It's a moot point anyway, since Sylvian and Co. nicked this look from the original early 70's Glam rockers - Bowie, Bolan, New York Dolls and Roxy Music. Japan would later change their image again, only to have it stolen by Duran Duran and the New Romantics.

Certainly Japan's first 2 lp's were their best-by far. They really changed direction wit the 3rd lp Quiet Life. They rocked with the first 2 then really went mellow with Quiet Life and all of their following stuff.

The others in the band didn't think Bob Dean was 'pretty enough', so tended to have him obscured. The rest of the band all knew each other from school in south london, and he joined them from the depths of hackney! (north east london). He was famously once reported in NME as 'Rob Dead' having broken his leg in a car accident - in fact he was generally clumsy and had slipped over on some ice in a side road in clapton - not so 'cool' as a car accident though!
