A very well made and edited recruiting video. Nice music choice. Would have liked to have seen more Alumni combat photos to really hit home the "fruits of your labor" portion of the video. Well done.
its not required by any means. West Point is a federal service academy--going there commits you to a total of 9 yrs of service. VMI is not a service academy; it is a college that runs on a military system. There is no service obligation
In response to armstronggw5; If you are looking for a good school, decide what you want to study and which school best serves your purpose. Schools like VMI, Citadel and the Academies will all challenge you physically, mentally and intellectually. VMI & Citadel may not be your best choice if you want to be a marine engineer. The Coast Guard Academy my not make you the best Air Force Officer, etc. Visit each school you are interested in and talk with some of the students and faculty.
I like how no one responded to armstrong down there. The Citadel is harder. If you wanna quit being a "4th class cadet" halfway through the year, then sure, go to VMI. Basically, if you wanna be a bitch and you can't handle a whole school year of hell, I'm sure VMI would love to have you. That's how they breed em up there in Virginia.
wow you are so gay..i go to vmi and off top i just know you're one of those kids who pushes rats daily....i mean seriously your username is vmiclassof2012. i bet you made that the day you broke out huh?
Nice recruiting commercial. You have to be a strong willed individual to be in the military and I praise all those who are, great job VMI in the inagural parade, you made America proud!
Sitting in a classroom is just about the easiest thing out there. Think before you speak. Which sounds easier? running miles upon miles, jumping over logs, waking up at 4Am every day, doing push ups/pull ups/sittups/ etc. or just sitting in a classroom learning economics...
im interested in going to VMI, but i don't know if my grades are good enough. some guys on the internet were saying citadel was harder, but i'm not sure. what are the differences between the 2?
I was at VMI's matriculation today. I'm always so impressed by the young men and women you attend VMI. It's really amazing how the Institute has molded them into people of such character. VMI is a far cry from the University I attended back in the early 80's.
K so i'm really wanting to go to VMI for college but my language courses don't match up for the requirements. I think im gonna have to settle for Citadel if i get accepted. You guys are lucky. No matter what i'll take pride in wherever i go.
Free0352, Some of these cadets (and it's scary to think these same ones will be commissioned officers) should listen to you. I agree with everything you said 100%, and then some. Your powerful comments bring truth from a different perspective, especially since you are an NCO with combat experience. Now take care of the newly minted LT you will mentor before he gets someone killed. Take care.
Trashsing or one-upping each other's military experience is as old as warfare itself, but it is useless and in my opinion shows lack of maturity among soldiers. I have experienced a lot of it and dished it out (class of 90). Everyone's experience is different. All are difficult in their own ways. But men are men - they are individuals and should be judged a such. Take men one at a time.
Arguing over the internet is like competing in the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded. How about y'all stop making the greatest military on earth sound like a bunch of six-year-old girls, and get back to your game of world of warcraft.
Thats 19 months, in Iraq. I have 10 years in the Marine Corps. I'm sure Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom are thougher than you VMI experience. My point is that silly school rivalry beyond football is pointless and counter productive and petty, not qualities we NCOs are looking for in our officers.
I was with 1/2 during task force Tarawa's battle at An'Nas in 03 and was in Hit Iraq as well. Have a total of 19 months, all of it in the Infantry as an 03. I'd say that settles it mr class of 06. You should listen to your Platoon Sergeant there young LT, you don't know anything yet.
Free0352 I'm currently serving in Iraq. I think if you were really as tough as you act like, you wouldn't have enough time to constantly be on the internet. Get a life man. Besides, its clear that you're just jealous you didn't go to a school like VMI. Don't put down people who did. - VMI '06
And as for privates folding up under pressue I've sure seen that too. And if I heard two privates talking trash about whose basic experience was more difficult I'd tell them the same thing I'd tell to cadets who'd never heard a shot fired in anger. One of the best LTs I ever had went to VMI, but I don't think thats what made him a good Marine Officer. I think he'd have been just as good had he been ROTC or went to the Naval Academy or some other school. Don't take this school stuff so serious
Like I said, go to Iraq and prove yourself and then come talk to me. One day of combat is five thousand times harder than 500 days of the rat line. Ask anyone whose been to combat. VMI and Citadel guys talking trash sounds like Army guys and Marines talking trash. Two players on the same team being immature. If you go to a military academy whoopty f'n doo. Its how you perform in combat that matters, not what school you attended.
i just have one thing to say... i am a keydet at vmi and your partly right, but the school it's self sets you up to be successful in your military career. it's a learning experience, one that teaches you about team work and how to be a real leader.. the school may not be real combat but over 50% of the cadets that graduate go on to see real combat as officers trained to lead their men the VMI way. VMI is the only school in the nation able to fix bayonets because they went to battle as a unit..
Dear free0352, you don't have tell us that you don't have a diploma...it shows. These guys you enjoy belittling are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan with far long and far better service than you and your lousy attitude will ever know.
I got my Offer of Appointment in the mail today! Conditional Appointment to enter the Virginia Military Institute with the Class of 2012. Woot! Look forward to meeting you vmiusairforce and psmriley in the ratline!
I've read breaking out too and it's pretty cool because most of the people mentioned in the book are still here.I'm part of the Class of 2011. See you all on the stoop.
I bet you fall out of every rifle run, spend 30 seconds of effort at each sweatparty providing you dont ride the GIM, and OGA everyone who hurts your feelings which will happen often especialy once your co matriculates figure out that you are worthless and either shun you or tell you every day to kill yourself in which case you will fuck them over by reporting entire companies to settle some stupid problem you brought upon yourself. I advise you to reconsider your choice of schools.
i wasn't arguing with you. i take the ratline seriously. i'm not belittling it. one of your BRs privately told me to maintain a lower profile. he's right. i'm going to shut up now. feel free to give me an internet sweatparty. i'm not going to give you any lip about it. what won't kill me will make me stronger. take care.
how can you say you take the ratline seriously when you're not a rat. you a stupid highschooler, probably homeschooled too. You should have listened to that Cadet and kept a low profile, cause you've already failed at that.
ihopeyounevercomeher, shut the fuck up. you're the guy who thinks that he's super hooah because he skated through the ratline without being seen and now you think that you're the shit for it. you're also the guy that thinks that now that he's out of the ratline you now have first class privs and that makes untouchable.
you're ALSO the one who stops a rat/4th on the stoop because his gym dyke shirt wasn't tucked in all the way, and when he gave you that look to piss off, you send him to the GC for disrespect. that leaves no choice for them (guy OR girl) to OGA you just for being a faggot tool bag. grow up, vmi is college.
This is a great commercial. I am among the Conditionally Appointed class for next fall. For all who have been accepted, do not call yourselves class of 2012, you have to earn that title. And again this commercial is great I love the music and video. Picked just right. I hope I can join the many who have become VMI Cadets.
Now that's the best comment I've read. I usually see Citadel and VMI guys get in a worthless pissing contest. But you, sir, are an officer and a gentleman.
I think it's laughable when the video mentions "where men and women train". I went there when it was just men as the founders meant it to be. Happy Founder's Day VMI!
So in your opinion women shouldn't be in the military at all? Otherwise you leave future VMI leaders unprepared for today's military. How can you be a leader to women, let alone be led by women if you've never had to do that before?
That's not what I'm saying. The cadets that graduated from VMI when it was all male did well in the military for nearly 160 years. If you you are not pig-headed, understand the chain of command and respect the rank, it don't matter if you're male or female. All leaders have to earn that respect though and I've served under and with some great female officers who did wonderful at other schools.
VMI has an interesting history in deed particularly with diversity. How is it today in 2007? That is a question that must be answered by honest participants of the VMI. Can't necessary blame the institution for every account of racism or discriminatory situations that occurs because it begins in the hearts and minds of indviduals (people). I see VMI recruiting outstanding minorities to participate in collegiate sports such as football, basketball, etc.
I am attending VMI starting next year. While I agree that VMI should have been able to keep an all-male corps at their own choosing, I think that as a VMI graduate you should support VMI in ALL of its endeavors rather than touting how tough you are because there were no women. No disrespect in any way, but if I remember correctly the women also have to meet the same standards as the male cadets of years past.
As a female that has applied for a place in the VMI Class of 2012, I obviously agree with psmriley and disagree with mulder1996. Wake up! It's 2008, not 1839! VMI had to change with the times, and to its credit, though it was painful, it succeeded! For a good book on this change, read "Breaking Out: VMI and the Coming of Women." See you guys in the ratline!
Yea, I'll see you in the ratline. Don't talk about VMI until you've experienced it for yourself. YOu don't know what it's like here or wheather it was actually a good decision for VMI to go co-ed. We will be waiting.
hey retard...for u rednecks don't know DSL stands for "Diesel" and this commercial really sux...which retard decided to put the barbarian song in here...this makes VMI look weak!!! Fix it!!!!
Kerrebrock, you're a pussy. I remember when you passed out during the house mountain hike rat year. What was your excuse? "There's no hills at Paris Island." Way to pose, tool.
So, thank you, Brian, for the video reminder of the good things from VMI. Aqeutius, I'm sorry that a rat's mistake is the only quality you can share about an upstanding cadet, citizen and veteran.
I'm not going to say "Fuck the Citadel" it's immature and frankly our schools are more similar to one another than some may like to think. That is probable why the rivalry is so high. Nevertheless, there is no reason to discredit the Institute like that. Kudos to 2LT Kerrebrock for a kick ass film. Hoorah.
@upshawca Regardless of which came first, I find it hard to believe that VMI is more challenging than the Citadel. Freshman year is MUCH worse than hell. You have to experience it to even have the slightest understanding...
@rollthehard6 What does one man's opinion have to do with the challenge of the school? By the way, I have heard that quote used with every school under the sun. When your stuck in an argument, don't pull irrelevant quotes out of your ass.
only because more people started applying to The Citadel rather than VMI, resulting in our campus moving to a bigger location. 'E' for effort on that one though.
More because it was easier to get in? How about a little more "attractive" location? Maybe the Lords of Discipline was a great marketing piece? All I know is half of my original barracks site is THE original site with cannonballs still sticking out of the walls!
No need for an "E" for effort. I think it's pretty to safe to say we would argue all day about which institution is the best. When I visited Charleston and saw the pink castle in the middle of Charleston, I had to laugh, especially in the middle of the Supreme Court ruling allowing women to attend our schools. One positive point - the Citadel cadets at Army Advanced Camp were very cool and team players. I remember that specifically, and it has been nearly 12 years since I went through.
VMI ... losing to The Citadel since 1842.

I think learning economics would be much more "challenging" than learning how to jump over a log, as this video suggests
gooner13for4 3 years ago
Sitting in a classroom is just about the easiest thing out there. Think before you speak. Which sounds easier? running miles upon miles, jumping over logs, waking up at 4Am every day, doing push ups/pull ups/sittups/ etc. or just sitting in a classroom learning economics...

Can't necessary blame the institution for every account of racism or discriminatory situations that occurs because it begins in the hearts and minds of indviduals (people). I see VMI recruiting outstanding minorities to participate in collegiate sports such as football, basketball, etc.

you do not have to go to the military if you go to vmi

I am attending VMI starting next year. While I agree that VMI should have been able to keep an all-male corps at their own choosing, I think that as a VMI graduate you should support VMI in ALL of its endeavors rather than touting how tough you are because there were no women. No disrespect in any way, but if I remember correctly the women also have to meet the same standards as the male cadets of years past.
psmriley 4 years ago
As a female that has applied for a place in the VMI Class of 2012, I obviously agree with psmriley and disagree with mulder1996. Wake up! It's 2008, not 1839! VMI had to change with the times, and to its credit, though it was painful, it succeeded! For a good book on this change, read "Breaking Out: VMI and the Coming of Women." See you guys in the ratline!
DSL1990NROTC 4 years ago
Yea, I'll see you in the ratline. Don't talk about VMI until you've experienced it for yourself. YOu don't know what it's like here or wheather it was actually a good decision for VMI to go co-ed. We will be waiting.

Kerrebrock, you're a pussy. I remember when you passed out during the house mountain hike rat year. What was your excuse? "There's no hills at Paris Island." Way to pose, tool.

I sometimes dread to think which of my mistakes and weaknesses (there are plenty, big and small) BRs may recall, but then I remember three things:
1) if you knew how OFTEN others think of you, you really wouldn't care WHAT they think of you,
2) I have the rest of my life to balance my past mistakes with my future accomplishments, and
3) I would not be who I am today without every experience along the way.
BeritO 3 years ago 3
So, thank you, Brian, for the video reminder of the good things from VMI. Aqeutius, I'm sorry that a rat's mistake is the only quality you can share about an upstanding cadet, citizen and veteran.

I'm not going to say "Fuck the Citadel" it's immature and frankly our schools are more similar to one another than some may like to think. That is probable why the rivalry is so high. Nevertheless, there is no reason to discredit the Institute like that. Kudos to 2LT Kerrebrock for a kick ass film. Hoorah.

Anyone who definately wants a real military experience apply to The Citadel. Not this want-to-be Citadel.
raw7adub 4 years ago
If by "real military experience" you mean getting rejected from VMI and going to the Citadel as an alternative then I guess you're right..
upshawca 4 years ago 7
No I just didnt want to waste my time with applying to lower standards. That's all buddy relax.
raw7adub 4 years ago
@upshawca I think the Citadel came after VMI so who is the want to be?
Nick40ghs 1 year ago
@upshawca Regardless of which came first, I find it hard to believe that VMI is more challenging than the Citadel. Freshman year is MUCH worse than hell. You have to experience it to even have the slightest understanding...

@rollthehard6 What does one man's opinion have to do with the challenge of the school? By the way, I have heard that quote used with every school under the sun. When your stuck in an argument, don't pull irrelevant quotes out of your ass.

most of the guys in my high school who couldn't get into VMI went to the Citadel. Lower entrances standards, according to Princeton Review.

The original Citadel is now an Embassy Suites in downtown Charleston. I think the reputation of VMI is pretty safe. Give me a break KNOB!
mulder1996 4 years ago
only because more people started applying to The Citadel rather than VMI, resulting in our campus moving to a bigger location. 'E' for effort on that one though.
raw7adub 4 years ago
More because it was easier to get in? How about a little more "attractive" location? Maybe the Lords of Discipline was a great marketing piece? All I know is half of my original barracks site is THE original site with cannonballs still sticking out of the walls!
mulder1996 4 years ago
No need for an "E" for effort. I think it's pretty to safe to say we would argue all day about which institution is the best. When I visited Charleston and saw the pink castle in the middle of Charleston, I had to laugh, especially in the middle of the Supreme Court ruling allowing women to attend our schools. One positive point - the Citadel cadets at Army Advanced Camp were very cool and team players. I remember that specifically, and it has been nearly 12 years since I went through.

@raw7adub Funny... cause VMI was founded first.
