In So Cal, there are still a few parks with these slides. We called them "finger deathtraps". They're not as long, but damn they were the BEST! Sitting on a cardboard sheet can help dull the vibrations (and keep the hem of your shorts from getting caught).

I don't think it's blood. If you look as the guy slides by there's Japanese maple trees on the side. Those had red leaves in the autumn. Maybe it's dried leaves that have turned into powder after getting grinded by the rollers. No one maintains the slide I assume. But it also can be blood ?
