Uncle Tom was a slave who was the protector of other slaves, giving them insight on what the slave owners were doing etc....At some point the original definition became flipped with a neo-connotation: it now means a person who does not protect their own...So not what Stowe's character was intended to portray but such is literally culture and the history of words.

Criticism of any President is fine, but Smiley and West have gone way beyond criticism. NOW they both are talking about a bus tour to focus on the poor. I agree with everything Steve Harvey said, except the Uncle Tom part. I wouldn't call Smiley or West Uncle Tom's, but I do think that they are judging President Obama by a tougher standard than they did past presidents. With West and Smiley, it almost seems like a personal attack on the President. Criticism is fine, but Smiley and West have gone way beyond criticism. They are in attack mode. Perhaps they will both be happy if a Republican wins the White House in 2012.

I disagree with the "Uncle Tom" classification of Cornel West and Tavis Smiley, but where Steve Harvey's displeasure comes from is a valid place. In a world where soundbites trump nuance, all their commentary tends to do is add to an indistinguishable dogpile. Even though Tavis said the right thing about the type of criticism that gets a pass... it'll be ignored. Tavis especially lets his personal feelings cloud his critiques. @theultimaterockr in my experience, Its anyone who opposes the right is called names whether they deserved it or not. and your 3/4th number is made up if you are talking about local stations, and if you are talking the major news networks, Fox has more viewers than the other 3 networks combined. So 3/4th doesnt matter when you have 1/2 the total viewers. So its more than fair.

MSNBC, ABC, and CNN = Left FOX=Right is what I was talking about. The most bias of the 4 is MSNBC. They kiss Obama's ass on a daily bases because the President and their CEO are buddy buddy. and like i said about the 3/4th, I acknowledged that you were talking about the national news networks.and My point of that is, Fox still has 1/2 of the viewership, so it really doesnt matter if there are 3 left networks( and CNN and ABC are more neutral than left), because Fox still pulls more viewers than the first 2 combined.

Ok, my understanding of the concept of the "Uncle Tom" could make Steve Harvey the uncle tom. I don't support Obama, not because he's black, but because he has continued Bush era policies: tax cuts for the wealthy, wall street bail outs etc, Of late he seems to be willing to throw his base under the bus regarding the debt ceiling etc.,cause it might just help him get re-elected. In a way, maybe even Obama is an Uncle Tom for being subservient the Corporatist republican masters.

He hasn't done any of his promises, so the uninformed either won't go out to vote this time AT ALL due to the lack of passion and lack of gimmicks (the young, black card is over and done with, and that change isn't goin to well for um), and the informed such as us can't stand him anymore! Run left to get the nomination & elected then lead from the center. though Obama is leading right of center. since he's running unopposed he doesn't need the progressives anymore. so he's going to try to appeal to moderate democrats, liberals & swing voters as someone can compromise in Washington. & since republicans really offer nothing to minority voters. Also, I think he's counting on the fear of right wing reactionaries to get him re-elected.
