  • i want that bass

  • How do you like your maple fretboard? Do you prefer it over rosewood? If so, why? Thanks man, love your videos!

  • This helps... I've been playing for a few years and only knew the notes on the board from routine and sound memory..... Thanks..

  • good one, i use the same technique

  • Jesus Christ! that's the lowest action I've ever seen. What kind of bass is that?

  • @eknight003 Thank you!! Ibanez from 1975. My BABY!! :)

  • is that a brass nut i see?

  • @EliSexyton Graphite.

  • I figured this out in my first month of playing bass without know it's a technique

  • yes my friend but im victor wooten student and i know what its mean

  • its not true, b to c on the a strings ?!!!!!!

  • I picked up the bass yesterday and this got me to know the notes today. Awesome. Thank You

  • Wow this was awesome thank you so much for showing me the natural notes. I've been going by sounds too, but now i know the actual notes I've been playing \m/

  • keep it up bro enjoyed the lesson

  • Good stuff thank you!

  • Ya good videos but for the rest of your videos make it easier to see where your placing your fingers. For beginners like myself sometime I can't tell what finger is going where.

  • my bass teacher just showed me that a couple weeks ago.

  • By seriuos do you mean

    *Puts on sunglasses*

    Funky seriuos?

  • Great teaching method. It makes tho whole fingerboard a bunch easier. Sure wish I had seen this before going the rote route.

     Very much enjoying your Vids!

  • On every Bar I stuck on a slip of paper with the notes on it at the proper place under the string (just natural notes, no sharps/flats). Constantly under the eyes they will be easily remembered in a short time. Maybe forever :-)

After it I thought about the conspicuous geometric..

    Nice video, keep on!

  • the title really doesn,t matter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i've spend 60 days tryng to acomplish my very first line from your lessons. and i'll spent more time if need .

very very gratefull whit your contribution joe now i'm best bass player than 60 seconds before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (joke) Kind regards

  • @3musicmakers You can do it that way. That becomes a shape theory. It's all geometric. That's where I start most players off. Learn shapes. The notes will come by association. In my opinion they should be learned concurrently. That way you'll get the maximum benefit! Take care.

  • this is 60 seconds??

  • @mets50504 Too long? :)

  • @CoolBear777 No no dont get me wrong. this is a great lesson here for a beginner like myself. im just saying. u shouldnt title it "Bass in 60 seconds" when it surely is not 60 seconds

  • @mets50504 I can't change the title of my videos now. That's how everyone knows me. They've been getting longer. I have so much information I want to share. 60 seconds just isn't enough anymore. :)

  • @mets50504 it is name "60 seconds" because that's the time it takes for the first moron to remark something that is so obvious and out of topic!

Keep them coming Joe! you made me see the light!!!

  • learning guitar is easy once your fingers develop over your first 6-12months and learn some chords and a little music theory. what most dont see until its a roadblock in ability, is that the same note exists somewhere on a previous string and taking into account certain scales when reading music. memorize every fret on every string, theres no other way except playing for just that much longer.

  • @Pimpmastahanhduece It all comes down to the commitment and time you put in. I have students that started with nothing and became monsters in a few months. I have others who still don't know the notes on the fingerboard after a couple of years. Just depends.

  • some become very good, im pretty good at playing, but i suck so much in theory, i dont even attempt writing. but anyone can be decent with any instrument unless they have a deformity or condition in 2 years if they really applied themselves, IMO. i know theory is important to understanding music but, to me at least, memorization of every note for every fret on every string is often a brick wall and one essential stepping stone to becoming "good".

  • @Pimpmastahanhduece I'm not saying theory is easy, but I have to say my videos, and a lot of the ones that are out there, are really good at showing the way. There are no hard and fast rules as to when someone gets "good". I suggest if anyone wants to learn the fingerboard, they should take it in bite-sized chunks. Open string to 5th fret on every string should be good to start. Then move on to the next 5 frets and so on. Natural notes only. You'll learn sharps and flats by association.

  • Do you often play the fretted string at the 5th fret rather than the open string? I find it easier to play the open string when singing as well as when I want to give the tune a bit more movement, ala McCartney. I guess I like that 50s bop sound.

I realize the reason why you do so in your videos but I wanted to see you play the strings open.

I like watching the different videos put up by players such as yourself but 36 years of playing makes me a bit impatient.

    Keep it up.

  • @alwaysopen Depends on what I'm playing and the shifts involved. I play all over the place. I never sit still. I try not to get too complacent. :)

  • @CoolBear777

I agree with moving around as I do as well when playing bass. I was a bassist before a guitarist - knowing both is a blast and you are as good on one as the other if you applied yourself to learning. I need to better my keyboard skills.

  • @alwaysopen You and me both, brother! :) I may do a keyboard for bass players video.

  • bass sounds great the nut is bone?graphite?

  • @dreadtodred Graphite. Maybe someday I'll have a brass one made!

  • what year is your bass?

  • @xGreenHouseVidiosx My baby is 35 years old! I love it! My dad got it back in 1975.

  • Question, so a half step would be inbetween frets?

  • Two frets (whole step), one fret ( half step)

  • Thank you!

  • wen i was a kid lead guitar notation was my weakness but this helps me alot now as an adult doing bass for the first time

  • dis has jus opened my eyes 2 a world of more i deas

  • Very Helpful.........Thanks!>>>

  • Are those flatwounds?

  • Roundwounds.

  • yes! helpful!

  • Haha.

2:30 reminds me of the bassline to anyway you want it by journey.

but nice video, i learned alot from it.

I used to learn sounds before notes too when i started.

    thanks for the vids! =]

  • what bass is this? its sound great and look cool im going to get a new bass soon but dont know what i want :P

  • it's an Fender Jazz copy by Ibanez from 1975. If you want a bass like this ur best luck is with fender

  • thx mate ^^

  • Look them up on Ebay. I'm considering buiing up a couple more. I feel so at home with the Ibanez basses. No disrespect to the Fenders. They're great guitars as well.

  • I'm a fan of the Ibanez SR-500 series. Had the 4 and now the 6.

  • guess what, joe? you're worthy of becoming a representative for a bass brand!

  • What brand might that be? Thank you for the kind words. All the best!

  • look at the TrashTiiDeeath comment, he wants to buy a bass just like yours.

and hey, glad to have you back on youtube, how's your dad?

  • Thank you so much. My dad is hanging in there. It rough going but he has a great attitude. I'll be posting more vids real soon. Take care.

  • sometimes that great attitude can make all the difference it needs.

anyway, do you play an ibanez bass with double single coil pickups (a.k.a jazz bass copy)? how much does that cost? i'm not so keen on my current ibanez p-bass copy.

  • Sorry it took so long! Attitude! Powerful stuff! I took out the old pick ups out and replaced them with DiMarzio single coils. Love the tone! I believe they're wound a bit hotter than the stock ones. I replaced the controls as well. I'm very happy with it now.

  • the fretboard is exactly like mine, i got this old fresher bass. nice bass mr. bear

  • Bear, Talk about the markings found on the fretboard on the 1,3,5,7 and so on.

    Thanks.

  • i have learned a bit on the notes of the fret board but i am not quite fluent in it yet. luckily i will get to practice more this summer. this video was very helpful, thanks joe

  • Great video. And always great information.

  • lol this was pretty helpful. i'll find out sooner or later

  • Really nice.. Haven't gotten into this kinda stuff yet but this really helps! Thanks

  • as always, a great, informative video
