Personally, I find that this whole religious debate is a little tricky because religion is a semi-bad/semi-good thing. I'll use your example. True, religion did halt human advancement for a long time during the dark/middle ages. However, Rome had just fallen and a lot of Europe had lost hope in this world. The moral code of religion (i.e. heaven and hell) was really the only thing people had to live for. The world, just maybe, could have ended up worse than it is today.

Personally, I find that this whole religious debate is a little tricky because religion is a semi-bad/semi-good thing. I'll use your example. True, religion did halt human advancement for a long time during the dark/middle ages. However, Rome had just fallen and a lot of Europe had lost hope in this world. The moral code of religion (i.e. heaven and hell) was really the only thing people had to live for. The world, just maybe, could have ended up worse than it is today.
