I'd use the more natural "uh" pronunciation myself--"ay" for the article adds unusual emphasis ("He found A book in the cubbyhole, but not THE book the teacher asked for.")
hmmm, our consultant says it is short u sound, where did you find the 'official pronunciation'? Webster say long a as an article, short u as a preposition..not refuting you just need evidence to present my case :)
@rtz55 That would be correct. I really took some time to think this out and I ended up with the conclusion that it may be confusing for beginning readers and young learners to learn the word "a" with two different sounds. I think that it would be more effective focus on and to teach the article "a" with the long /a/ sound with this song/video, then go on with an extension activity to teach the word "a" as a preposition with the short vowel /u/ sound. Thanks for your comment and research.
@rtz55 The correct way to pronounce the word "a" is to sound it out as the long vowel letter "a". Many people pronounce the word "a" as a short vowel "u" sound, however, the official pronunciation sounds like the long vowel "a". Thanks for the comment!
