  • awesome

  • This is a great video. I love watching Joe Cocker move around in that awkward way that only he has. The organist is STONED but he's not missing a note. Great music. I think that's Russell playing the Organ

  • @Belinda204 Belinda, I believe Leon's banging the piano. This is his arrangement of this old Box Tops song.

  • Scientist, please hurry up with the time machine!!! I want to go back to the best party times of all times!!! Best music, best concerts, everything. We are just still living the hangover from late 60s-early 70s. The world just went down hills since then. Nostalgia.

  • no concerts like this anymore.

  • The man !

  • isn't that leon russell on piano?

  • Comment removed

  • @johnhrey52 - yes it is.

  • That was dynamite.

  • Leon!!!

  • Oops .... Way COOL !!!

  • Why COOL !!

  • This is amazing and took place at the MAD DOGS & ENGLISHMEN Concert, as the descriptive title says. It was a year after Woodstock. Both concerts were fantastic. I love Joe Cocker's latest album too, Hard Knocks...it almost all new songs, except for one cover. It's awesome!

  • Love the counterpoise synergy between steaming Joe & ice cool Leon - both of them one synapse away from imploding - & @ 1.29 Leon smokes a cigarette or something similar in 8 seconds flat ! Sheer genius.

  • @ReedBender1 that's because the normal laws of physics do not apply the the Master of Space and Time.

  • Ron Weasley's dad on sax

  • @corkysherwood : Bobby Keys on sax.

  • Супер!

  • That's playing for keeps.

  • Perfect reason to support arts in school...Think of the talent!

  • @curtb47 This has exactly jack shit to do with school. This has everything to do with padsion love, not intellect.

  • gotta love the backing singers in this too, priceless

  • @BlissVox5 I totally agree!

  • woodstock (dummy)!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @SouthcoastContractor Who's the dummy?Woodstock wasn't in 1970 or inside!!

  • Dang - the sax player looks kind of like Bill Clinton.

  • where is this video performed at, does anyone know?

  • @drohegda 27. and 28.3.1970 Fillmore East, New York City

    Greetings

    Michael

  • @drohegda WOODSTOCK, where else.

  • @fatbee65 woodstock was out doors and there are a few hundred thousand people missing from this video if it was.

  • <3 Leon

  • Man..this is RAW talent... No package, primped, processed, phoney, synthezied, and attitude-ized. Sorry but that's what alot of music is today. Granted, musically its not rocket science, but at least is spontaneous and not a self indulgent me-fest.

  • named our son Leon (he's 2).

  • @turnersnake Wonderful choice!!

  • @judecreek2 thanks

  • Leon Russell. Definition of COOL.

  • Absolutely Fantastic. Thanks, so much, for posting. Really takes me back.

  • The most stoned people in this video:

    1. Leon Russell

    2. Joe

    3. The fast dancin chick in the white shirt

  • This is awesome!!

  • This is brilliantly golden.......

  • Looks like a show i went to at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY......Just some of the greatest stuff ever....

  • That pianist is on a different planet LOL

  • Looks like hygiene lost that day...

  • Oh God, please zap me back to the early 70's & I promise I will appreciate it more.

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • YES IT IS AWESOMELY INCREDIBLE....HMMM

  • The face of Leon is just awesome xD

  • check the 2:09 mark when Leon realizes he's on stage...

    Brilliant

I love this version of the song!

  • Gov't Mule will be playing the Mad Dogs & Englishmen album in its entirety on New Year's Eve at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Should be a killer show!

  • @DEADHEAD712 ummmmmhhhhmmmm smoke on the city

  • JESUS! That was a freakin' GREAT show! WOW! I've heard this song all my life and this is the first time I see it with my own two eyes. POWERFUL performance. 5 stars all day long!

  • I knew this song in 2003 with an A-Teens cover, but this is 100% better than that cover :)

  • GREAT!

  • People will be hearing and seeing this concert fifty 50 years from now and still will dance to it.....Beautiful!!

  • I was "there" too .... I'm 61 ....Joe Cocker was THEE lead performer ....

  • This version blows the Box Tops rendition away. Joe put some Rock n Roll muscle into it.

  • Jim Price (trumpet at 0:55) re-launched Cocker's career. Jim was at a party and Billy Preston called him over to listen to a song he was working on. Jim took song to Joe & convinced him to record it (Jim producing). Initially Joe didn't think song was his style. Jim also convinced him to keep the ending voice crack .. a "signature" to "U Are So Beautiful." Cocker now associated w/one of most beautiful love songs ever. Jim Price has toured w/Rolling Stones and produced for many top artists.

  • esto es musica y fusión

  • Comment removed

  • dissapointing compared to box tops...

  • Got to love Joe, the only person that I ever saw in concert that could literately push their voice past the breaking point and sound even better than before!

  • Boy from Sheffield. Very weird!

  • bobby keys....KEEF'S BUDDY...BEST BUD....HAHAHA....

fuck you mich...bobby's in the band in 2012...dont fuck wit keef

    bobby stays my nigga

  • Bobby Keys!!

  • Leon could play this in his sleep!!! That has to be one of the coolest piano players in rock history!!!!!!!!

  • Mad Dog English Dog, ROCKS, ALWAYS LOOKED LIKE WAS HAVING A SEIZURE, BADASSSSSSSS!!!,,,,,

  • russell looked super stoned.

  • Which was the one in which Joe ended up on the floor with his back arched performing a spastic having an epileptic fit? People here where I live claim that the singer with the most expressive moves was Frank Sinatra. I just know that nobody can beat that performance of Cocker. Expressive would be an understatement!!

  • 1:22 shear fun

  • I love how different Cocker's version is from The Box Tops and the fact that they are both brilliant songs. If you didn't listen to the words you wouldn't even know they were the same song.

  • I thought I couldn't love this song any more, then I found this video.

  • briing back the 1970's!!!!!!!!!

  • @ef9434 The Occupy Protesters are trying!

  • drinking and drug use is a monster!

  • god i wish i lived in the 60's / 70's :[

  • @waltermcbobom But then you wouldn't get to brag about listening to non-mainstream music on youtube

  • powerful

  • Veo las caras del público, de las chicas del coro en especial la pavita del sueter amarillo, con esa expresión de alegria y me hace sentir nostalgia, por esos tiempos, aunque era un niño siempre escuche esas canciones por la radio.

  • choir ahs

  • I dont know on what WORLD the pianist is tripping, but on that world they know like fucking hell to play the piano.

  • @VodenA Leon Russell Tulsa Oklahoma

  • gimme a ticket..and he did!

  • Keys player: Trippin' BALLZ!!!!

    Disappearing smoke at 1:27

  • @allegoryoffolly That keys player is Leon Russell, The Master of Space and Time. The normal laws of nature do not apply.

  • @judecreek2 Plus he had Chris Stainton backing him up on keyboards, when LR was playing guitar. Probably the GREATEST (and craziest) group of "Rock & Soul" musicians and singers to have ever been put on tour together, PERIOD! Still a timeless album; and just as it said in the liner notes: "All elements of the "Truth" are included here." !!

  • Grandes musicos y gran estilo de cocker ¡¡¡

  • @judecreek2 thats stones sax player bobby keys

  • @judecreek2

I think Leon is baked to a delicate crunch here but is still masterful on the piano.....as usual.

  • @aprilwino Oh yeah. The long stare and the sloooow blink kinda give him away, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

  • @judecreek2 au contrare mon ami - his precision is what makes it sound effortless

  • The music of today..... I hang my head in sorrow for the kids that missed this era. Thank goodness for recordings.

  • it won't happen again for another 25yrs....this is where it was at

  • john bulushi had him down pat

  • uh god i looooooooooooooooove Joe cocker <3 <3 <3

  • Check out Joe's woodstock performance ( the whole set) with the Grease band. It kills this. After the mad dogs tour Joe was never the same, too worn out & disillusioned. Thank god he came back!

  • @cocksucker392, Im sure youre a 600 lb mongoloid who lives in front of a computer!JOE has million sellers in the 60s, 70s 80s 90s and the 10s, Leons career as a ''rock star lasted about 8 years!! Compare over 50 million records sold [JOE] to 12 million [LEON} I saw Leon w/ elton john in 12/10, when elton saved his ass from losing his home!Leon did a great performance tho he could barelywalk.READ some of the other comments on DICKHEAD!!!

  • YES Leon ran the show, because Joe was burned out from 18 months of solid touring, Leon used this tour for his own benefit, but Joe said in a recent interview; that he still is in touch w/ Leon and that '' thats the the way the music bussiness works!! And he has learned to let shit go and move on!! But he has turned down many requests for a MD&E reunion ,one from Leon!

  • @stalkingwolf1954 ,,,,

YES , Leon ran the show, BECAUSE Joe had an IDIOT for a manager, Leon did NOT do it for his own benifit , He SAVED Joes ASS !!

You must be a Total DUMBASS !!!

& if Joe turned a reunion down , then it was probably because he couldnt measure up to Leon`s Standards , nothing to be ashamed of though ......................

  • @FIRECRACKER392 Listen, I was there, and believe me, people came to see Joe Cocker, not Leon Russell. Leon Russell used Mad Dogs to spring his own solo career at the expense of Joe. Leon was an important element of the tour for sure, but it wasn't "Leon Russell Mad Dogs & Englishmen". Cocker, continues to perform at a pretty high level, and has sold millions more albums than Leon. He also outdraws Leon at the gate. So who's the real star? This tour was bad for Joe & good for Leon.

  • @tonycapt1 Less than 2 months B4 the tour Denny Cordell & Joe Cocker showed up at Leon's house & asked him to put the tour together. Leon Hired the band, assembled the "choir", arranged all the songs, played piano and guitar, while Joe sang. Of course it was good for Leon. He did most of the work. But nobody made any money. They all went home with nothing but major hangovers and good memories.

  • @tonycapt1 Look, I'm not putting down Joe at all. I've been a fan since I saw Mad Dogs in 1970. Joe WAS the star, but many other people shined, too. Leon, Rita, Claudia, Jim Price, hell, even Emily rocked out on Honky Tonk Women. There is enough talent and credit to go around.

  • @judecreek2 It was a long time ago [almost 42 years ago]. Glad Joe and Leon are still touring and making music well into their late sixties. The are rock icons and mad dogs in my humble opinion was the greatest live album and most exciting tour ever, and it will never be repeated. As Leon said, "Just 40 friends in the name of Cocker Power. Great memories.

  • @tonycapt1 Exactly. I agree completely. Mad Dogs was the best concert I've ever seen, and I've been to many many of them over the last 42 years. It was the first one I saw, and the most memorable!

  • READ MY LIPS:: I do NOT care if Joe and Leon do not get along, and didnt during this tour.I love both of them.Leon made some great music as well as Joe,and I have sets from both great artists. So there,..heehee.

  • Got to love Joe Cocker !!

  • I just do love me these spastic robot moves...!

  • @ONeirda do you mean his John Belushi imitation?

  • ...cool...

  • Joe was the STAR, and Leon tried to steal his thunder during the tour, and he knows it. They all came to see Joe Cocker not Leon Russell. The tour was "JOE COCKER MAD DOGS & ENGLISMEN! Leon was part of the band and was director of sorts, but I saw that show, and believe me, Joe was the main attraction. Joe made no money on this tour, because he had to feed and house Leon's 40 person entourage. All designed to elevate Leon's status, as Joe became disgusted with the whole circus atmosphere.

  • His whole band was at first Dalney and Bonnie's band , all but Leon. Heard alot about how Leon treated Joe like shit the whole tour. Joe won't talk about even today. Jim Gordon on drums one of the best back in the day, now doing life in prison for killing his mother.

  • the best @piano

  • Leon Russell is one cool cat....

  • I saw this version of his band at East Town theater in Detroit. I have to admit I was more impressed with Mountain who was the opening act (along with Maggie Bell and Stone the Crows).

  • That's Nicole (Nickey) Barclay at 1:01 singing back up on the Mad Dogs tour. She went on to play in the rock group Fanny for 5 years then on to a solo career.

  • me recuerda tanto a mi hermano......que buena es.......

  • boxs tops sound better

  • @420420babe No way. This is a much more... Complex version of the song. Yes, The box tops version is great. But this is a masterpiece.

  • @biohazardsoldierPMK we could get in a good fight over this ill agree with the complexity of the instrumental and even the vocals are harder but it was better without the pizzaz the lyrics are more defines witht the box tops the way it should be

  • temazo este del joe,que fenomeno...

  • @PCP, JOE has million selling lps in the 60s,70s,80s 90s, and now in the 21st century!! and LEON RUSSELL is a legend of rock along with this band ,the greatest rock band to EVER tour!! rita coolidge, pam pollard bobby keys, jim keltner ,carl radle, sandy konikoff, brown sugar, and chris stainton, just 2 name afew!!

  • Yes that is Leon .

  • Wow!

  • best version evah

  • a un micrero le gusta esta cancion :)

  • is that Leon Russell playing piano?

  • @PitPat23 yes

  • @PitPat23 YES, IT IS.

  • joe cocker looks like Bunny Goddess

  • There is a DVD that tells the Story of the Mad Dogs and Englishman Tour. All the best of the Videos and the Connie they flew around the USA in. Any fan has to get this. My Original Wax is so worn I dare not play it without a new Cartridge. One wax is still sealed and never been opened. ""Not for Sale" The DVD is awesome to say the least.

  • wait..JC had hair? damn.. where have i been? he's so cool... so smooth..

  • The value of this video captured can not be overstated. This is pure R&R history. This was performed when musicians made NO money at all. This is raw music, talent and desire. Stand up and take note all you neophites. This will never happen again. Thanks to whoever captured this on video. A classic from an era long gone. Joe Cocker, Leon Russel and band...Absolutely stupefying!!!

  • AAH Yeah, Leon Russell. ..

  • Cracovia!!!

  • Leaving it all out on the field

  • Love how Joe becomes completely possessed as soon as he hears the piano. So cool!

  • Leon looks so hot in this video......

    Lucy, TO

  • The guy on the piano is Leon Russell and The sax player is the one and only Bobby Keys. What a great ensemble!!!!

  • Kid Rock's grandfather is awesome on the piano!

  • Justin Bieber could replace Leon Russell and Joe Cocker. He could do the job of both. Bieber rules, Cocker drools.

  • I wouldn't wipe my ass with Beiber

  • @portcityperson you're an idiot...bieber has no soul like these monsters of rock do.

  • @portcityperson You, sir, are a moron. I would point out your error, but I refuse a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

  • @portcityperson You're obviously on some f'd up crack if you think that's true.

  • Joe's best version of this great song. I still get chills from this its so tight!

  • Esta esla major music.

  • @Speckledlillie ke dices?

  • Isn´t that Bobby Keys on the sax? I like him, lots of great songs done with the Stones too

  • Justin Beiber does it better.

  • @portcityperson You do realize you will be hated by an infinite amount of people now. I'm one of them.

  • I always seque onto this after watching Alex and The Box Tops do their thing with it. Saves me having to dig into the attic for the old vinyl. Wonder if it's still in playing condition? All I know is that there was some fine stuff floating around the room - enuf HOPHEADS - let the good times roll - what they have today is totally CRAP - it'll never survive. Check out Joe with Pavarotti - blew my mind.

  • Joe's voice is so fucking hot. This whole thing turns me on!

  • i wish i could get that high hahaha - and be that badass

  • @Quizzlebizzle My guess is you could easily accomplish one out of two!

  • Timeless, smokin stuff (not what you think, ha ha) camera captures Leon Russell here and there, funny he seems so unaffected by the music, just playin it cool, ha, ha. What an excellent songwriter he is also. Awesome concert.

  • Joe Cocker doing this song is one of the greatest things of all time

  • @Quizzlebizzle very NICE---that keyboard play is just about fucked up

  • @jrporter910 That fucked up keyboard player is the one and only Master of Space and Time-Leon Russell.

  • Damn! what memories this brings back. yeah i'm an old hippy chic lol. this dude sings with his whole body! Head arms fingers i just love to see it. hes one of the greats for sure. and Leon Russell was high as as KITE! but still kicked ass. And a lid was 4 fingers lol What great memories i have of 70's music. It the only time music changed a generation, and the world we lived in. Awesome!

  • !!!EXCELENTEEE!!!! qué canción, que interpretación, musicalidad! WOWWWWWWWW

The 70's were the best EVER!

  • Leon Russell the coolest dude!

  • Leon, Bobby Keyes, the Grease Band--LOVE IT!!!!

  • So I have to say something.. A few months ago. I saw this video at first time. Becouse I very liked Joe´s performance on the Woodstock. ..And it was happend! I saw this coooooooool piano player. I just totaly fell in love with Leon Russell. No doubt..:-D No help. Just wanna more and more by him. Love his music ..his look..everything..:-D

  • @184lisa You just made me :)

  • jajaja Subido por guamanlove el 27/02/2008

    the letter buena cancion

te kedaste corto alta cancion interpretada por alto cantante

  • Wow! As much as I love the Box Tops' version of this, I love this just as much! Two totally different renditions, and that's all good. I remember my grandparents having a lake house on Grand Lake in Oklahoma. Leon Russell, I believe, had a house there as well.

  • bien pasados de a madre

  • Leon is the coolest dude on the planet.

  • There was a version of Joe singing this on you tube backed by "The Grease Band" on the "Tom Jones Show" which is far superior to this imo. It was taken off because of copyright I think.

  • Oh I can't get enough of Leon Russell playing the piano.............the funky rocking rhythm and HIM, his eyes, Mr Cool - what a man, what a musician!
