I always like to hear Grace not having to sing over Marty. This is fine! I like Marty and Grace in a studio so he can be turned down to the proper level cause he does become obnoxious! Love Pure Grace! Raw is good =))
I always like to hear Grace not having to sing over Marty. This is fine! I like Marty and Grace in a studio so he can be turned down to the proper level cause he does become obnoxious! Love Pure Grace!
Really a quite sensuous and compelling version, much different from the Airplane's no-holds-barred sound. But Grace's voice is the anchor of both. I can't imagine anyone else singing it.
@gnortznitz ----Oye, retarded "new" one?--This IS the "OLD" one, as you say. Pre-Jefferson Airplane. Sorry for you that you can't appreciate them both for what each is, man....
I adore every version of this song that Grace did in the 60's. So many different plays with the words. 'All of a sudden in bed you found out where it is.' 'But in bed baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is.' 'But in your head baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is.'
Grace was and remains the best. No doubt about it. In fact, I'm gonna wrap one up now in her honour. And, will ponder yet another interpretation of this killer tune.
first i heared many versions of ,,somebody to love'', but this one is an original with spirit... found later this song on game like battlefield:vietnam
Wow her voice is so much more powerful in this version... from 3:53 is my favourite part! Yeah this version is better! While with White Rabbit I like the JA's version more.
Hehe I wished more teenagers like me listened to this.
67 68 69 kinetic playground chicago il the crowd is great the owners open the doors clark street is full of heads its a hot summer night and grace and the airplane are playing their hearts out what a great trip
It was Jefferson Starship when Grace had her meltdown in 79. She was so hammered that she couldn't carry a tune. She taunted the German audience about world war 2 . She even stuck a finger up some guy's nose to see if it would fit. The band did not break up. They just did an album and tour without her while she was in rehab. Get her autobiography. it's a great read and she is one funny woman
My uncle Peter played bass in the great society, Him and my aunt lived with Grace in Sanfran before the band slip into the Airplane. After the split him and my aunt moved to India now hes an amazing sitar player....look him up Peter Vangelder
@ebut333uoy you know nothing. before singing in jefferson airplane grace slick was the singer of the great society. when she went to jefferson airplane she brought with her songs such as somebody to love and white rabbit. when she played this song with the great society surrealistic pillow was not out and she was not in jefferson airplane
I'm unfortunately just 25 years of age... the greatest music came from this period. How much I would love to see Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin... so many more.. live.
During her musical career, Slick was a member of several rock bands: The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship. Same lady
Interesting, isn'it? I grew in the 80s, so as a child, Jefferson Airplane was unknown to me...but I remember "We build this city.." I got acquainted with JA after watching "The Doors" movie, with Val Kilmer, which led me to "The Doors" european tour, where Slick described a little about the 60s, Manzarek, Morrison and everything. But I find Slick very beautiful in these 60s videos.
Gosh, I can't believe this was from 1965. The Great Society was so ahead of their time. I might actually like this version better than Jefferson Airplane's.
i could listen to Grace Slick's voice alllll day....she was awesome....i know she is still alive, but she said now that she is old, she would never sing again....she now paints....
I think she sung continuously from the 60s to the 80s...(with Jefferson Starship, some solo projects and the song "We build this city...of rock & roll". Amazing, isn'it?
This song scares children, because, while they think it's not normal (because you have to search for love) to become love. In the older days everybody had/was love. I like the song (this version) a lot because of its power. But ist very political and fascistic.
i can't make up my mind ,but i'm playing this one more than the other'( almost subconsciously (dam i had to look up subconsciously in the dictionary )we don't value education enough when we're young ,we're in to much of a hurry.
amo ah grace slickkk soy fanatico de Jefferson Airplane .Aunque esta epoca de Great Society tambien esta buenaa es mi amor platonico grace ,tengo 22 años saludos.CLAUDIO RODRIGUEZ
I like this version more than the Jefferson Airplane version, and I think the same about White Rabbit. Well, really I think The Great Society is better than Jefferson Airplane. Peace brothers & sisters.
Technically, the Airplane was all of the Great Society, BUT I can understand why you'd respond to the spirit of Grace's earlier band. R'n'r is not just about technical ability. However, JA was one of my favorite bands. Still love this however.
GRACE SLICK doesnt think highly of her singing, but she has the personality of someone who you DON'T wanna mess with!!! even at age 68 , she still remembers all the drug connotations in all those childrens books (Alice In Wonderland is just one of them) and still 'defends' them.
i remember hearing this song for the first time when they played a film about drugs in our 9th grade biology class. they shouldn't have done that! i really wanted to turn on!
I remember as a 7 year old cub scout going to see "No Roses For Michael". Guy from the D.E.A lectured on the perils of marijuana, then lit up a dish of pot. (So we could smell it!!?) Got to interval & the local take away shop was suddenly filled with a troop of ravenous boy scouts - My first attack of the munchies! (lol)
not only is GRACE SLICK still alive (She put out her autobiography some years ago) she is 68...but FOR ALL WHO CARE: THE GREAT SOCIETY RECORDINGS ARE AVALIABLE ON A COMP CD I AM NOT KIDDING!!! I HAVE IT!!
I haven't heard this take before. Heard a couple of studio versions of the song by this group which are inferior and are missing the second guitar break.
I think this version brings out the irony of the song far more than the Jefferson Airplane one. I got the impression, too, that Jorma and Jack did not ever much enjoy playing this number.
I like Darby Slick's guitar playing on this - his style is similar to the player in the Peanut Butter Conspiracy whose name I forget.
This is the first and better version of a CLASSIC song. The song has PLENTY of energy and her voice has tremendous power and beauty. Thank you for posting it. :)
Hi 100bigtime100: I think you're right. I just discovered Judy Henske recently by following JA threads. I think Grace Slick must have been influenced by Judy. The timing - late 50s when Grace would have been in her late teens - certainly works.
Incredible! This version is excellent compared to the overplayed JA version. The JA version has been played to mediocrity. This version is raw and original.
O-M-G !!! I thought I would never hear/see Great Society ever again -(Had the "Conspicuous in its Abscence" album back in '67 or so)- let alone be treated to a live clip!!! Thanks & WELL DONE, gkncvs !
I like this, and agree that it is interesting historically. But yeah, the later Airplane version was better. GS had no equivalent to Casady or Kaukonen. Pretty cool, though.
Wow, I hadn't heard this Great Society version in probably a good 15 years. I had an old album which was a kind of Nuggets type album with a bunch of different artists and this version of STL was on it. I hope I can find that album! Anyway, really like this version and Grace sounds great as always doing it.
It's so strange. Grace Slick left the Great Society for Jefferson Airplane, taking Darby Slick's "Somebody to Love" and her own "White Rabbit" with her. So both were originally GS-songs, while now they are the very most famous songs of JA. Seems a bit unfair, doesn't it? Very much like Darby's guitar by the way. This version gives me the shivers, much more than JA's.
I don't say that it's better than the Airplane version. But I'm very happy that I gkncvs posted it...I didn't have the idea from which country and how to get an album from the Great Society. I was very curious how she sang before the Airplane. There's no disappointment: the music is cool, the voice is great! Greace is my favourite female singer!:)
Yeah, I still like JA's better, her voice in that version is, I don't know, more emotional and the arrangement is cooler too. This one, however, still damn rocks.

Wow, I hadn't heard this Great Society version in probably a good 15 years. I had an old album which was a kind of Nuggets type album with a bunch of different artists and this version of STL was on it. I hope I can find that album! Anyway, really like this version and Grace sounds great as always doing it.

I always like this version of STL.
Darby's guitar work is excellent on this recording,
very mid 1960s west coast sound.

Gotta agree, I like it better too.
