Very interesting road. I would like to drive this street and I think one day I'll come to Romania to visit this beautiful country. Here on YouTube I saw a lot of beautiful landscapes of Romania.
but Romanian touristboard use name Transfagarasan highway. It do not mean that the road really is Highway, they just call it that way.. You understand what I mean?
Maybe since it goes over a mountain that is "high", it's called a "highway". Makes much more sense than driving on a "park way" or parking in a "drive way", doesn't it?
@marijuanamata highway does not mean autostrada (motorway). A highway is a public road connecting two or more important destinations. Hence any "national road" is a highway. Every motorway is a highway, but not every highway has to be a motorway.

Too bad you cut the most difficult part, the south forest. The visibility is excellent at every corner and most turns can be taken at more than 80 km per hour even in a family car. The feeling is extreme and I recommend you DON'T bring a passenger along for the ride. Descending on the north side I was stuck at the back of a Tuareg for 20 minutes. He used the brakes at every corner while I was coasting behind him with my engine off :)) Best sunday-driver road in the world. Thank you Ceaucescu!
probably not more then 70-80 kph in the fast straits( a van is overtaking him at one moment...and also he could'n(or want) to overtake a dacia logan..which have like 85-90 hp..aka...a rly slow car..!, the conclusion is..he was really driving real slow...probably cruising speed.
This is timelapse video, camera take a 1shot per second and make it a normal movie 25 frame per second. So I had to drive quite slow in the curves 25-35km/ h and also in the straight part of the road 50km/h.
When I notice that someone catch me up, I turn side of the road, but I didn't notice where that van come :-)
i hope u drived rly slowly(and carefully) on the south side..., because...as u probably noticed.., the asphalt is rly-rly bad untill Vidraru dam and a bit after(Arges county has the worst roads in Romania); and also...most of the drivers(90% of them), me included, have an agresive driving style, which can be a little scarry for foreigners(if u came in our capital city u know what i mean);
then again..if u visited only the center of the country...cities like sibiu-hermannstadt, brasov-kronstatd, sighisoara-schassburg, tg, mures-marktstadt or cluj-klausenburg....it's v posible that ur opinion about our country and about it's inhabitants to be a good one :)):D
but i don't blame u...., eaven us..., the ones below the carpatic arc, we rly-rly like the transilvania region more then the rest of the country..:P
well, I don't know what regions are Oltenia or Muntenia, but maybe next time ;-))
We planned to drive around your country, but hire a car from city A (brasov) and leave it to city B (Constanta) wasn't possible, so we had to plan little shorter two week trip using also a train and busses.
BTW: Take a bus from Constanta to Bucarest is good choice compare to train trip.
Transfagarasan is a great experience but it's not quite a highway. I for one don't like very much highways because they make me sleepy and Transfagaran makes me anything but sleepy.
