  • thank u patrick. i was having trouble and u helped alot. thanks

  • Thanks for the video. I was really stumped with this equation in my mathbook. The answer key only tells you so much. Working through it is priceless.

  • @venero9 yep, always a few steps left out in the answer keys. always nice to see someone go through it all!

  • I actually set-up the formal for this equation correctly: like the way you show it at the bottom of your page @ 4:24.

I didn’t have any REAL IDEA as to how to go about solving it though.

Is there a name for this type of equation (kind of like there are names for polynomials, or quadratics)? I need to look up similar equations (not necessarily WORD PROBLEMS) to practice. Thanks

  • okay im not saying this to brag lets clear that up. im in advanced math classes by like 2-3 years. and im probably the average guy in my advanced class. and even the smarter people of the class get stuck on word problems. schools dont focus on word problems that have to do with this kind of stuff enough. in pre algebra there were the simplest word problems ever. and in algebra 1 they get like 10 times as hard.

  • Thanks Patrick, I would be lost without your help.

  • @sskdb : )

  • k so i read the example and tried it myself and thought the time was 5 hours.

  • Ahhhhhhhhh I have a head ache

  • i have a test tomorrow on this.AND I DONT HAVE NOTES. SO... thanks! >3

  • This totally cleared my misunderstanding... Thanks!!

  • If I would have seen this before my final and known that d=rt could also be used as t=r/d I would have gotten a problem right on my final... shoulda watched this earlier.

  • THANK YOU BASED PATRICK. I just aced my test consisting of nothing but brutal and vague word problems.

  • WHEW.

  • BLINK!!!!

  • i didn't know whre that was going; you are good

  • You make it look soooo easy man im struggling with world problems like no other thing in the world

  • @iranianboy123 they are tricky since they are not mechanical. they always take a bit of time to sort out.

  • Great lesson thanks!...only recommendation would be links to some similar practice questions :)

  • Thank you so much for posting this video this is so helpful :) You're amazing!

  • 36 the sum of the tens and ones 4 digits is 4 more than the tens digit. what is the number.? can you solve it for me???

  • very helpful. thanks!

  • all i ca say is wtf?

  • Thank You. Whenever I watch your videos, you always drive the point home! =D

  • Wow this was so helpful, my Algebra 2 teacher isn't very clear when teaching so it's nice to be able to rewind here. She also skips steps very often and it's confusing. Thanks a lot.

  • This helped a lot. My math teacher is an idiot and hasn't taught us anything all year. Thanks a ton.

  • Just reviewing what i forgot last year :)

  • God dam all that work and you just end up with 2!!! LOL!, i kinda understand this now xD

  • what if you don't know the rate but are given time and distance. For example, what if a boat travels 36 miles downstream in 3 hours and returns upstream in 6 hours. What is the rate of the stream? Please email me the proper formula as I have a final tomorrow!

  • what if you are only given the time there and the time back and the distance but not the rate....how do you solve the rate?

E.G. the boat travels 36mi in 3 hours downstream and returns in 6 hours upstream. What is the rate of the stream?

  • where is the mixture problems????? well my cst is tommrow so yeah well thanks for the quadriatic formula problems thats going 2 help lots

  • This is a fantastic breakdown - thank you. I'm trying to reteach myself how to do basic algebra after 10 years away and it's amazing how much harder it is than I remember - especially without having a teacher. This video was a huge help.

  • Thank you Pat. Yes, a more simplified version of D=R.T for those of us with brains that have slow memory.

  • this a tricky one...

  • which is the best way to learn this stuff?

  • thanks! you helped me alot for my exam.

  • omg this is confusing. is there any faster way to solve this problem

  • @MarinesUSMCMarines

when are you taking the asvab?

  • @dontdodrugs666 june 28. why u ask?

  • Great job, all the steps were necessary. Many thanks.

  • is there an easier way to do this?

  • @sinevesterdeus Cheat.

  • thanks for the help but i know a way simpler way

    this one is mad complicated

  • and u hav nice handwriting 4 a guy.

  • u r really smart.

    :)

  • That was fun to watch. D=r(t) is one of my favs.

  • thanks a lot ^^

  • good video can you do one on

    :

sara left kootenay national park @ 08:00 and drove towards vancouver at 85km/hr Allan left the park an hour later and drove along the same route at 100km/hr , what time did allan overtake sara?

    PLEASE HELP!!

  • thank you this helped me figure out these problems

  • thanks man, that retard gwg5640 is a queer. video was crystal clear. again thanks a lot!

  • Thanks !!

  • I understand what you are doing. But you are not explaining how to break down equation specifically enough--in the early stages.

  • you cant please everyone all of the time

  • @patrickJMT ok in the equation what if they added seconds, for the time?

  • perhaps you can post a video where everything is broken down specifically enough

  • hey thanks alot man, it's such a helpful video

  • Dang, couldn't get anything out of this vid. I'm able to comprehend many things that get thrown at me mathwise so far. However, when I hit word problems, my mind straight BLANKS.

  • @DB5tothehive Completely agree with everything you said!

  • I appreciate this video very much; it is done quite well and also it is explained well. This is a kind of problem if you mess up one step, your done, and you make it easy. Thanks! Algebra 1 student

  • could you help me with this problem?? I tried using your method and i didn't get the right answer.

A truck travels 350 km to a delivery point, unloads, and, now empty, returns to the starting point at a speed 8.00 km/h greater than on the outward trip. what was the speed of the outward trip if the total round-trip driving time was 14.4 h?

  • thank you so much. i'm a college student teaching myself algebra, and it is amazing how stupid i feel reading explanations from a textbook. your videos help very much.

  • learning to read a math textbook is a fine art i think; i had to get used to them as well.

however, KEEP READING! in my opinion, it is one of the single best things i did.

i mean, in what class beside math (the hard one) would someone not read the book (duh); but i think tons of people do not (most in fact).

  • did u take the math compass test??

  • thank you so much for expalining this.

  • I Dun get the part when u wrote 5(10-c) (10+c) is 5 (100-c2) not 100 - 90c - c2?like how come?

  • "but hey the speed of this river or current is 2 miles per hour"

  • Great vid! Easy to understand

  • I think I understand it.

  • That's a nice twist on a d=rt problem. Great explanation too.

  • thanks gb!

  • I'm a straight A student whose doing multivariable calculus and I still can't do any of these types of problems. Thanks for clearing it up!
