  • love this version. so classy.

  • the sexy prince would be proud - r.i.p. marvin - God bless

  • Taxes, death.....and trouble!

  • my inaccurate assumtion

  • I didn't think this was going to be good....I humbly acknowledge my assumption

  • coolest

  • joni forever. god bless her.

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Diane Rovell she still looks lovely and gorgeous what?? doesn't anyone else see the resemblance?

  • Joni Baby !! great version of the MG classic subtle, cool and soulfull

  • Ti amo!!!!!!!!

  • nice arrangement my brain says so. neneh's cover is less subtle, less sophisticated but yet the one which touches my heart.

  • Forget all the rest when it comes to this lady, damn she 's hot!

  • I love her

  • bravissima Joni

  • GODDESS!

  • Handyman: chingate, tu cucharaha

  • @handyman1017 this may not be the greatest mitchell performance but spare us the elitist' i ve been listening to her longer than you' tripe. ok you may have plugged in her mike at woodstock but by your anti jewish crap its clear you werent really listening at all. go to a screwdriver concert it might be more you.

  • @joedgillis I'm assuming that was a (well-earned) joke to h-man....cause she wasn't at woodstock...lol. But, obviously brilliant because she wrote the best Woodstock song there is. (And what's wit the anti-semite anyway).

  • i have to meet Joni Mitchell ... she is in my veins like holy wine :) any clues ?

  • priceless! the scant comping, woman onstage, woman! trouble! this is what it's all about, folks!

  • I love this Woman she is God !

  • Absolutely amazing... What versatility and talent Joni Mitchell has!

  • This is seriously amazing. What is the venue? And is there more?

  • @cooperdogable It's on DVD entitled "Painting with Words & Music...Filmed I believe on the Warner Bros Lot in L.A.--the whole show is great

  • "There's only three things that's for sure: taxes, death, and trouble."

You believe that from Marvin and Joni, don't you?

    I know that I do.

  • What is this from. It is marvelous. The rap at 1:47 is mighty damn fine.

  • I love this rendition of Marvin Gaye's original because I can actually understand the lyrics. Of course Marvin's smooth jazzy soul performance of song makes for a sizzling experience for the listening ear; ooooh yeah

  • she got so excited for a bit there never seen her like that , lovvvvvve it

  • yes, very good, but us she as good as Annie Lennox, as a singer I mean?

  • @chriscroft87 : i would say "yes", possibly better, if you look at the body of her work and listen to her voice over the years, esp. when she was younger. in this clip she is singing this at an age annie lennox has yet to hit (and after smoking camel unfiltereds her whole life). she no longer has the range, but she shows amazing control and that she truly understands singing.

  • @jaiguruomdasji ---See comment to chriscroft87. I hope he/she took your advice and listened to Joni's span of work from the mid-'60s on up. Just gotta say that there's no "possibly" about this comparison. Annie Lennox may be a favorite of millions, but she just ain't in the same league as Joni Mitchell. Very few are. She's an extremely rare original whose gifts and body of work truly amount to genius.

  • @northernmuse9 Fully Agree..she's in a league of her own...like Bob Dylan...she is the female version.....

  • @harhar58

maybe bob is joni's male version... ;-)

  • @chriscroft87 --I can't swear to it or point you to the link, but I'm pretty sure Annie Lennox has named Joni M. as an influence--as have most female pop/rock singers who came after her (and many of her contemporaries also). Annie L is a good singer, but isn't in the same league--as a singer, musician, writer, and influence--as Joni Mitchell. Not even close.

  • @northernmuse9 Well Put.......nobody is in her league...she's the greatest female singer/songwriter in the history of pop music.....Dylan would be the Male Equivalent

  • @harhar58 Why even put the barrier of male vs. female? Joni is just awesome. Period. Her catalogue, her guitar tunings, her originality, her talent.....I'd lay it side to side any day with the likes of Dylan and Neil Young. She puts a lot of other talents considered to be greater (David Crosby comes to mind) to shame.

    Joni is the SHIT.

  • Mark Isham on trumpet?

  • sweet ^^

  • this rassism vote nothing ever would have to do with the work of J. Mitchell. - Go in your cell and keep angry, kill children or whatever ... we're not with you

  • There's no doubt Marvin owns this song BUT I can't see why Joni Mitchell can't have some fun doing this classic. I love her version but then again I love just about everything Mitchell does or did.

  • I would rather spend my time with joni mitchell than with that poor girl britney.

  • You may have a point. But I would rather bang Brittney any day of the week than ever get it on with Joni! Somehow the idea of it makes me want to lose my lunch!

  • @joetube777 same here

  • I played that again: Misress Mitchell is just fine ; she had a very good band including Mister Brecker

  • I'm sorry, but this is a great interpretion. Lady Mitchell at a very good concert. - Thank's for this record hen...

  • are you kidding me ,britney is not even in the same league as joni ,please that is the most ridiculous thing ,britney sucks!joni is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey! Joni is better now than Brittney Spears ever was!

    Joni is fantastic!

  • flat, flat, flat: she can't sing this song; for as much as I thinks she's great

  • @vergeharget

sorry guy/gal:: maybe you should turn on your electronic guitar tuner; or, perhaps, the acoustic tuner one uses when tuning a piano...joni's anything but flat, flat, flat...

evry note is in tune fella/girlfriend!

  • Ladies I'll lsiten again when time lets me but she sounds off off off to me.

She's getting older and losing her in tune chops.

    Itzik Basman

  • Okay I listened again an she's not flat" as in sharp or flat but flat as in dispassionate She puts no life or verve or suffering in "taxes death and troubles". Listen to Marvin gaye singing this: he sings it like he's screaming from his soul. Joni is flat as in tepid compared to what the song is about: it's not a jazz vehicle.

    Itzik Basman

  • @vergeharget

    thx 4ur response. interesting...

i saw that you liked neneh's & alicia 's "takes". I loved both...all so different.

    Consider this:

Re: lyrics, instrumenttation, tempo, style (jazz, r&b, soul, rock, blues,....). The great thing about "music"?It CAN be vastly rsued, unlike any other artistic vehicle. A great gift for artists!. the.freedom and allowance, thereof, to make the song "their own". For the listener? It's just a matter of what sounds/feels good to you.

  • I'm guessing you're 1 lady despite the two names. Anyway I agree with what you just said. Take Cassandra Wilson: she is tremendous at making a song her own. Some singers like Ann Peebles or even Percy Sledge seem to master one song and can't do it again. It's true that mausic is a matter of what sound feels good to you, but once you grant technical competence, I have often wondered if it's possible to say that one subjective response is more right thananother?

    Itzik Basman

  • @vergeharget

    re:subjective response.. i don't believe any1's opinion, re:music, r more "correct" than another's. Who r we to judge?

Have been a joni fan since age 11...hve loved and not loved some of her difft jrneys as musician/singer/cmpsrEx: "Twisted" on "Crt & Sprk" ; tried to like it; but cldn't feel any swing like H,L & Ross. However, joni's come along way w/ jazz (mingus," furry",hancock), has taken so mny risks & they hve pd off. her smoke chops r #1! 4 me, j's got it goin w/jazz

  • Well let me ask you this: if someone were to put Britney Spears side by side with Joni Mitchell-who btw I have a lot of time for--and said Britney's a better singer, my hunch is tht you wouldn't think it was just a matter of taste/. You'd think they were *wrong*. If so there's more to responses to music than just purely subjectivity. There are standards for judgment about such things, I am inclined to think.

    Itzik Basman

  • @vergeharget ..still pretty good for a white girl

  • @bagoona How about she's good?

  • thanks for posting! possibly the only white female voice that could take on this marvin classic...

  • Stop hatting! she gave a stellar performance and thats all that matters and if her performance sucked like some of you are proclaiming you wouldnt be watchin this now... would you?

  • God, I love this woman!

  • @LauriRHCP yes i love her too !!!!

  • when was this bad boy recorded?

  • very very cool

  • I love u joni!!!

  • HEY YOU ROCKET SCIENTISTS - NEWS FLASH!!

Joni Mitchell wrote "Heard it Through the Grapevine" - in this performance she is paying tribute to her departed friend.

  • Actually, Heard it Through The Grapevine was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1966, the single was first recorded by The Miracles.

  • name 10 respected artists that are influenced by joni mitchell. Joan Baez Buffy St. Marie Graham Nash David Crosby Steven Stills Herbie Hancock Wayne Shorter Jaco Pastorius Herbie Hancock Neil Young Allmusic said, "When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century."
  • your crazy.

    you counted herbie hancock twice.

herbie hancock had wayne shorter and jaco pastorious playing for him.

herbie hancock was influenced by Miles Davis; not joni mitchell. joni mitchell got booed at the Isle Of Wight when miles davis performed bitches brew in 1970.

motown alum such as marvin gaye are on another level.

that played out ass folk shit is dead. no one cares except pathetic ass baby boomers that are on the way off the planet.

    whatever.

joni mitchell cant fuck with marvin

  • Herbie Hancock was influenced by a lot of people and making a typo does not make me crazy.

I would recommend that if you have a day job, keep it. Motown is not the only musical genre out there and the U.S. is not the only setting for music.

I really pity you. More likely, you will open your mouth and insult the wrong person someday and get off the planet a lot sooner than me. You are a festering bigot and are as relevant as a pile rotting fish.

BTW... Where is the folk in this video?

  • i see all the way through you and beyond. joni mitchell should never cover marvin gaye. all the veiled threats and petty insults wont change that. i know this much; your punk ass aint gonna take me off the planet. i find it ironic how u attempt to call me a bigot. lol am i a bigot because joni mitchell cant cover marvin gaye? not sure how race plays into that assertion, but who gives a fuck? lol put your fanny pack on and your birkenstocks and jump out of a moving hybrid. LMBAO
  • You'll take yourself off the planet with your ego.

  • i would love to hear rickie lee jones do a version of this...

  • What? She's as much of a legend as Marvin Gaye, So shut it.

  • you are drunk.

thats like comparing kenny g to john coltrane.

name 10 respected artists that are influenced by joni mitchell.

thats why she is singing a marvin gaye song.

she couldnt hold marvin gayes penis in her mouth.

    she probaly tried....

    but i digress.

she cant compare to the original trouble man.

  • Okay, maybe you should look in the list of 500 greatest ever albums, she has more than Gaye. Not to discredit Marvin or anything, he's great, but you're the one who's most likely drunk. I can't even name 10 artists that were influenced by Marvin Gaye, so whoopty fucking doo.

And she isn't trying to compare, it's just that Marvin happens to be dead right now.

  • Maybe you could list 10 people that you've influenced in the music business? How many songs and albums do you have published?

She isn't trying to "compare", she is just doing a song she likes her way.

    I like both versions BTW...

  • sucka please.

I have influenced a generation of artist in a culture that is more relevant and has a greater global impact than joni mitchell.

    its called Hip Hop.

i have 28 albums on Itunes, Amazon, Napster and other fine outlets.

the name is Labtekwon: google me.

beyond that; joni mitchell is nowhere in the same ballpark as Marvin Gaye. she isnt a very good vocalist. the Motown Era alone had a more prolific impact than anything associated with joni mitchells career.

    nice try chump.

  • Try not to sprain your arm while patting yourself on the back - chump.

  • What would Marvin say about you saying "this bitch needs slapping"? What he sang about was doing exactly the opposite. He'd be totally ashamed of you. You're just a dreamer, you're not doing anything with yourself.

  • marvin would probaly slap her himself.

you dont know him, stick to the music.

    loser.

  • You don't know him either you twonk, and it sounds like you haven't even listened to his music.

  • Whatever. There is no possibility of talking to braying asses.

  • actually, i know him better than you do.

my father played with Count Basie and started the careers of Chester Thompson and Dennis Chambers to name a few.

    this is a silly debate.

joni mitchell cant fuck with marvin gaye.

    get a clue.

  • He worked with Chester Thompson and Dennis Chambers....But not Marvin Gaye! You are an idiot. She's not trying to fuck with marvin gaye, she's just singing his song.

    Get a clue, bellend.

  • "Arguing with a fool is like trying to spit on a fish!"

    Nuff Said!

  • Yeah, and I've never heard of you. And what you do is junk compared to Marvin Gaye AND Joni Mitchell.

The only person you've influenced is yourself. Beyond that, you've done fuck all except release trash. "Labtekwon is a cultural enigma and a creative phenomena in the universe of Hip Hop" - Yeah, and I'm Nelson Mandella.

  • fortunately, you are insignificant and your opinion holds no value. lets stay focused: joni mitchell should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever cover marvin gaye. lol she sucks. Marvin was a genius and folks like Alan Thicke still seek to emulate his style. who tries to sound like joni mitchell? shit, even joni mitchell wants to sound like marvin gaye a song he wrote and composed for a Blaxploitation movie at that. she is lame. you are lame. i am unaffected. lol
  • I'm insignificant? I know my boundaries, I'm not trying to make music because it wouldn't be good, wheras you ARE making music and it's not good. You're pretty damn insignificant in the music business, you should just give up now.

You know the film was based on the album? I don't think Marvin really gave a fuck for "Blaxploitation".

She isn't lame. You are lame, and she's sold a damn lot more records than you have.

You are effected and you make it blatantly obvious. Get off of youtube.

  • There were two very significant song writers in the 1960's/1970's and later. Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Both sold a lot more music than they performed. They made more on royalties than they did on their own performances.

After listening to some of a certain individual's "performances" I would prefer to listen to someone dragging a dead cat over a violin.

BTW...I have heard both rap and Hip-hop based on Joni Mitchell songs. I guess every public forum has to have its gadflies.

  • @labtekwonder

pardon ? what did you say your name was - perhaps i missed it ! ohhhhhh - you're so famous I have to google you to know who you are - wow !

  • @labtekwonder

28 albums !!!!!! Thats fantastic - thats more than Beethoven !!!! It's more than......................just about everyone.....and I bet everyone of them is a masterpiece!!!

  • She gave it a nice try but it doesn't have the weight, the drama or the impact of the original.

  • KBoogs719 , you fucking asshole . She is a godess. This song is incredible. She is the only one who can sing this song as Marvin Gaye. absolutely INCREDIBLE !!!!!

  • She sang this song with some others at a

festival, and it energized her to do the CD of

"Both Sides Now" with the orchestra.

I saw her when she toured with the album.

First half was the CD,then she did some old things with the orchestra, including "Judgment of the moon and stars".This one is available on DVD for the whole concert. Her paintings are on the walls.

  • Where is she from? I hear an accent.

  • She's from Saskatchewan, Canada.

  • 1:58 She broke it down......

  • Brilliant! Somewhere Marvin is smiling.

  • The Icon, Living Legend, A light in the dark, Joni Mitchell. As great as she always has been. Thanks for posting!

  • Damn, she was still beautiful even here!

  • Superbe!

  • what a blast! Awesome version of an awesome cut! Joni, you're a gem!

  • One of the best performances and videos I've ever seen...too bad You Tube won't let me post it...'I post too much?' SAY WHAT?

  • All things considered, this deserves a huge wowzvilllzzz. Beautiful post...

  • No one does it like Marvin, but Joni is epic in her own way.

  • Yeah, Brian Blade is on the drums layin' it down.

  • trouble man DON'T get in my way.

she sings this as good as Marvin

  • is that Brian Blade on drums?

  • great!!!!

  • fantastic!!!!

  • Brava! Bravo! Exemplary!!

  • WoW, what a great find! Thank you henhenstoll!

One of my all-time favorite tunes, by one of my all-time favorite singers! Great....

  • Wow. She sings that like she knows what its like.

  • I am one of the big fans of this song, having bought the original 45 by Marvin back in 1972...it's arguably my favorite song by him and I love this version too!

  • Is that larry K on bass? I play bass and appreciate his playing very much...oh...and Joni's music too

  • She looks so lonely without her guitar, till she starts singing--wow!--how cool and intense all at the samne time. She and Marvin Gaye are a good fit, both intense performers who have known trials and trouble in their lives.

Hehhenstoll if you know, where and when was the performance. Do you know who the back up musicians are?

  • This is one of the coolest songs ever. Ironic that it was written for one of the WORST movies ever!

  • Yesssss! One singer! Love this song, and Joni CAN sing it: Great timing and voice!

  • I'm pretty sure that's Brian Blade on drums...

  • yes you are right he´s brian blade

  • she's the best ever and she's Canadian...we're proud of you Joni!

  • damn. marvin's ashes just came together and clapped.

  • Now I can die. I have heard God.

  • BRAVO! Joni el amor de mi vida!

  • she's feelin it!

  • damn this is good. like really good.

  • WOW !amazing cover only she could touch it like this ...love her and Marvin !!

  • Trouble Man: I found myself applauding at the end of JM´s performance (which I can only see on an itsy bitsy screen). Thanks for putting this on YouTube!

  • probably the only person in the world that could do the song justice. great video, thanks.

  • NAJDOBRATA!!

  • gon yer sell good job

  • wow... I saw the title and said...MARRRRRVIN?

    killer backup also

  • te amo
