Actually Edison wasn't really that violent - he dropped to killing animals with alternating current to make his point of it being more dangerous than his less efficient direct current. Otherwise he was a pragmatic pacifist, who opposed animal cruelty (but not meat eating) and pointed out, that as long as people will continue harming other creatures they will remain savages.
