Without Trey , Phish would not have been nearly as magic and spectacular, but they work so well together as a quartet , especially during improv., that each member has been crucial to their incredible development..
its not that i don't hear how great mike is. in fact, mike leads a few parts of the jam. but trey's sound here. its so unique...i dunno...i'm hammered, but i feel like if the whole band is firing, trey is gonna shine...electric guitar man, its just hard to beat.....the trained phish ear hears it all though
thank you for giving this a listen! they're not fucking around here. while we're at it, check the velvet sea from N.C. 03. enjoy. have to love you tube
this whole tour in 94 has most of my favorite phish jams of all time although i am 1 of the few that prefers the way they jam after the first hiatus was over. Dont hate on me, i know they arent as consistent w/ the awesomeness this since this period of time but when they are on, they are fucking ON more than EVER lol. (the yamar jam from IT for example, they never wouldve done something like that in 94, so funky yet dark but didnt sound like they were just tryin to figure out where to go next)
Have you even listened to 95 or 97 man (or 98 even for that matter). The jams from the pre-hiatus destroy anything that came from 2003-04. Sure they have their rediculous jams (ie. the Pipers from 12/29/03 and 06/19/2004) but compare that to anything from summer or fall 97 or winter 95 or summer 98 and you will see utter domination
dude. no offense but ive been to over 250 shows since 1992. Believe me i know. I never said Phish wasnt tighter pre-hiatus. I just said that when they are on, i like it more than i ever have anything they've done musically. But whatever, its not like they are a real jazz band or anything. Trey couldnt play half the shit i have to in nyc jazz clubs just like i cant pull off what he does with a simple mixolidian scale. Trey is an alien. But I like Fishman the best, most versitile of the 4
@ModalGroove where do you rank trey in terms of rock guitarists? not saying you are, but trey always seems to be hated on by the jazz guitar community due to him playing easy scales. thoughts?
I think it's funny that you know what trey could and couldnt play. I'm sure you're a good player if you play jazz, but trey played some solid jazz standards when he was younger.
But im also a strange individual with my taste. Im mostly a jazz and oldschool headhunters style funk guy at heart. But i grew up on Metal. Phish and Sabbath with Dio are my favorite rock bands of all time. LOL so in the end i just guess im wierd LOL this is probably why a believe john coltrane is the greatest musician that ever lived and created modern rock music with his musicial theories and techniques
I think he got too comfortable...or just plain lazy. His playing was so much more adventurous in the early days. I mean come on...Has Trey's playing really evolved all that much since '96-'97?
From what I've heard of the recent tour he seems to be playing the same stuff every night guitar-wise. using that damn whammy pedal on every friggin' solo!
I completely agree. His playing right now is getting better - that damn whammy pedal still thrives. But it's got to be drugs or something, because it would be hard to lose such creativity over just a couple of years.
Who am I to judge though, theyre still the best. Cant wait for Merriweather
oh man, sometimes i forget how sick some of the shit from 94 is. i dont think ive ever heard a reba jam quite like this.thanks for all the great vids man.

@thetruthmustbeknown yah pretty easy scales. In the reba jam he plays around one particular scale- F mixolydian, or the B flat major scale.

Trey plays so cleanly. I wonder if he was developing some sort of carpal tunnel syndrome in the post-hiatus period? Comparisons are stark.
-It happens to classical musicians often. It is a real occupational hazard.
