My aunt is a broadway hound and was really mad Madonna got the part of Evita. When she saw the movie, she said she has never been more wrong. She became a Madonna fan after that. She thought her voice was lovely in the movie with surprising strength and character.

As argentinian, I'm proud of her and of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández: they're the successors of Perón and Evita. They do, with mistakes obviously, cause we're all human, the same things that them: Human Rights, economic and cultural soverignity, libertarism and fight to media, food and religious big corporations.

Lawd! You are so pretentious. Yet you don't know what you talk about. Lupone even then was already too old for the role.. and, while *ok* (she's OVERRATED) onstage, she'd CHEW the scenery in a movie and would've looked & sound rediculous.. A strong voice would actually defeat the purpose of an Evita wracked with insecurity & vulnerability even as she was powerful (actually, a mesmerizing combination for the masses).. and Madonna's delivery PERFECTLY captures those qualities.

OK, in all fairness, I've never liked Madonna. She is OK as a singer. Her career has always been about sex and gimmicks. When this movie came out it was all :THE ROLE SHE WAS BORN TO PLAY.....bullshit. As an actress she is as mediocre as she is a singer. The joke? All the hype about her playing Eva, Andrew L-W had to rewrite the score, especially this song, because she couldn't sing it as written. I do not think it's here voice.-. It's her interpretation of the role of that particular song. She trys to single it from a simple girl to become a strong woman-you can hear that her tone changes voer the song.
