That song was not made for his voice to sing. He just doesn't sing like Arch so this song just does not work for Alder. Stop trying to sing Arch's stuff and we'll be a bit happier.
This is why I never thought Ray was the right replacement for Arch a something they shouldn't have done ever in the first place but if they were it should have been somebody who could hit the octaves back then; so steal Midnight from Crimson Glory or call the guy from Agent steel etc.I know some people love Alder but the band wrote this song he's killing and any musician will tell you they wouldn't have written it and recorded it unless they had love for it especially in this genre of music.

the "we should be held so high" verses always reminded me of the rants that Oliver Wendall Douglas would go on on the old Green Acres eps, you know where the fife and drum would start in behind him and he was the only one that couldn't hear it.

Actually there was a recent interview where he announced that they are set out for a new record in 2010 and they have been actively playing at every prog power show plus Frank Aresti is back in the band too :) they haven't updated the sites yet but yes FATES Warning is very much active !
They should go out and do a tour of the old shit. Awaken The Guardian is such a phenomenal record. Ray does as good a job as John used to do live...maybe better. Seriously...John could barely hit those notes live.

Arch rules. The voice was the band. As recognizable and unique as any rock/metal/whatever singer as you can name. I've always thought they pretty much tread water as far as stylistic growth with Ray (great as he is) after Arch went. Where as the first three albums reinvented and refined the songwriting as well as the man's vocal style each time. Viva indeed brother.
