  • "many people were skeptical". I like how dumb sheep use carefull words for dumb people. He should have said: "A lot of DUMB people are skeptical and prove that they have no idea what they are talking about". face it, the majority of the world are extremely dumb and retarded people.

  • haha now thier full of commie bullshit

  • but i am sure that american news agencies did much better, at least they stay in HK, not like bbc ran away like escape from danger

  • omgosh, what's wrong here. i really do think that this is ultimately a positive review, at least it does not end with some doubts over hk's future...

  • Its nice 2 c HK is still on top and doing well.

Im a Brit and all haters jog on, look at HK its a wonderfull city the buldings all of it.

My british people was a part and helped HK and made it what it is today.

GOD SAVE OUR QUEEN & RULE BRITANNIA

  • We didn't have to give all of Hong Kong back

  • @kanenkitten yeah but that little island with the mountains on it isn't really much, beside imagin the difficulty of the people living there is across the strait where people do all their shopping is suddenly a diffrent political entity

  • @powereater: OK, I just think it's a shame it had to be given away. I wish they had adopted the proposal in 1898 that we'd have given Weihai back to the Qing Dynasty in exchange for total control over the new territories

  • @kanenkitten but the problem is the British never had total control of Weihai, it was on lease just like hong kong was...

  • When Brits were in HK, China showed a very benign image to the HKers in order to win their hearts. The Brits were equally being very benign if not more to the HKers as they are aware of the potential Chinese nationalism which may undermine their ruling. Thus, the HKers are the best winner. It is really unfair to say that HK is worse off simply because China took over. They just no longer benefit from that situation which is long gone. get over it.

  • The economic potential of HK is far greater with China than it could ever be with Britain. Plus it's only natural for Chinese people to rule themselves.

  • @saint666 the exaggerated economic potential China has is entirely because it's liberalised it's economic system allowing western technology and investment, which Hong Kong has had for hundreds of years.

  • By the same logic Japan shouldnt be able to surpass western countries because it developed in the first place by adopting western technology and systems, but they did except for America. China/japan differ in that it has natural resources and man power, what's missing is know how, which it's producing and HK has and of course foreign capital to drive everything until a certain point which it will become self sufficient within the maturing EA/SEA Eco zone. Only the Brits are missing out.

  • @saint666 Hong Kongers are not chineses dude ;)

  • Did people in Hong Kong had political freedom when HK was a British colony? Absolutely not. They could not vote for their governor nor any government official in London.

HKers in fact have more political rights today than they did under the British rule and if the progress holds they will eventually be able to directly elect their leader which was unthinkable under the British.

The people of HK make HK what it is today and that will not change as this city moves on into the future.

  • I was just wondering what Hong Kongers have to say about the Handover and whether they think life was better under British rule?

  • Life was infinitely better under British rule. The handover is a complete and utter disaster for us. Ever since 1997, we were just hit by waves after waves of incompetent and mediocre politicians. We miss the British.

  • I think there should be a vote for whether the British should have rule over HK again, let the people decide...

  • @flosssock Like Gibraltar?

  • @TheKeith1814 Yes

  • @cyklonb1989 I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!

  • honestly,i miss uk

  • Where you not given British Citizenship before the handover!? If not, that's a fucking disgrace!

  • I really hate the arrogance of the British. They call for democracy, but only Britain was allowed to appoint a British white governor to preside over Asian. They are really delusional, which is why they are so successful in pursuit of their murderous rampage. But those days are long gone.

  • Well it's those white governors who brought democracy to Hong Kong. Look at Lord Patten the last HK governor. He was a great man and much loved by the vast majority of Hong Kongers. He did much to advance Hong Kong democratically and Hong Kongers still remember him for that. So what if the governor wasn't elected. The Queen isn't either but no-one is going to say the UK is less democratic than any other country. The people who were voted for had the real power and that is democracy.

  • What? Hong Kong people didn't vote for anyone. The Queen is merely a symbolic figure. I don't get it. If the British appoint a white man to run a country full of Asians, where whites live seperately look down on Chinese. Hong Kong relied on export as it is a port for its wealth. Don't you have any pride in yourself? The white governor did what he was told. Hong Kong made a lot of money for the British. Just because you are house slave doesn't mean it is good.

  • Yes Hong Kong people did get to vote for members of their government. Hong Kong became even more democratic with His Lordship the Baron Patten as governor. That was a fact. Also him being white isn't important. What does it matter if the governor was white. What's important about a governor isn't his skin colour. It's his moral and political stands that matter and Hong Kongers realized that. And at the time everybody was just simply British so it didn't matter what he looked liked.

  • @Ooilei THAT'S RIGHT!

  • @Ooilei I agree but the Chinese stopped it happening when we hand HK over the them and instead the Chinese giving it part democracy and it will take long time for HK to get full democracy. 2012 election may not make full democracy possible and HK people know this cos pro-Beijing parties will certain to win election again.

  • And the governor acts of his own judgment. Thats why they call him a governor. It means he governs. He doesn't just do whatever people tell him to do. And I have no idea where you're getting this house slave notion from. I'm a Brit of Hong Kong descent and house slave couldn't be any farther from the truth. Hong Kongers were happy being a part of Britain because the British brought stability and rule of law not just first world standards of living. Hong Kong became great because of the British.

  • By constantly reminding people that the Governor was white, you seem to accuse the British of being racist, and yet why would it matter if he was white unless you have the same views that you accuse the British of having?

Also you don't seem to know that there was a Jewish Governor and an Indian born Governor of Hong Kong.

  • @beareroftruthiness DAMN IT

  • What the British governor ship did was to use Hong Kong for their commerce. The British Hong kong govern made a lot of money. It is one of the highest paid position. Hong Konger was simply satisfied because they live better off than the rest of China, so they made a tacit agreement to let the British rule to get the foot in the door of global commerce that was dominated by Western countries. Simply, put Hong Kongers was house slaves - if you what that means.

  • As for profit I don't think anyone has gained as much from Hong Kong as Hong Kongers have. All you have to do is go into any industry in Hong Kong and you'll see that the vast majority of those profiting are Hong Kongers themselves. People really shouldn't talk about British Hong Kong unless they are Hong Kongers or at least have been there. Otherwise they really have no true reference to be able to be qualified enough to do so. British Hong Kong was great and it's a plain and simple fact.

  • Hey! A crazy horny american here! not really! I just figure that's how most of the world views me! LOL. I just wanted to say that Hong Kong seems very well taken care of. I am planning a vacation there soon. And I think it will be a blasty blast!

  • the welsh choir are singing men of harlic

  • funny seeing all this anti britsh sentiment, when its thanks to them that hong kong is what it is today !

  • whats the song that the welsh choir is singing

  • Thank you. It rare for BBC to report on some positive comment about Chinese story. The prediction "Death of Hong Kong" 10 years ago was wrong.

  • Please Remember Hong Kong is still an independent run area as such i have family with in HK gov. HKSAR i am proud to be chinese she will always be home i maybe born in britan but still carry the HK title i can live and vote. you want to talk about freedom you don't want to live in uk or usa they are taking your rights away quickly USA patriot act UK more cctv than any where else in the world you can't say without GCHQ MI5 listining

  • I hate the chinese goverment murdering bastards. Just wait till one of those old farts decides that hong kong is dangerous to the revolution or some shit.

  • Same as the Brits who keep murdering Iraqi and the troops even record it on the tape. I can't name any country that has never been killing people

  • Yep the brits are just indiscriminatley killing Iraquis yep yep. And with permision from their goverment to.

  • @cococly WHAT!

  • @Lumotaku ME TOO!

  • I was in HK for the first time about a month ago, as a tourist. It is fantastic city. I understand your fury about the brits. It was the occupation, undoubtly, but all bad things usually bring some good with them. As a european I would be shocked if there were not english signs and info board all around city. The cultural mix defines Hong Kong and makes it one of the true World Cities. You don't call yourself "Asia's World City" for nothing.

  • @mitrowsky original HK ppl are positive about British rule before 1997. Those negative comment came from losers in mainland china. don't give a shit to them! they don't know anything about HK history

  • @popoTb Im Scottish and i agree BBC... British Bull Crap!

  • Thanks for telling the truth.

  • Do you have the whole program of Hong Kong: Ten Years On? Thanks.

  • No, unfortunately I don't.
