back to the front" and "you will die when I say you must die". Machine guns and barbed wire are also featured I believe.
yea about football players being traded and retireing and getting their bodies thrash around and thiungs like that....thtas just where he got the title from...cuz the newcaster called the football players "Disposible Heroes"
@mujuma now where in the bloody hell did you get that?
With "Disposable Heroes", Metallica continued their tradition of having a war-themed song on every album. Previously such songs were "No Remorse" on Kill 'Em All and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" on Ride the Lightning. This "tradition" would carry itself over in the band's next album, ...And Justice for All as well, with the song "One".
@N75911 I'm not sure what your refering to, as my comment was posted 2 years ago. I no longer listen to Metallica, and prefer the styles of Death Metal and Funeral Doom.
no good idea, but well it is your choice and your opinion...i listen to the doors (my alltime favourite band) almost 15 years but i really like Metallica (the old ones), too :)
Now he (James) was a champion of riffs and rhythms back then. So damn unique and so solid and tight and flawless. I have immense respect for what Hetfield did as a fucking teenager and not far after! MOP could be one of the best albums I've ever owned out of the 1600 of 'em. I swear, after getting Kirk's leads down to a tee, getting to sound as tight as James on rhythms was more of a challenge anyday back then and even still. To stay that solid, you gotta keep practicing.
Looks like Hollowvale has a bit of an ego. No one gives a shit about how your band covers Metallica. Write your own shit and play it from the fucking heart. Enjoy it for you and don't ever feel the need to let others on YouTube know how you think your band covers songs that have been done millions of times by anyone and everyone. Shit, I learned these songs when I was 13 Yrs old in the 8th fucking grade. The most challenging part is too be as mechanically rhythmic as Hetfield during this time...
Would ya look at that! Damage Ic's lead inocorprated into this song! That worked alright but they had to change keys or something to get back to the Dispoable Heroes part of the song/riff. Very interesting. I had no idea that was part of the idea here. Good stuff!
I always though that the damage inc solo sounded like it should be on Disposable heroes. Now I find out it was on DH. My favourite solo ever, except Megadeth's holy wars solo by Dave Mustaine.
The original title for this album was disposable heroes and when they changed it to Master of Puppets, they just left the album artwork. So yes, the album artwork is based off of this song.
Yup, it was one of the reasons he went to rehab. He said in an interview, he went to rehab for alcohol and "other addictions" one of which turned out to be chocolate! :D
Someone mentioned how Master of Puppets was about control, I was simply replying to that. I'm not saying Disposable Heroes is about drugs. Do you think I'm fucking stupid? I didn't start the whole Master of Puppets discussion...
"how come? master of puppets is about being controlled of something and you can clearly see the strings and hands in the top of the album."
i remember reading an interview with lars somewhere where he mentioned this guy who was hanging out with them at the time and apparently he only needed a sniff of cocaine to get him going in the morning :P ergo "chop your breakfast on a mirror"
That's because it's what would become "Damage, Inc." On Puppets they had many chunks of songs melded together before they rearranged the songs into what we now know as "Master of Puppets."

I think it's hilarious when you compare state of the art thrash metal like this with the romper room garbage of today. I don't understand how we went so far downward in terms of quality.
this song was the first song wrote on the master of puppets album coz if u go and look for a live video of this song u can find one for james sayin this next song is goin to be on the next album, its brill they didnt write differnt lyrisc for this song coz i think they rule
really because when album comes out its all done for people who think metallica sold out or suck. sure their not same as they were but they still kick ass
Brilliant! How sad to see what happened to Metallica over the years. Remember when I 1st bought Puppets in the 80s and 1st heard this song. Easily the best song on the album and one of my all time favourites by them. Metallica - RIP (unless they change things radically with their new album!)
its cool hearing them practice and seeing how much the song evolves by the studio version

Battery and Damage Inc, Beating people up for fun,
Master: Drugs, both Coke and Heroin controlling your life.
Thingy: People controlled by something they don't understand and cannot see.
Sanitarium: Mentally Ill people who can't think for themselves being locked away
Disposable: Sargeants barking orders, basically owning your ass.
Leper: Oily Preachers Bilking Money from innocents.

I think it's hilarious when you compare state of the art thrash metal like this with the romper room garbage of today. I don't understand how we went so far downward in terms of quality.

mrpuppets 5 years ago
Aye, I think it was the first one they did live anyway. September 1985 in Germany.
awebst11 4 years ago

megaslaytallithrax87 5 years ago
Their next album will be heavily influenced by james`s "New" Melodic vocals... it will take center stage. For btter or worse, deal with it

the best metallica album, if kill em all isnt. the newer metallica sucks tho. think ill stick to black sabbath
sumdumstoner 5 years ago

Brilliant! How sad to see what happened to Metallica over the years. Remember when I 1st bought Puppets in the 80s and 1st heard this song. Easily the best song on the album and one of my all time favourites by them. Metallica - RIP (unless they change things radically with their new album!)

I thought I was the only one who thought that this was the best song on the album.

Yeah man this song rules, it's always the first thing I play when I pick up the guitar, I love the main riff, it's brutal!
davemcgill18 4 years ago

onethousandtrolls 5 years ago

davemcgill18 5 years ago
I read somewhere that the original plan was to have that solo in Disposable Heroes but then they moved it to Damage Inc.
aboobaa 4 years ago
yeah they were going to do a second solo in this song after james says i was born for dying bvut they moved it to damage inc at the last second
