@Redondo Why are you even comparing Baxter to Johnstone? One was a defender & one was a winger. If you're going to compare Johnstone to anyone it should be Cooper, both played on the wing & both were brilliant dribblers, which one was better is completely based on opinion. Even though we might support different teams & we might dislike each other supporters/players, we should have appreciation for the kind of player Scotland once produced,.
@Redondo Jock Stein would perhaps have disagreed with you, given the choice of both Henderson and Johnstone, Stein in his time as Scotland manager more often elected to choose the Rangers winger over Jinky, due to his more forward attacking like skill, whereas Jinx would want to beat a player two or three times, Henderson was happy to beat him once.
So many great players though that to choose the absolute best would be impossible.
He only played about a dozen top quality games for SAFC, but when he did perform , it was like watching Da Vinci paint and Mozart play at the same time - you knew you were in the presence of something very special. Although English, my fondest memory of Jim is of him playing keepie-uppie in front of the Royal Box at Wembley in 1967. The late Alan Ball (no mean player) was trying to dispossess him, and apparently Slim Jim kept calling him Jimmy Clitheroe, after the squeaky-voiced comedian.
@bocher222 the differance between jinky an baxter was that jinky would work hard at improving his game ie: dribbling tennis balls thro empty milk bottles etc, baxter was the total opposite he hated training an did as little as possible, but on the pitch he was untouchable and unmatched save for a very talented brazilian. jinkys talent was undoubtable but hard earnd, baxter's was god given !! he is without doubt the greatest
To be honest, and I'm a Celtic fan at heart... Baxter was my kind of player. Every ones going on about Jimmy Johnstone, but from what I've seen he just looked too small to really get away from his man the way Best and Matthews did, fine player though he undoubtedly was. I hope I don't get hatemail from Celtic fans... all one can ever say is what one sees. On the other hand, Baxters tragedy was that bloody broken leg, so Sunderland and Nottingham Forest never saw him really shine.
I am sure Jim was marvellous, but surely if his defensive abilities were as poor as suggested, he should have been a withdrawn inside left as opposed to a left half? Just asking.
Because you put "FACT" at the end of your comment doesn't make it a fact. Jim Baxter and Jimmy Johnstone were both amazing players, but there is no way you can compare the two, different positions and different styles.
I'm not a Jock but surely Denis Law--leading scorer alongside "fatass" Dalglish(twice as many games to reach DL total) and European Player of Year 1964--is all-time greatest Scot.
I remember my cousin telling me, after a Sunderland game vs forest in '67, the Sunderland fans had all been chanting 'Baxter 3, England 2' in honour of his performance in that match. He was a huge favourite at Sunderland.
He was a brilliant player and the fact he could take Celtic apart at the time when they were the dominant force in world football is sheerly incredible
I am a Celtic supporter and regardless of my team, I know Jim was a top player. He reminds me of Robert Prosinecki. Similar style, we as supporters of clubs like Celtic and Rangers should appreciate such player as we have nothing like this today for BOTH teams
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
has willie henderson ever won the european cup with rangers? has willie henderson ever been in a rangers team that won 9 championships in a row?i believe the answer to those questions would be no. wee jinky johnstone of the celtic did i believe so please shhhhh, lol.god bless wee jinky and the hoops
baxter this baxter that, aye am sure we was a great player for them, oh i mean rangers.aye ok baxter did take the piss out of england at wembley with his keepie ups, but jimmy johnstone of the celtic did take the piss out of everybody that tried to take the ball of him, including a certain rangers defender called proven.wee jinky beats them all, 9 in a row a european cup so shhhh, rangers lol
Jimmiy Johnstone wasnt even as good as his counterpart Willie Henderson, The man you lot idolise so much Jock Stein also thought so, after all he chose Henderson ahead of Jinky to play for Scotland :-D
It's not Greensleeves, my friend, and I had to check out what it was myself! It is a tune used in the Eurovision in the 60's called l'amour est blue. You'll find it on youtube, the composer is a guy called Paul Marriat or something. But it truly clicks in the languid dribbling. That's why I've just gone back to it now! Hope this is of help to you.
interms of skill then the man in the video above is rangers best ever player slim jim i heard he was better than zidan and is rated by many including fergie as the best player to come out of scotland.
sends a shiver down your spine. reminds you of days when Scotland had the greatest player and players in the World. The lion Rampant roared, and Rangers played a sublime brand of football
and then came the Stein era ..... The Lisbon lions were said to have whooped it up when they heard the news of Baxters transfer from Rangers to Sunderland ...One man caused the great lions so much worry !!!
Had Baxter not broke his leg it may have made the difference against AC Milan in the 1/4 final of the Euro cup, Rangers narrowly lost out 3-2 on aggregage.
the difference is john greig played for rangers for his whole career and captained rangers for many years. Including to a European Cup victory in 72. and a treble, to break celtics dominance of the domestic game, he gave blood sweat and tears for the cause and would do anything to defeat the opposition
baxter maybe had more natural talent but greig's determination and grit will never be matched. baxter let himself down with his off field antics and possibly underachieved whereas greig gave his all every single game. in my opinion that makes him more of a ranger regardless of ability.
something about the way baxter plays relaxes me, everything he does seems so effortless and natural, amazing.
it is judged on ablity when it comes to picking say the best man utd player ever guys who saw the busby babes judge on ablity and chose duncan edwards with george best not to far behind interms of ablity.
Sorry, someone had already posted answer earlier - and yet, it just sounds better (particularly 1.13 to 1.21), with this video... as though the music was written for the man! Brilliant!
baxter was great him like duncan edwards and john charles are very underrated by anyone who never saw them even alex jeffrey another great player the rooney of his day.
watching the clips in this game proves to me that players back then would have no problems playing today even with the fittness back then yes of course in order to keep up with the game they would need to be abit fitter but interms of skill jim shows that he can show just as much skill and impact on a match as any player playing today.
the player above are not in there class the only diffrence is there fittness levels.yes van basten ect would hav ebeen worldclass in any era any player who has ever been worldclass would be in any era but none of the players you said can lace edwards boots ask anyone who saw edwards.
a legend it is a shame when you here players held in higer astem than players like john charles, jim baxter, duncan edwards yet players like hurst, souness, king kenny, ronaldinho, bagio, van basten great players yes but player who are not fit to lace the boots of john, duncan and jims boots.
Came to Forest for 100 grand, saw him against Leeds I think it was his debut, did not much at all at all and became known as Whisky Jim, his slim brilliant days over. But as this video shows for a time he was a football great!
