This scene just shows her range as an actress. She was brilliant here. You can just feel the anger and rage when she says "NO and don't ask again, it's useless, nothing is possible anymore"
without attribution to the play or opera, I actually liked Passolini's cinematic version of Medea. It has that authenticity, from the primeval landscapes - which I assume were shot in a real location - to the outlandish costumes. This is how I would envision the story, at least in a visual sense. There's a humanity in Medea here; she's really more of a lover than anything. One should have a familiarity to Passolini's work to understand it.
I have the feeling the whole movie was about her features. Very shallow interpretation of this classical story. I am a Callas fan, but she should sing opera, not play in movies. Plastic and unconvincing.
it sad ahy would Medea do that to her own children that sad but her damn Husband had to leave her I LOVE MEDEA SHE MY TYPE OF GIRL IM A GIRL BUT SHE TOTALLY AWESOEM
GOOD NEWS dear Callas fans!!!! Striker capitulates! The automated production of feces is over. He's a nervous wreck because the great Filaredo gang has destroyed the white knight on his black donkey. Striker, you are alone in a hopeless plight!Go home and lick your wounds!!! Hoohooohaahaahhhaaa..... what a wonderful world...!!! Striker is only a picture of misery.....LOL
i am just discovering pasolinis movies, after watching salo and now this :oceans depths of sensations. i am excited to continue watching his movies. thanks.
@blacked3window Well in the play which this is based from, I believe she lived she just escaped by revealing her true form as a goddess to him or something, leaving him there to mourn. The play by Euripides is excellent....way better than this so you might wanna give it a read, it's tragic but it's a good read.
@shanae48228 Medea was a grandaughter of the sun. He sent a chariot drawn by dragons to take her away. Jason's punishment for his perfidy towards Medea was to forever mourn his sons. As his own actions caused their deaths, he could not avenge them.
I'm an aspiring actor and Callas is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. She always reminds me by her example to always perform with authority and conviction. This performance is evidence of the command she had as an actress. It's splendid work. I kept thinking, "is she going to go there," and by the end of the film I was thinking, "she went there!"
@ShamusMacGuffin let me correct you a little be. She was a perfectionist ... in lots interviews she does admit it that whatever she does she wants it perfect. And she can drive herself nuts if she doens't get to the point she wants to get. So not just a singer, or a teacher, or an actress, but in everything she did she always tried her best
thank you for posting this treasure!...

Nothing beats Callas as a deranged Medea

As much as I enjoyed this, I can't help but feel that Callas' talents were completely squandered here. I believe it could have been so much more.
