If the special effects (or lack thereof) alone make you unable to enjoy Star Trek, you must be the one on drugs... Whilst I agree this episode simply did not work for a variety of reasons, other ones like Balance of Terror and Doomsday Machine were brilliant, and even made decent use of the show's limited effects budget where this episode failed to.
