It's just weird and i feel sorry to see someone acting like that. Especially a very well known chef who is supposed to taste food from different cultures etc.
That's pretty rude. I like bread-cheese and karjalanpiirakka. Mämmi on the other hand, is disgusting and even in Finland only the old people eat it because they have eaten it sense they were little and it was war and not much to eat... But it's horrible.

It's the same with most other things too. For some reason, they always insist on showing the weirdest sides of Finnish society. Mämmi, wife carrying, phone tossing, salmiakki, munamies and so on. None of these things have any relevance to the average Finn, salmiakki excluded (but that's an acquired taste if there ever was one).

Have you ever seen Gordon like anything that has been pre-made in large factories and then frosen and heated in the microwave? All of those foods are excellent when you made them yourself from start. Most of those are really time consuming to prepare, and bread-cheese for example needs to be done from the really fatty milk of a cow that has just calved. This is really only available in farms.
This is NOT what people eat in finland... we eat the same food here as people do in other european countries and america... this is traditional food that i personally don't like either...
Nothing wrong with "mämmi" - the problem is it *looks* really bad (and the texture is slimy), but the taste is actually quite manageable (yet boring). It's never been a big hit with other than older people. It's basically porridge, I think?
Bread cheese is good with the berries... But I dont care for "mämmi" that much myself.... Not many young people care for blue cheese either when first tasted but some tastes grow on you with time...
He's damn rude, I have to admit that some traditional food... leaves a lot to be desired, but the way he deals with the situation is just disrespectful and he should be ashamed to be from the UK. I'd suggest taking away his passport but then he wouldn't be able to leave...
Mr. Ramsay is so right about this. I am Finnish myself but hate traditional Finnish food. Everything from cooked potatoes and rye bread to porridges and "mämmi" (the baby shit). Thank God today they import food even to Finland and we have larger selection of products available than what northern nature produces.

@Samoutuomas I'm maybe suffering from serious cooked potato overdose, because in my childhood food was almost every bloody day cooked potatoes + meat or fish with few slices of tomato and cucumber. Now I almost never eat potatoes in any form. A little amount goes in a very spicy curry maybe or as french fries that are sufficiently soaked in olive oil.
@TheSetri Oh, well that makes sense. For me it has always been this "special" food you only eat 1-4 times a year every Summer. I can honestly think of nothing better than those small, sweet and fresh cooked potatoes mashed in some butter with your fork, and a marinated beef-steak or lambchop :) And maybe add some sweet peas and cooked salmon. Then we have some bacon-slices wrapped around blue cheese and mushrooms, so good :')
Regular potatoes taste like dry and floury crap afterwards.

There are plenty of good traditional dishes to choose from but they always choose to go with mämmi. Why would you do that?
It's the same with most other things too. For some reason, they always insist on showing the weirdest sides of Finnish society. Mämmi, wife carrying, phone tossing, salmiakki, munamies and so on. None of these things have any relevance to the average Finn, salmiakki excluded (but that's an acquired taste if there ever was one).
It's absurd is what it is.

Well, obviously they gave him the worst dishes ever. I hate eveything they gave to Gordon. Just can't eat any of them. But after this Gordon has visited Lappland and He liked everything He ate.There is just no point giving Gordon the best we have to give. Finnish food is a crossover between scandinavian and russian food due to our history. Have you ever seen Gordon like anything that has been pre-made in large factories and then frosen and heated in the microwave? All of those foods are excellent when you made them yourself from start. Most of those are really time consuming to prepare, and bread-cheese for example needs to be done from the really fatty milk of a cow that has just calved. This is really only available in farms.

Nothing wrong with "mämmi" - the problem is it *looks* really bad (and the texture is slimy), but the taste is actually quite manageable (yet boring). It's never been a big hit with other than older people. It's basically porridge, I think?

Mr. Ramsay is so right about this. I am Finnish myself but hate traditional Finnish food. Everything from cooked potatoes and rye bread to porridges and "mämmi" (the baby shit). Thank God today they import food even to Finland and we have larger selection of products available than what northern nature produces.

@Samoutuomas I'm maybe suffering from serious cooked potato overdose, because in my childhood food was almost every bloody day cooked potatoes + meat or fish with few slices of tomato and cucumber. Now I almost never eat potatoes in any form. A little amount goes in a very spicy curry maybe or as french fries that are sufficiently soaked in olive oil.

@TheSetri Oh, well that makes sense. For me it has always been this "special" food you only eat 1-4 times a year every Summer. I can honestly think of nothing better than those small, sweet and fresh cooked potatoes mashed in some butter with your fork, and a marinated beef-steak or lambchop :) And maybe add some sweet peas and cooked salmon. Then we have some bacon-slices wrapped around blue cheese and mushrooms, so good :')
Regular potatoes taste like dry and floury crap afterwards.
