MMA is a new fancy term for what has always existed in MA, add some of this and a little bit of that. Now, when Bruce Lee and Ed Parker were living in Mr. Parker's house they noticed that the idea to "mix" styles was the true way becuz fighting evolves. Parker said screw the Chinese names and get down to biz.....modern MMA was born!
like i've said before in other videos of his, his form is sloppy and an opponent will never stay still, one question if you get beat up would you try and run away. or stand there like an idiot, watch the video and you'll know what i am talking about
LOL! So true man. His body mechanics was very poor. His feet didn't even move throughout the whole technique except for that "finishing" kick. No hip movements make punches very weak. It looks like he's stretching to hit the guy. Plus he's bending forward, making him unbalanced. 10th degree my ass.
The poor guy in this video is so out of shape that he can hardly move at all. Was he ever in shape or skilled ? I would take these videos off to avoid more embarrassment . I am sure he is a nice fellow but he should retire now.

The guy on the right would be typical of 90% of Ke?po instructors if he only gained a few more pounds in his midsection, a few more stripes on his belt, a little less hair on top and a rainbow or gold colored gi when he's not wearing the d34dly black gi.
At least he's doing the typical compliant drill bullshit and minimizing sparring.
@Ljenkins9000 Absolutely correct in your assessment. This demo is worse than awful.....I have had students with only a year of training who are far better.
@abomb10 Yeah he is being too nice, which doesn't benefit his partner at all. Maybe I just don't have experienced eyes yet (only been taking Shaolin Kempo for 10 months) but did he palm strike the guy in the chest, or was he pushing him?

@Doeboy555 - the idea of practicing these techniques is just that. they are techniques. they are meant to teach a student various ways of striking targets, moving around a body, blocking, taking an opponent down etc etc. In my years of teaching and the various instructors i've trained with over the years, none would say that by practicing a "technique" it is the way you defend yourself. they are simply methods for learning the tools and reactions you would use in a real life situation.
@Doeboy555 - just think of it like jujitsu if that's what you study. to learn how to do a submission or an arm bar or any hold you need to first practice it slowly, methodically and with little resistance. once you have that down you can speed it up and have your partner start to try and block your attempts. it's no different here. these techniques and applications are mastered and then put to test through sparring with a partner.
I am about Joe's age and I have been training in Clear Combat Fighting System for about a year and i will clean this guys clock. We punch hard with the full hip extension. We use some open hands but this guy is terrible. He has no foot work, his chin is down and he cannot kick. In my system we use greco/roman and judo for the clinch, then down to the ground briefly for the choke, no pre-longed ground game
@clearcombat yea this looks silly like i said your better off training a actual fighting art..you would proly have a better chance swinging at random than taking time to pull this ineffective moves off
@clearcombat- any ground fighting on the street is too slow, I had an MMA buddy that took a knife from the back side in the prostate bacause his ground fighting was too slow for multiple opponets. I have to agree this guy is a joke, but I have studied Kenpo for 25 years, I was once jumped by 3 guys and they all found there asses on the ground in under 10 seconds so I know it works. I teach and I encourage peeps to be strikers for street fighting, know enough ground to get off of it.
@Qikung ground fighting in the literal streets is no fun jagged rocks going into your side possibly broken glass bottles cutting into you not to mention even getting to the ground hurts can lower your field of vision (hence looking down towards ground level instead of where your next opponent may be at) oh and the occasional nail or broken bolt on the ground or even on ground you have stickers thorns and dirt flying up just figured id add this within your comment to give more depth

This is a shame for kenpo. I take Canadian Kenpo (JGA) and we're not bitch slapping each other, we learn effective attacks and realistic self defense.
Joe, if a genuine Japanese martial artist masters sees what you just did, he probably will shake his head and mumble under his breath, "What has the Americans done to the art of my country?" In other words, Joe, you and Eddy Parker just made up all these wazas by way of that idiot, Billy Chow. Ay Yah, Joey. Please go find an honest job to do, and earn an honest living. Do you still know how to work for a living, Joey?
If the fall was more real or even real depending on the force of the kick to the groin, I'm pretty much picturing pretty much a bat up his balls xD...yeah it WOULD hurt big time xD
watts your name...n your instructors name...word of advice a slap does so little damage compared to other strikes...if you look over ed parker he does breaking bones n never a slap...
Am I the only one here who actually DOES and USES Kenpo?
It's an art of manipulation and rapid-fire. All martial arts have their own style and uses. We learn so many different strikes and checks so that we can adapt to ever-changing fighting situations. It's not "useless". It's just precautionary. And the strikes aren't weak. A fast strike doesn't necessarily equal a weak strike. Kenpo is a quick art.
yeah a strike can be fast and powerful at the same time but combination strike are weaker then just a a single straight hard strike but there fast and they target the weak point on the human body making them still effective and disabling
I'm agree with you guys this guy sucks he doesn't deserve the belt but bolieve i studied kenpo and i' just a green belt but i have learnd a lot and irespect all tecniques from other stiles and for me any stile is good it depens on you how much you train
If you dont study KEMPO KARATE you arent qualified to make an educated guess about it. I suggest you seek proffesional assistance from a reputable teacher. Respectfully me
There are arts very similar to kenpo and there are martialartists who sparred with kenpo/kempo students as well as seen them in competitions. No one is saying that everything about Kenpo/Kempo is useless. There are a lot of tough Kenpo/Kempo guys. But some schools (not all) push memorization or technique and performance over conditioning the individual. So Kenpo/Kempo guys get hurt when presented with uncooperative conditioned opponent.
What these Kenpo masters dont get, is that their techniques will not stop anyone. The checks, positional checks, picks, pricks, chops and weak strikes, wont put a dent into an aggressor. I have seen people fight with poked eyes, after being groin kicked, broken arms from arm bars, shattered jaws and broken noses. I doubt the two people in the video ever got punched in the face. When showing useless techniques, the instructor should ahve some liability to his students who may get injured.
I agree if the agressor is on drugs or in a blind rage. Otherwise :Find a club and ask for a trial lesson.
If you fnd the courrage to try out a punch and see/feel the defensive technique, I believe you won't doubt anymore. Most techniques well knock you out, or at least take your breath away for some time. The techniques are repeated over and over untill they become natural reflexes. Also keep in mind that a good kenpo karateka will lure you into a predictable attack....
These techniques are worthless, teach people bad habbits, and even though Kempo karate has colorful names for techniques, they will FAIL. What is this nonense? It is clear that this guy never had to defend himself for real or was in any martial arts event had any (even very light) contact. I did find some full contact Kempo fights in Youtube. Guess what, they all look like bad boxing and grappling. No nine swords, flower duck, breaking twig techniques are ever used.
so theres loads people bitchin about how bad this video is...but...
who cares if it works? seriously? if he did this for real and managed to injure him enough to give him the chance to run or do more damage...who cares? seriously?
i know technique is important...but if it works enough to allow for escape...who cares?
I'm new to Youtube, and I'm a martial arts junky. I think the problem is, on Youtube, anyone can demonstrate techniques and claim that they are effective or deadly. And, unfortunately, there are way too many people who believe that. So, this sets up people getting hurt. Above you see a low percentage technique that the instructor himself most likely never used. For me, an instructor should have some liability when demonstrating garbage and passing it as self defense.
I take jujitsu(traditional). Personally i can think of at least ten different ways do defend this just off the top of my head. It's all in what works for you but, if your attacker is going to leave such a vital area like the face/head open why not palm strike straight to the nose or just straight right cross to the face and then perhaps a kick to the groin depending on what happens after the head strike and then disengaging? Isn't that wasting less motion that a four punch combo?
this juy sucks. hes sloppy as hell. has no focuss, no power, no tourqe, this is not kenpo, i am a black belt and this techniques dies work, but u dont need to cross your hands like that just put em together and seperate the hands of your oponent. thats it.
everybody has to understand what trhey doing, if i do al the small principles like, timing, focus, generating power with my body and all that, most people wont understand what he is doing that and WHY he is doing that, i;m not a karateka (i;m sorry if i writh it wrong) so i know less about karate as you, but the point is that this is a video, just for beginners to learn, not for more skilled warrior.
I love Kenpo but this must be a Joke!!!First He has hick ups,... then no power, no focuss no nothing. Black belt??? Is it a Calvin Klein Belt??? 10th Dan???? Did he get that from a CEREAL BOX??? I mean what sort of technique is that??? WORST KENPO IVE EVER SEEN!!!! Really sry to say but I feel embarased for all kenpo students and masters, INCLUDING ME!!!
YOu know i'm not gonna bash him guys, listen martial arts is respect. I've done kenpo since I was nine (i'm 18 now) nad yeah sure we could critique him, but we could all find flaws in ANY martial artist that's what martial arts is PERFECTING your art. Yeah he's higher in rank and he didn't do a few things right. But guys let's show respect, BTW if people get a wrong impression of you or Kenpo because of this video. Don't worry about it. You know what you know, and that's all the matters.
lol deceptivepanther.. I really think you have something against Mr. Palanzo.. you cut down every one of his videos. The sad part is.....
Your comments are very justified. I find it hard to believe even a 1st dan would perform techniques with such sloppiness and lack of control. much less a 10th. I wonder if Mr. Palanzo paid for his rank like many others out there.
The thing is, I spend money advertising my kenpo club, prospective students look up YouTube to see what Kenpo is and when they see Mr.Palanzo I'm afraid that they write me off. I truly don't want to be disrespectful but it's just not fair on the rest of us. I wish some of the really great kenpoists out there would upload some good vids but those guys don't seem too bothered. I'm very average myself. I am assured by one irate commentator that Mr.Palanzo's rank is entirely justified! I dunno.
Isn't Mr. palazo showing bad form by leaning his head forward during this technique? Shouldn't he be using the forward bow stance? He uses the term 'forward bow' but shouldn't his heel be on the ground and his leg straightened? His width doesn't seem to change at all in his opening demonstration. Shouldn't his left hand use friction as a riding check? Isn't he way out of range?
Why are so many american kenpo "experts" fat and out of shape? Seriously, most of them look like they'd get gassed in a real fight. At least Larry Tatum has kept himself in shape.
there is something called "fit and fat" joe palanzo could very well be rather muscular as well, its hard to tell while he is wearing a gi. besides that martial arts works a wide range of muscles and allows flexibility. at least he does omething but he is heftier. oh well...
These techniques are not mean't for you to use step by step when being attacked. They are used to teach footwork, movement, and the technique of American Kenpo. A lot of the techniques involve a number of hits, but honestly...no one would last through taking the whole technique if it were for real anyhow. There is a purpose of why they are taught.
The technique is taught correctly but the performance of the technique has no substance. This is good representation of a lot of kenpo students and teachers. Good examples of what kenpo should look like can be found on Youtube if you look hard enough. No disrespect intended.
the techniques are taught jus to show you what you could do. you guys quit runnin your mouths if you dont know what your talkin about. Joe palanzo could wreck any one of you guys. have some respect
Joe Palanzo is a tenth degree black belt. 3 out of 100 people are martial arts students and and mostly 0 out of 3 get black belts. So joeboyfresh is right show some respect.
Wow, what a mess. He needs to slow down, and remember what he is trying to do. Watching his full speed version makes me very grateful I had an excellent instructor. He kept the same stance the whole way, except of course that extremely correographed right ball kick. I'm still trying to figure out why he brought the rear foot forward, placed it down, ended up in a terrible stance, then proceeded to lift the leg for the kick. I have worked with yellow belts with more control.
when he hooks the eyes the guy would most likely grab his own face.... when he hits him in the ribs it breaks his ribs ... when he hits him in the throat it crushes his wind pipe ..... what is he suppose to do?
wow...i liked how he bitch slapped the dude and then kicked him....only for the dude to fall down 2 seconds later like a time delayed retard...real realistic. *rolls eyes*
Im sure that the martial is crazy strong, but this dude is just gay. Expert Village just sucks at life when it comes to showing how to do stuff
Many who have studied martial arts, I'm sure would say that the 1st time they learned a technique the Instructor, regardless of their level of skill or degree in knowledge and exp did not throw a multiple strike attack at them, but, gave them a for instance encounter. A basis from which they could build a placement of counter strike & adjustments in reaction to what potentially the attacker may in turn do & as the student progresses both attacks and responses become more intuitive.
and as selfdefence you dont use hard technique like this ending with kick to the groin to the simple push.. for this purpouse we have soft techniques...
omg this is pure crap, middle figre strike
this dude needs a lesson in real street fighting
i wonder how he will deliver this punch to somebody 2x his size in night with developed muscles and knolage of simple boxing
Two words Ed Parker...bro I saw him move and felt his thunder...Danny and Bruce Lee were under him as black belts...you can talk stuff about Joe, but Parker the creator of the system was brutal!!
Much ado about nothing. Why even honor an attack like that with a counter? Or a seven move counter like what's shown here? You'd honestly respond to a push with a counter like that?
He taught the technique somewhat right but the way it is performed in the beginning is like a slap fight. He might want to look up what a power principle is. People like this make Kenpo look bad.
These techniques simply will not work against anyone who punches in combination or has at least 6 months boxing training. I use to be impressed by these flashy moves when I was a teenagers and watching Jeff Speakman movies.
script it when i kick your ankle fall over it looks good for the camera bro ill give you a month of lessons for free, but its still 5000 dollers for a black belt. lol
Great technique when done "properly". American Kenpo is one of the best Martial Arts if you are interested in self defense and not ineffective fancy high kicks.
I've been training for quite a few years and we have a technique almost identical to this (excludes the kick) so I know what I'm talking about when I say his technique is HORRIBLE. Just one think I'd like to point out is about 5-6 seconds in, before he throws the front kick, he squares his body to the opponent. BAD TECHNIQUE.
Those ineffectual looking movements he's making with his left hand could be interpreted as rakes to the face. When you think about it that way-- eye rakes from conditioned fingers along with the power strikes delivered to vulnerable points by the right hand-- it starts looking a little more effective, yes?
I still think there are much better arts out there. most trad art training methodologies are stuck in the 1950s.
what i don't like about techniques...is when the aggressor stands there n' let u do a technique on them. ..totally unreal! i noticed people in stand up particularly kenpo, have not evolved like ed parker would have wanted them to do. there are two fighters that i know of who are "not stuck in time"! (Chuck Sullivan n' Steve Muhammad) When will the rest of em' go beyond theory?
The funniest thing is that people actually believe that techniques like that will work on someone bigger and stronger than you, who is DETERMINED to do you harm.
Solar plexus hits and chicken wings my ass...eyes, throat or genitals to begin with. The rest are technicalities to finish the job.
of course each master preformed his techniques a little diferent, but its all the same motion and principles, on the street this technique can be aplied delivering all 4 blows in just one second. trust me it works.
this technique does work. Ive done it on the street, U must be very quick and very pricise the target wonto know what hit him. some guy came and tried to push mi very hard. y aplied the tecnique the first blow to the solar plexus and the eye scrap took him out instantly the rest of the technique well i did it because i needed to be sure he was out. jaja remember the only way to know if a technique work is to practice it full power on some on o do it on the street.
por chantas como este se denigran las artes marciales la tecnica parting wins funciona siempre y cuando este bien ejecutada y no como este tarado que tira manotazos sin sentido
kenpo really does work, the fight lasts only 5 seconds, I am a purple belt and recently got in a fight with some idiot at school because he sexual harassing my sister, he threw a punch i did 5 swords and he went down like a rock
MMA is a new fancy term for what has always existed in MA, add some of this and a little bit of that. i have never seen a kenpo technique that isn't shit.

CortneyMinusYou 2 years ago
yeah a strike can be fast and powerful at the same time but combination strike are weaker then just a a single straight hard strike but there fast and they target the weak point on the human body making them still effective and disabling

tbagmodderz 1 year ago
There are arts very similar to kenpo and there are martialartists who sparred with kenpo/kempo students as well as seen them in competitions. No one is saying that everything about Kenpo/Kempo is useless. There are a lot of tough Kenpo/Kempo guys. But some schools (not all) push memorization or technique and performance over conditioning the individual. So Kenpo/Kempo guys get hurt when presented with uncooperative conditioned opponent.
BushidoCode72 2 years ago
What these Kenpo masters dont get, is that their techniques will not stop anyone. The checks, positional checks, picks, pricks, chops and weak strikes, wont put a dent into an aggressor. I have seen people fight with poked eyes, after being groin kicked, broken arms from arm bars, shattered jaws and broken noses. I doubt the two people in the video ever got punched in the face. When showing useless techniques, the instructor should ahve some liability to his students who may get injured.
BushidoCode72 2 years ago
I agree if the agressor is on drugs or in a blind rage. Otherwise :Find a club and ask for a trial lesson.
If you fnd the courrage to try out a punch and see/feel the defensive technique, I believe you won't doubt anymore. Most techniques well knock you out, or at least take your breath away for some time. The techniques are repeated over and over untill they become natural reflexes. Also keep in mind that a good kenpo karateka will lure you into a predictable attack....
Erwt64 2 years ago
These techniques are worthless, teach people bad habbits, and even though Kempo karate has colorful names for techniques, they will FAIL. What is this nonense? It is clear that this guy never had to defend himself for real or was in any martial arts event had any (even very light) contact. I did find some full contact Kempo fights in Youtube. Guess what, they all look like bad boxing and grappling. No nine swords, flower duck, breaking twig techniques are ever used.

Whats his intend to go to the public when his ability is obviously more than low? What`s the teach? Principles? No, he even violates them.
Maybe he wants to show his nice belt.
aikikenpo 2 years ago
so theres loads people bitchin about how bad this video is...but...
who cares if it works? seriously? if he did this for real and managed to injure him enough to give him the chance to run or do more damage...who cares? seriously?
i know technique is important...but if it works enough to allow for escape...who cares?
dannyday58218195 2 years ago
I'm new to Youtube, and I'm a martial arts junky. I think the problem is, on Youtube, anyone can demonstrate techniques and claim that they are effective or deadly. And, unfortunately, there are way too many people who believe that. So, this sets up people getting hurt. Above you see a low percentage technique that the instructor himself most likely never used. For me, an instructor should have some liability when demonstrating garbage and passing it as self defense.

Worst video on parting wings I have EVER watched. Give back your Blue Belt sir.
theaxemansmithe 2 years ago
I take jujitsu(traditional). Personally i can think of at least ten different ways do defend this just off the top of my head. It's all in what works for you but, if your attacker is going to leave such a vital area like the face/head open why not palm strike straight to the nose or just straight right cross to the face and then perhaps a kick to the groin depending on what happens after the head strike and then disengaging? Isn't that wasting less motion that a four punch combo?

Okay.....after watching this again, this is just retarded. Not to mention the embarrassing "osu" grunt at the beginning

alexcolman1 2 years ago
cuz its just a slow demonstration?
everybody has to understand what trhey doing, if i do al the small principles like, timing, focus, generating power with my body and all that, most people wont understand what he is doing that and WHY he is doing that, i;m not a karateka (i;m sorry if i writh it wrong) so i know less about karate as you, but the point is that this is a video, just for beginners to learn, not for more skilled warrior.

You know what you know, and that's all the matters.
codabowsrock 2 years ago
lol deceptivepanther.. I really think you have something against Mr. Palanzo.. you cut down every one of his videos. The sad part is.....
Your comments are very justified. I find it hard to believe even a 1st dan would perform techniques with such sloppiness and lack of control. much less a 10th. I wonder if Mr. Palanzo paid for his rank like many others out there.
ukkodiak 2 years ago

He's sloppy at best. He's wheezing during the explaination. He's a hack.

Why are so many american kenpo "experts" fat and out of shape? Seriously, most of them look like they'd get gassed in a real fight. At least Larry Tatum has kept himself in shape.
MarisaLimon88 2 years ago
there is something called "fit and fat" joe palanzo could very well be rather muscular as well, its hard to tell while he is wearing a gi. besides that martial arts works a wide range of muscles and allows flexibility. at least he does omething but he is heftier. oh well...

These techniques are not mean't for you to use step by step when being attacked. They are used to teach footwork, movement, and the technique of American Kenpo. A lot of the techniques involve a number of hits, but honestly...no one would last through taking the whole technique if it were for real anyhow. There is a purpose of why they are taught.
regisivjosh7 2 years ago
The technique is taught correctly but the performance of the technique has no substance. This is good representation of a lot of kenpo students and teachers. Good examples of what kenpo should look like can be found on Youtube if you look hard enough. No disrespect intended.
revolutionkenpo 2 years ago
the techniques are taught jus to show you what you could do. you guys quit runnin your mouths if you dont know what your talkin about. Joe palanzo could wreck any one of you guys. have some respect

Joe Palanzo is a tenth degree black belt. 3 out of 100 people are martial arts students and and mostly 0 out of 3 get black belts. So joeboyfresh is right show some respect.
magicwizard532 2 years ago
Yeah but having a black belt and having actual fighting experience are two COMPLETELY different things.
And Joe's technique was sloppy at the beginning. He fought like a drag queen.

7m28 2 years ago
Many who have studied martial arts, I'm sure would say that the 1st time they learned a technique the Instructor, regardless of their level of skill or degree in knowledge and exp did not throw a multiple strike attack at them, but, gave them a for instance encounter. A basis from which they could build a placement of counter strike & adjustments in reaction to what potentially the attacker may in turn do & as the student progresses both attacks and responses become more intuitive.
Seisbran 2 years ago
I suppose this could work of the attacker just stands there are does nothing :P

this is pure shit any martial artist can see it
and as selfdefence you dont use hard technique like this ending with kick to the groin to the simple push.. for this purpouse we have soft techniques...
omg this is pure crap, middle figre strike
this dude needs a lesson in real street fighting
i wonder how he will deliver this punch to somebody 2x his size in night with developed muscles and knolage of simple boxing
then Joe Palanzo is doomed
BonAquak 2 years ago
I got to agree that responding to a little push with a load of strikes is ridiculous.
However, must ask, whats wrong with the middle finger strike?
Many forms of Karate utilize that. Extending joint of middle finger from your fist. If done right, and if the guy is skilled enough, it can work.

He taught the technique somewhat right but the way it is performed in the beginning is like a slap fight. He might want to look up what a power principle is. People like this make Kenpo look bad.

Great technique when done "properly". American Kenpo is one of the best Martial Arts if you are interested in self defense and not ineffective fancy high kicks.
PUNGOROGER 3 years ago
I've been training for quite a few years and we have a technique almost identical to this (excludes the kick) so I know what I'm talking about when I say his technique is HORRIBLE. Just one think I'd like to point out is about 5-6 seconds in, before he throws the front kick, he squares his body to the opponent. BAD TECHNIQUE.

bigj41004 3 years ago
kempo is rather different from most other karate.
Those ineffectual looking movements he's making with his left hand could be interpreted as rakes to the face. When you think about it that way-- eye rakes from conditioned fingers along with the power strikes delivered to vulnerable points by the right hand-- it starts looking a little more effective, yes?
I still think there are much better arts out there. most trad art training methodologies are stuck in the 1950s.
carcosa 3 years ago
what i don't like about techniques...is when the aggressor stands there n' let u do a technique on them. ..totally unreal! i noticed people in stand up particularly kenpo, have not evolved like ed parker would have wanted them to do. there are two fighters that i know of who are "not stuck in time"!

LisztianGR 3 years ago
of course each master preformed his techniques a little diferent, but its all the same motion and principles, on the street this technique can be aplied delivering all 4 blows in just one second. trust me it works.
alexcolman1 3 years ago
this technique does work.
