They left out Sugarland Express,Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom(they gave us the year,no actual footage),Always,Hook,The Lost World, and The Terminal.Understandable, for ther most part,as they are either films Spielberg wasn't happy with or they are as good as the films that were picked. However, leaving Sugarland out was stupid. It was highly acclaimed, and won a good number of awards.Saw it last weekend and really enjoyed it.Should have been in there.
@NeoConnor1 They shouldn't have left out The Terminal either. I don't care what anyone says. I love that movie and think it's probably his most underrated movie.
Pretentious film snobs always give awards and accolades to undeserving filmmakers. You know how long it took for Alfred Hitchcock to get his lifetime achievement awards? You know that he never won the best director Oscar right? So, I think its funny how much hate is given to the true master today (James Cameron) and how much love is going to the Frank Capras of today (Spielberg, Scorsese, etc).
I just think its hypocritical to attack Cameron for anything after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
@LukeLovesRose please dont fucking put cameron and master int he same sentence, he is a guy who make shit look good with computer graphics. he is not a master, you see scorsese for example uses special effects to tell a story in the aviator for example, the special effects are not the fucking movie itself. i am sorry i dont want to bash cameron but he makes blockbusters but not like a genius. ET is a genius blockbusters, shot for 9 mill dollars, its just a peice of movie magic
@LukeLovesRose and hitchcock and cameron are like comparing scorsese to michael bay. Sorry i have lost MUCHO respect for cameron after he did the cornball avatar and titanic, and to be honest if he found someone else to write the script he might stand a chance, but his script writing is just pure SHIT, like worse than shit, it is so fucking cheesy that it makes me embarrased, like i blush thinking "really"? spielberg hitchcock, scorsese, well at least scorsese and hitchccok are on another level.
LOL. Ok. I may have been a little harsh when I attacked Spielberg.
Your attack on my opinion of Cameron almost makes you look insane, malows1234. It's my opinion. You have no right attack me or my opinion in such an immature way. Do you even know what makes great screenwriting versus bad screenwriting? I doubt it.
Why don't you watch Titanic and Avatar again when you grow up?!
And, I really wish I hadn't attacked Spielberg so harshly.
@LukeLovesRose yes i actaully do know what makes a good screenplay, well lets just say i know what makes a bad one. CHEESY AS FUCK scenes like "I'm Flying JACk, I'm flying" make people blush cause of the embarrasment, yup thats cheesy. i wont comment on cameron's directing, becausei dont think he is a terrible director, but if he writes another single script, like that cornball avatar and titanic, and in some cases T2, i wont watch his movie every agian.
LOL. Do you even know what "cheesy" means? Explain why you think "I'm flying, Jack" is so cheesy. Oh, wait. You can't, because you don't know anything about Cameron or his skills as a writer/ director. Like every other hater out there, you're just desperate for anything to trash the image of Cameron or his masterpieces.
Anyway, Spielberg has made some great movies, that is true. BUT, he is not on the same, game-changing level that Cameron's on.
@LukeLovesRose bro you wanna love cameron, FINE, you want to tell me i am wrong about cameron's skill fine. BUT dont ever say cameron is a bigger game changer than spielberg, cause your getting into facts here, not opinions. Is the james cameron the father of the modern blockbuster? NOPE. that title distinctively belongs to spielberg. Secondly you can argue there are better directors than spielberg, but no bigger game changers. what jaws did was welll..... just changed hollywood forever.
Seriously? How exactly did Jaws change Hollywood forever? All of the tactics in Jaws were used SOO much better in earlier Hitchcock films... like Psycho. So, please, enlighten me.
@LukeLovesRose well ok, 2 can play that game buddy. you think jaws wasn't original, thats actually not out of line. but here is the thing, cameron is way more unoriginal, your HONESTLY going to defend the guy who made avatar by saying that jaws was unoriginal? really? Cameron formula=2 leads have sex or love affiar right before catastrophe (titanic(car sex), avatar (kinky alien sex)). ok secondly avatar has such a stupid rehashed storyline, and everyone agrees with that that, its dances with wol
@LukeLovesRose fine, well dude i have no reason to defend spielberg, because i dont care for spielberg, the only reason this is a arguement, is because you make an almost borderline idiotic fantasy comment that james cameron is a bigger game changer than spielberg. sorry, spielberg=#1 game changer. goerge lucas=for techincal reasons. here is the thing james cameron would belong in lucas' group, because he only changed the game technologically. secondly if you want to argue this, use scorsese.
@LukeLovesRose ok finally if your going to make even a deep arguement about filmmakers, dont add cameron. cameron is a sellout, along with spielberg, along with lucas. noone makes a pg-13 with special effects ever 10 seconds, other than to make money. and jaws was original for one reason and one reason only. the camera is in the perspective of the shark, and the score is one of the best ever, briliantly edited by spielberg. neither cameron or spielberg stand in the leagues of scorsese, kubrick.
@LukeLovesRose yawn............ cause i am right....... dude there are artists and there are commercial directors, you gotta seperate them cause appealing to a massive audience means a director has made compromises to his vision. think about that ...... kubrick said that and it make crystal clear sense
LOL. Because a film is successful means a director is compromising his vision?? So, what was Romeo + Juliet, genius? I'm talking about the real play, written by Shakespeare back in the day?? Was he compromising something?? Or, was it pure gold that fell out of his quill??
Don't be an ass. Spielberg has had moments of greatness, there's no denying that. But, to say that Cameron has compromised anything in any of his masterpieces since The Terminator is RETARDED!
I'll give you more examples of popular art that you might deem, "A compromise." Um, well, let's start with the obvious. The Mona Lisa, the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's David, The Scream, etc, etc. Are they all shit??
Seriously, why don't you figure out what the term, "compromise" means and how it applies to great, popular art and unpopular art? Or, maybe, you should just fucking GROW UP!
@LukeLovesRose and since you make the special case of accusing spielberg for making kingdom of the crystal skulls, i will tell you what i am going to go ahead and bash cameron for all the stupid shit he is done. First, Titanic (learn how to write a screenplay), Avatar (learn how to write a screenplay, well actually you have the inability to learn cause u think you the king of the world, so just hire someone else to do it). stop making 3d movies with 1d characters). True lies is absolute shit
@LukeLovesRose man cameron, bay, emmerich, and just about any other blockbuster director is a derivitive of spielberg. agian you can call him a shit filmmaker, thats your opinion and i respect it. but not just cameron, but scorsese, coppola, or even hitchcock have changed the game like spielberg did. he is the most well known filmmaker in the world, by name. it was in time magazine, that not even as many people know a actor as they do his name. sorry bud, but game changer=spielberg
Um, Spielberg didn't invent cinema or popular cinema or as you say, "blockbusters." Spielberg was simply following the same patterns of other successful film with Jaws. Gone With The Wind, The Sound of Music, The Godfather ring any bells?? The way Spielberg fanatics like yourself talk, you'd think Spielberg invented the close-up or something. LOL.
I know why Cameron will be a game changer, whenever people wise up. Do you know specifically WHY Spielberg is?
I don't understand why you guys are fighting over Cameron and Spielberg? Can't we just enjoy them both? Both of those guys are game changers.Spielberg, along with George Lucas, basically started the whole summer blockbuster craze, allowing Cameron to make films like Aliens,T2,and True Lies.Cameron has even said he was inspired by those films.I think Spielberg and Cameron are both great,in different ways(Spielberg has better characters, although Cameron's are great),but they both artists of cinema.
If I wanted to put them in order, it would take me a while to figure out what movie I like better than the other. He is so talented. I love how he tells his stories and his visuals. I notice people never talk about his cinematography, or his choice of shots. A lot of directors nowadays choose some lousy shots but he's the top of the line when it comes to that. I also notice that nobody put The Color Purple in their top 5. I know there was a lot of drama with that, but he pulled that off well.
I love The Color Purple. It is not in my top 5(that would be Schindler's List,Saving Private Ryan,Minority Report,Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Jurassic Park),but Color Purple is at least in my Top 10.I have seen 23 of Spielberg's films(he s my favorite director),and the only two I really didn't like were 1941 and Temple of Doom.
@pljfilm that isnt any movie that speilberg did.... it's just saying what jobs he has done.... unless u mean the very first movie they showed which was jaws. (but it was at like 28 seconds...?)
I take you probably haven't seen 1941. Most people think that was his worst. I don't entirely disagree with that,as it does rate near the bottom to me. BTW,have you ever seen a Stanley Kubrick film? A.I. was intended as a tribute to him,and probably why most people think it's weird.Kubrick and Spielberg had very different styles.I loved A.I.,though.
Oh,really? Cool. I don't hate Kubrick,but I thought Spielberg did a great job on A.I. Still,Kubrick was a very visually-entralling director,and he would have done a fascinating take on A.I.
@NeoConnor1 the thing is though, kubrick never intended on directing AI. He was to produce it, and had originally conceived the idea, but wanted spielberg to do the picture. However, I was disappointed with the lack of credit that Spielberg gave to Kubrick. But overall its on okay film.
Yeah,I know that. But I don't see where Spielberg fails to give Kubrick enough credit.I mean,at the end of the credits,he did leave a dedication that said "For Stanley." Plus,Spielberg gave credit where it was due.I like the fact that all the sweet and sentimental moments actually came from Kubrick. It just doesn't sound like him.He was truly a genius.
@NeoConnor1 Well, its not that Spielberg fails. Its just that Kubrick had quite a bit more originally planned in the project, and no where through the credits besides, "for stanley" is he mentioned. He really did have quite a bit of information and prep done before he died. Im just saying. Both of them are genius,
I understand, and I am in no way criticizing Kubrick. But honestly,he gave it to Steven, which means it was his story to do what he wanted. However, the fact he took the project and left Stanley's stuff in there shows Steven certainly respected him.
@NeoConnor1 I understand too. But Kubrick died before handing it over. It wasnt until after his death that the Kubrick estate requested spielberg to do it and gave him full control. He did the best he could have done, its just sad knowing things probably would have turned out completely different. Although the fact is they are two completely different guys. It is what it is...rip stanley.
I thought he was trying to talk Steven into for years? I didn't know that.Interesting. I didn't know that. I still love A.I.,but I agree,it would have been very different if Kubrick had directed.
We'll all just ignore Transformers ... that can be on Michael Bay's Golden Globe tribute
