Why is it everytime I want to see a clean level hit from Phaneuf, the clip is either of him raising his elbow or leaving the ice as if he was measuring how many inches he can jump vertically? too many of his hits are conducted like 20 inches above ice level
you see his elbow up after he hits alot because in that position , after hitting at such an angle so that the the person who gets hit gets proper leverage , and goes flying , the momentum that he's going at would inevitebly raise his elbow .
all of this vertical jump & elbowing business is just a good way to get the guy up in the air & take him out of the play .

As for the Oilers, I started following them in 1996 when Weight, CuJo, Marchant and Smyth were up-and-coming big-time players, and they were being called the Cardiac Kids by an announcer on HNIC (probably Steve Armitage). But I remember watching the entire 7 game series in the 96-97 playoffs when they were playing against the #2 seed Dallas Stars, Cujo was on fire the entire series, and they somehow upset the Stars in 7 in Dallas. Still probably the most exciting playoff series I've ever seen.
Finally, no, I do not give McGuire any credit whatsoever. I give the Preds credit for giving them a tough 1st round matchup. And the series only went to 6 games, not 7.

i think he plays in the gray area a lot. His hits seem dirty but are clean. They are right on the edge, he hits many times after the puck is gone but not too much later. He also takes some steps but very few. Seems like he rides the line between penalty and clean hit.
Have you seen his hits on Getzlaf? or Moen? His hit on Burrows was terrible, they were both skating towards the puck and he just levels him when neither were near the puck. It seems like Phaneuf hits hard but at the same time they come a little late many times and he gets his elbows up a little.

This is also why he was voted hardest hitter.

Finally, no, I do not give McGuire any credit whatsoever. I give the Preds credit for giving them a tough 1st round matchup. And the series only went to 6 games, not 7.

I am no fan of Pierre McGuire, but to say the man has no cred is simply ignorant. The man is around top hockey players all the time. And he made a prediction based on what he saw. I would go so far as to say he wasn't wrong in that the Preds COULD have won that series.
Again, I don't like the guy AT ALL! But let's not get too ridiculous.

I didn't say that he had zero credibility. I was responding to Numbnuts (AKA khews11) saying that I needed to give McGuire credit for saying the Wings would be bounced by the Preds in the 2008 playoffs. I don't give McGuire credit in that instance. He often makes other salient points, but he made this decision after game 4 when Hasek imploded (IMO Osgood should've been the starter from day one).
But then again I'm looking through my Red-tinted glasses, so my opinion is a bit more subjective.

Just wait till Phaneuf hits his prime. He's still young and makes some mistakes, but in a couple of years, he'll be the most elite defenseman. Every team would love to have him but luckily he's locked up to a long term contract.

i think he plays in the gray area a lot. His hits seem dirty but are clean. They are right on the edge, he hits many times after the puck is gone but not too much later. He also takes some steps but very few. Seems like he rides the line between penalty and clean hit.

Have you seen his hits on Getzlaf? or Moen? His hit on Burrows was terrible, they were both skating towards the puck and he just levels him when neither were near the puck. It seems like Phaneuf hits hard but at the same time they come a little late many times and he gets his elbows up a little.

His feet left after contact was made which is fine. The feet have to be on the ice when you make contact, but if you explode up into the air AFTER the hit, its clean.
