Sure, if you listen to the Live at Royal Albert Hall recordings his growls there are a bit poor compared to himself in earlier times. The growls/screams from his younger days, though, are solid gold.

On another note, comparing Mike to James Labrie:

Labrie has that vocal range where he can hit the high notes, but I truly can't stand how he sounds.

Mike's voice has a nice quality to it, but not as much high-note range.

Overall, Mike wins

Death Growls are actually incredibly difficult to produce properly, and Akerfeldt is one of the few out there who's able to make it sound solid and powerful... and if you actually had the attention span to listen to one full album of theirs you'd know that 35% of the time he sings (and damn well at that) just like anyone else with "Vocal Ability."

Even if you really are permanently stuck in the stone ages of Heavy Metal, all you would have to do is pop in the record "Damnation" and you would be forced to retract all of your statements about him being a bad vocalist because "all he can do is Growl", while he has multiple albums out now that are all singing.
