  • The doctor seen at the very start was none other than series announcer Ernie Anderson.

  • "tell 'em I died."

  • Poor Ed. The only person in the universe who admires him is Mickey Hart.

And Eunice and Mama have to spoil that.

  • I like how Tommy flubbed his line at the beginning! Very cute.

  • Most people are blessed w/ not knowing everything that can happen during and after operative procedures.

I used to be an OR Technician. When they say 'minor' surgery, they mean a routine procedure accompanied by local anesthetic. In most cases, patients survive minor surgery w/out complications.

The complications in surgery usually arise from how the patient responds to the anesthetic. Local anesthesia is less risky to use than general anesthesia.

  • which is why if you're going into major surgery, you might as well make your arrangements and have your will and things in order before you hit the O.R. How many times have we heard of people who never make it off the table cuz of heart PVC's caused by the anesthetic or something totally unpredictable?

Back to this hilarious sketch though, they really do a good job of freaking him out...if it was my relatives, I'd have kicked 'em out!!

  • How many brothers did Eunice have?

In 'Mama's Family' they only mention one: Vinton. What happened to Larry, Jack and Philip?

  • Tell them that I died! LOL

  • THE GENIUSES OF COMEDY....TRULY.... Wish we had this in OUR lifetime!!!!

  • The doctor was played by Ernie Anderson, the Voice of ABC! :D

  • In "The Family" there were FOUR brothers: Roddy McDowell (Philip), Alan Alda (Larry), Tommy Smothers (Jack) and Ken Berry (Vint). Vint was the only one who seemed like a real "Harper", that is, a loser. All the others seemed very un-Harper like, although Tommy Smothers does seem more like a Harper than Alda and McDowell. McDowell as a Harper was crazy; he had a BRITISH accent, for God's sake!

  • Well, they were guests on the show...I always wondered if they even watched the show and knew how the "family" was. One thing though, as phenomenal an actor as Roddy was, I always thought he should have faked a country accent, or least a slight one.

  • I just remembered; Ken Berry played "Philip" in the "Eunice" special.

  • actually

the characters changed when the spin off was in motion!

in THE FAMILY sketchs on the CBS

it was thelma, and carl and they had ellen, eunice, phillip, larry, and jake!

    then in MAMA'S FAMILY

it was thelma, and carl, and they had ellen, eunice, and vint!

  • Well the focus was Eunice and how dysfunctional she was. Mama apparently did quite will with all her other children. But then Mama was was just a mean old lady in the sketches.

  • I don't think she did. Ellen turned out conceited, selfish, spoiled and nasty. Vinton, from the "Mama's Family" tv show, is such a loser that he and and his wife live in Mama's basement. Some of the sketches featured sons of Thelma who appeared to be flukes, the only successful, stable person in the family. But it was always evident that Thelma Harper was a terrible, abusive mother.

  • I thought Larry seemed like a Harper, he drunk beer and he went off on Eunice at the end, he was the ONLY brother to stand up to Eunice.

  • @cynthiacher - That wasn't all; McDowall was five years older than Burnett, unlike his Phillip character being Eunice's little brother. But that he spoke with his own British accent may have been a little cast in-joke - not unlike the matter of Vicki Lawrence, the youngest cast member, playing the mother of the 16-years-older Burnett. (Never mind what was noted about Carol identifying more with - and assigning for herself the role of - Eunice.)

  • @cynthiacher You are of course, correct, but when "Mama's Family" became a series, they had to rewrite the characters. Mama was a bitter old lady and you can't really create a show around that. They had to soften Mama a bit and make her more likable.

  • Tommy is stuttering a bit more than usual. Is that just acting or had he been smoking a little wacky weed?

  • He's just forgetting his lines is all. I felt he acted a little poor in this, but overall, he pretty much got away with it.

  • I think he was just trying to act very nervous and uncomfortable; given the situation, who wouldn't be like that? He's having surgery soon, and his awful family is telling him he might be die from it! And Eunice says his wife is cheating on him! No wonder he's stuttering. He stuttering from fear.

  • Rest in Peace Harvey.

    Rest in Peace.

  • We will Miss you Harvey!

  • Jake reminds me a LOT more of Vint!

  • Vint's charactor was based on Jack.

  • I believe that too, although most people say he was based on Phil.

  • Yes, they think that because Ken Berry played Phil in the Eunice Special because Rody McDowell wasn't able to. But there are websites devoted to Mama's Family that confirm that they based Vint on Jack and were going to bring in Phil later, but never did.

Mama said a few times during the series that she had four kids.

  • Could you tell me where those web sites are, I'd like to see that.

  • I didn't save them, I found them in a Google Search for "Mama's Family". There is more than one and they are mostly by fans of the show.

  • Ya gotta love when "Jack's" wig comes off, and at how crummy an actor Tommy Smothers was in this...he couldn't remember hardly a line...lol. This skit is so funny, though.

  • See, I just thought he was playing it dumb like he did with his brother Dick in those Smothers Brothers acts.

  • Are you kidding, Tommy Smothers was great in this. What you see is the character Tom plays. He's sweet and endearing and a very funny actor. I really like the actor who plays the doctor though. His name is Ernie Anderson and he had a very distinctive voice. He was an actor from Cleveland and his voice was used in alot of commercials in the nineties. Go Tommy :-) R.I.P Ernie :-(

  • @pocodfe The man's a GENIUS. He's playing it this way on purpose. That was the basis of his huge comedic talent. The man is awesome!

  • @pocodfe he's so bad, he's good!!!!
