I think the 390 V-8 was rated at something like 335 hp, but was underrated. Anyone have facts? I knew a deputy sheriff in Mich. who chased one in the 1970s, but lost it. Deputy drove a 428 Ford. Saw the guy a week later and asked him how fast he went. Driver said "Well, if that was me, I might have topped 140." Nice.
In a nutshell, that's it....It was an exciting time! I'm sorry if I sound old to you youngsters but you don't have anything that compares to a James Marshall Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, the Who, Rory Galagher, the Airplane etc...etc. Same goes for cars. I don't find any riceburners that get my heart pumping EVER. Computer games???? Yeah if I'm sick in bed and can't do anything else. Realiity tv??? Current times exciting..........YAWN.
@nrwo2009 I think it's more like "the smart guy who gets an awesome hot fast car for a great price" muscle car. I had buddies who bought mopars and fords spent a ton on them only to spend MORE money on them to make their led sleds faster. They would hate getting beat by a Kenosha Cadillac. After I had about $2,000.00 worth of modifications done on the car (an INSANE amount of money for me back then) I don't recall ever getting beat by any of them. I loved that car, never driven in Winter.
that may be the nicest AMX I've ever seen in action . Sweet, the only AMC muscle I like are these year AMX's and the Hurst SCrambler ("The Machine" was okay) . Did hurst do a AMX ? Now my Dad lived AMC / Hudsons . I got into Mopar & GM . Some Ford guy tried telling me they put Ford motors in these(390), I told him . WRONG ! They did use Mopar automatic transmisions I believe though.....
Nice mtor dude always nice to see a restored AMC in action, I have a fully restored 1969 343 Jav myself. I am trying to find someone who can supply a Tunnel ram kit I've tried Edelbroke, Good Vibrations Racing you name it. I just can't find anyone who knows how to get hold of a Tunnel ram for an AMC motor without custom building it from scratch.. Any tips would be great..
I have heard through the grape vine that Indy Cylinder heads maybe offering a two piece manifold that you can select what style top you want. 4 barrel, dual 4's, 6 pack, etc.
The good thing about AMC's is that you never (or at least almost never) read stupid comments typed by Ford-, GM- or Mopar-fanboys. They are somewhat the Swiss of american motoring which is really relaxing because you don't have to argue with stupid dickheads.
Really, the AMX is underrated, even today. One of the best handling old american cars.
@71CommodoreGSE Loved my '70, 12.5 to 1 ratio. There were 3 or 4 of us in Chicago back in the early 70's. All beefed up 360's and 390's. Don't remember any Ford geeks talking too much smack. Still don't think there's anything out there now that compares to an AMX or Javelin. I remember buying mine from a dealership on the southside for $2,900.00. Saddest day was selling it when the Children came into the picture.
@fatuglybastard98 They didn't succeed because of their reputation as a company that builds econocars. The AMX wasn't that cheap, and it only had two seats (which affected sales). The only other american two-seater at that time was the Corvette which had a much better reputation. The result was the demisew of the AMX.
Sales don't tell much about the quality of the car, though, as every real petrolhead will tell you.
My dad has a 68 amx with a 390. alot of motor work dyno at 648 hp and the wheels naturally aspirated on 110 octane. Drag at low 10's and is street legal.ill post up a vid soon. rebuilding the motor soon since oiling system is garbage and killed the bearings :(
@VicLS9898 The oiling system isnt the best but if working correctly and good parts it works just fine. The aftermarket has screwed over AMC many times and alot of those bad parts are still out there. Know what your buying and know what to look for. Something as simple as a top timming gear is bad most of the time. (in 2 ways)
I bought a new '69 (white w/red stripes) the summer preceeding my junior year in college. Goats, SS396, Mustangs - shut them all down :- ) Sold it in 1980. Car needed some work. What a gawdawful mistake. Am still sad. All I got left is a Franklin mint replica, old photo's and some great memories...
1966 Mustang coupe here. Someone shoehorned a 351 into it. I traded it for a 1968 'Cuda...sharp as you know what but with a slant six. I only swapped because the kid I traded with was supposed to be dying from cancer.
Both of our mom's had to go with us to the DMV (Secretary of State in Michigan) to sign off the titles. There were tears between them.
Anyway, I saw this same kid outside a bowling alley about a year and a half later, and he had traded my Mustang...
Beautiful AMX, very clean, sounds beautiful... My dads got a 69, 390, big bad orange, with the shadow mask... awesome cars. Kinda sad not many people know what AMCs are, but also kinda cool that they turn heads everywhere when one comes out of the garage to cause some trouble.
@mslov001 ya know im possibly the only 12 year old that would perfer a 70 model javelin than a bugatti well I would take the bugatti then sell and buy a javeling and a gremlin and a karmin ghia
