Jonathan Winters is THE FATHER OF IMPROV COMEDY...without him there would be no improv troupes or Whos Line(Robin Williams act would be VERY DIFFERENT also) or any of it...It all started with Mr. Winters
Brilliant comic genius , who happens to be is a great actor with impeccable timing, which can turn the simple silly into side splitting hilarious . That is Jonathan Winters ......
Jonathan Winters could come on a show like Johnny Carson and just tie his shoes and kill me. When Robin Williams was asked by Dick Cavett in an early interview who his major influences were he said,"Jonathan Winters and Alan Ludden"
After some 40 years, his caricatures remain eerily on target. I recently had to sit through an employee awards ceremony honoring someone with a personality remarkably similar to the Winterford Bowling Alleys award recipient appearing at 3:25 - 3:58.
It's stunning to see how much of Robin Williams whole personality came directly from the influence J.W. had on him......almost to the point where I have lost some respect for Williams due to his almost shameless co-opting Winters whole approach......It's really remarkable!!
I hesitate to analyze his brilliance, what sets him apart from all the rest, including his heirs apparent, Williams and Carey... but...
Improv brilliance aside, there has never been a combination of sound effects, flirting with "blue" (but never getting there), surprise, characterization, and playfulness in any comedian such as this one. Pryor, Carlin, Bruce are close...
Anyone remember a JW special from the spring of 1965, with Steve Allen, Alexander Scourby the announcer. JW did a bit on "Rumley Phips, an ancient, senile teacher, (Class of '05"), and a bit on a "family picnic", (grandma, Lenny, the hired hand). One of the funniest shows ever.
Well, think the scariness was a part of the secret to Jonathan Winter's great comedy. Or his dark side. Something that was always there even during the era of bland comedy from the 60's.
Jonathan Winters lives on in Robin Williams! Watch some of his clips and the resemblence of style is clear.

I've watched several clips of him on You Tube and I've never once seen him repeat a gag. That seems to be pretty rare for comedians.

@basserase Everything you've ever seen of Jonathan Winters on TV was created on the spot. Miraculous. Genius without peer.

Everything he says makes me laugh. He is just unnatural -- no human should be that funny so quickly.
