  • Gone are the days of america's top ten with substance, this is one example of music full of substance. Thanks.

  • Her maiden name is 'Gordon'.

  • Is Brenda an alto? That's lower than a soprano. Somebody schooled in voices, please let me know. God bless ya, for yer efforts. Have a blessed week!

  • @DaveWollenberg this is my first time hearing her... its hard to tell by just one song in studio format but she sounds like an alto!!! ...... she could possibly be able to sing Soprano though .....I've never heard of her until now. or at least this song is in alto key... all alto voices arent low .some can sing as high as Aretha Franklin yet stay within that key range ..... and most Sopranos can sing alto. I guess what Im trying to say is that alto singers can have wide range!

  • Joe Cocker did a nice cover of this in the early 80s, but the original is best.

  • Brenda Russel sang about life, love experiences true to the heart........

  • Brenda may not have achieved that super-stardom status that so many of today's "singers" have (notice I put "singers" in quotes, people) but I guaran-damn-tee she'd blow the doors off the vast majority of them. The sister just wows - period. I have been and always will be a fan. Great post. Peace, peoples

  • I remember being in Junior High School when this song came out. If only I could turn back the hands of time. Oh well, it was a nice thought anyway. Great song, great memories...Thanks for posting.

  • Strange story, but I'm an English guy who first heard this in a caravan in the snow (yes, snow) in Perisher Valley in New South Wales, Australia 1981. We'd ski'd our arses off all day, got back, showered, and sat there with a flaggon of Wynvale wine in the candle glow, staring at the Southern Cross through the skylight. It was one of the most enchanting nights I've ever experienced.

  • @DEROUGET great story..

  • @DEROUGET yes..that is a GREAT story .i loved it :)

  • wow, this so reminds me of days growing up on Capitol Hill in Wash, DC...walking home from school...smelling the pizza as I walked by Armandos on Penn Ave. & 7th St...Saturdays, hangin out at the swimming pool next to Eastern Market..and goin over my friend, James' house to listen to his brother's band playing in their basement... I can almost cry listening to this, because those were the most innocent care free days. And you never get those times back.

  • @MisterCrazyLegs did you ever get the eclairs from eastern market they was the bomb..wow i was only 4 when this song came out but i still remember it

  • @MisterCrazyLegs Amen to that. I remember also growing up in SE DC in the 80's and all the girls wanting to sing this song in our schoool's Gong Show. Those were the dys

  • @MisterCrazyLegs

Amen brother. I must be much younger than you, 22, and my first enconuter with Brenda Russell and this song was around the mid 90s. I was about 8/9 years old when my father would play this repeatedly in the car as he would either be taking me to my babysitters house, my grandmothers or to camp. But it was this kind of music that set me apart from the crap that's played on the radio today. Her song "If Only for One Night" will be my wedding song lol..

  • Wonderful!!!!

  • I just listened to this song12 times straight LOL! I'm at work and I can't get it out of my head. It really is sooo good sooo right! Who's with me?

  • @govia21 I am!

  • @sweettee627

LOL! At least someone is. Will you marry me? ha ha!

  • Oh MY GOD - This tune!!!!! I just had goosebumps listening to this AWESOME MASTERPIECE. Muzik with emotion and everlasting heartfelt. Thank U God for Ms. Brenda Russell and her incredible gift!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bless U!

    "Romance"

  • That will be a dream come true if I could write a song with Brenda Russell. I met her daughter at church in Santa Monica, California and if Brenda is 1/2 as sweet as her daughter, then I pray that my dream becomes a reality in our lifetime!!!!

    "Romance"

    Romanceofchicago@yahoo.com

  • I awakened from a dream Saturday morning that I was in church and the pianist was playing this song. Funny thing was that I could hear all the other instruments, yet he was the only musician present! Anyway, I LOVE THIS TUNE FOREVER. I HOPE THEY PLAY IT MY WEDDING SOMEDAY -

    MS. RIGHT WHERE ART THOU?

  • I was just saying to a friend how I used to leave the radio on all night in the 70's &

80's listening to songs like this. I bet if I left the radio on all night now I'd have nightmares.

  • @boogieboo7

Why can't music be this good anymore? I feel that truly good pop music like this peaked about 30 years ago....very sad. I feel sorry for young people today who have to listen to the calvacade of shit that dominates today's airwaves.

  • @boogieboo7 Not necesssarily, if ya left it on a classic hits station. You can relive '70s and '80s, like this 1 was.

  • great seventies song, always loved it,also piano in the dark, she is so talented ,beautiful voice

  • ohthis is where bone thugs gotthis song from they made it sound a lil better but this is good too

  • I love Brenda Russell. This song, if only for one night, piano in the dark. and so many others. She is so talented. Thanks for the post.

  • @laarbe amen

  • its funny how you dont hear a song for years and when it comes on you can still song along like you did when it first came out.

  • When that happens it really trips me out!!! Shows how great the mind is, and how we can store information for years and then use it when we need it!

  • @lusciouslady73 ...word for word.

  • @lusciouslady73 Couldn't have said it better. Same happens to me. So many songs from those years that have resisted the path of time so tight. This one reminds of of my radio exploration years.

  • I also remember when this song first came out, I loved it then and I still love it now even more better. Brenda Russell is a very talented songwriter as well as Patrice Rushen. Thanks for the memories with this song. irvinbean123

  • Brenda is a wonderful songwriter. I like her voice. This song came out in 1979 and it was on the radio every 2 hours. Great song. I love Brenda Russell.

  • ..........AND BETTER

  • i remember this album from when i was little, i still love it!

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • Thank you! I havent heard this in a looooong time!

  • When she sings that second verse -- and extends the "be you" at the end without the "tonight" -- I just sink into such a good place. I put this song on my 08 beach playlist among my current chill list -- and man, everyone was like, "Oh yeah -- where did you dig that out?" I get the same reaction with Rose Royce's "I Wanna Get Next to You" and Norman Connors' "You are my Starship." My '09 list of modern chill I'm gonna throw in "Zoom" by the Commodores.

  • The Bone Thugs cover is also titled "So Good So Right"

  • That is a song I hadn't heard since the 80's. That's singing and it's funky. A classic. Thank YouTube

  • Bone Thugs also covered this song

  • THEY DID???? What is the name of it?

  • I know a rapper who spit this song, his remake is good as hell.

  • I remember when they used to play this song on KNX-FM in Los Angeles way back when. I sure miss those days of beautiful music like this song. I'll be listening to this song in heaven. Thank-you Brenda!

  • I'm assuming KNX-FM had a "Mellow Album" format back in the day. I'd sure as hell like to see something like that again! It sure as hell would be better than what's on the radio these days.

  • Wow!! I grew up in LA and used to listen to KMX-FM all the time, especially at night. I used to listen to Mike Saklaretes (sp?) "The Greeks All Night Diner" after midnight. I'd hear all the soft rock hits of the day. Thank you for mentioning that station: you have brought back a rush of fond memories!!

  • Well, I'm from Maryland and don't remember anything about KNX-FM. That was runnerman's opinions. Either way, I'd sure as hell like to see a format like theirs or similar back on the air, though.

  • Wow!! I grew up in LA during the 70s and 80s. And I always used to listen to KNX-FM. My favorite show was Mike Saklaretes(sp?) " The Greek's All Night Diner", which came on after midnight. I can't believe you listened to the same station, too!! Loved all the soft rock hits of the day, especially this song. You have evoked in me very fond memories from a time that is now lost. Thanks.

  • I want to remake this song. I promise I won't mess it up! lol

  • I would love to hear this song remade, but please don't overdo it "American Idol" style! This song is so simple and so beautiful. It should have been a bigger hit. Good luck on your cover!

  • I feel you!!! and I know exactly what u are saying. Simple and pretty is the way it should stay! Thanks and I will do my best.

  • Well, obviously you love great music, so I trust you'll do a great job. This is one of the most romantic songs ever, and it deserves a larger audience. Best of luck to you!

  • I haven't heard this since forever. Funny, I thought her husband wrote this. But it doesn't matter. She sang the heck out of it.

  • Oh what a classic...my fav Brenda Russell song! thx 4 the post!

  • This song makes me happy :)

  • Me too

  • Summer of 1979! Much better music and much better times...

  • Excellent song....reminds me of my sis'...she died in May '06....I miss her. Thanks for posting.....

  • Ah, my favorite Brenda Russell song!

  • Man....this song is sooooo pretty! It brings back memories. I played this song over and over when I first heard it in the 80s.

This song was a big part of my personal growth from a teenager to a man...

  • I love this song.. Me and my sister downloaded this song on mistake and i checked it out and i mean hell naw this is me to be with me

  • And, I mean't that by saying that she is a classic in R&B Old School Music!!

  • Brenda Russell is in the hall of fame of classic music!

  • oh if i could've made a dime for every performance i did with a hairbrush microphone in my bedroom i'd be a gazillionaire...loooove this song...i had the worst crush on tony vaughn and used to think of him when i sang it!!! hey babe...

  • This song takes me back to good times with my family. All us cousins would sing our hearts out, we'd make up dance routines from Funky Town to Ring my bell...I was only 9 but was very much influenced by the oldies - 50's, 60's & 70's by my family. It's just feel good music y'know! Sure do miss those days!!!

  • Reminds me of when I lived in Sydney in 81/82. Went skiing up at Perisher, stayed in a caravan listening to Brenda over a glass of wine in great company...great days.....

  • If Only for One Night is also on this album. She wrote and sang the hell out of that song.

  • Brenda saaaaaaaaaang this song!!!

  • wow the person below me is pretty dumb

my M.S.N id is in my profile! GI

  • I remember this song in 1980 and it got extensive airplay on AM stations that year. I bought the CD in '99

  • Brenda isn't just the singer--she wrote this too, and all her songs (Get Here, Piano In The Dark, etc.)

  • I love this song. Although I was in elementary school when it came out it was one of my favorites back then. Brenda Russell is still one of the best performers around.

  • great song!!!

  • OK I am totally in a sentimental mood now after listening to this song; this is one of those songs that reminds me of my early adolescence years. I remember liking the breakdown part of the song. To me, this song sounds like something Hall & Oats would sing too. Does anybody agree? Something about it reminds me of Hall & Oats for some reason.

  • I love this song. It reminds of when I got together with my girlfriend, who is now my wife. This comment from thespeez is totally correct and I can vouch for it! "Actually, the release date of this song was late summer or early fall of 1979."

You see, we got together in June of 1979 and it came out soon after.

    BTW- we're still together :-)))

  • Looooove this song! I used to sing it into a brush a thousand times a day when I was a little girl! Right on to whomever put this up!!! Reminds me of a horrble blissful crush I had on a cute little boy...ahh those were the days.

  • I LOVE Brenda Russell ... she's just so smooth. Love Will Find A Way is another great performance of hers in a duet with Oleta Adams. It plays through the ending credits of the movie Corrina, Corrina staring Whoopie Goldberg and Ray Liotta. It's such an AWESOME and powerful song. I wish I could find a video of the two of them performing that song. Oh, the movie is great too! (-:

  • This is a real love song.

  • I had this album back in the 70's when it first came out. This is still my all time favorite female album. This is simply a well written album (every song). If song writers wrote song like hers, I would continue to buy music. Since they don't, it's time to download.

  • This is one of the most overlooked songs from the 70's (1978) from an outstanding singer who has never been given credit for being just that, an outstanding singer, great song, no doubt!!

  • I agree..I love it!!saw her do it at bb kings nyc 2 years ago!!

  • Actually, the release date of this song was late summer or early fall of 1979 originally on Horizon and then on A&M. It got up to #30 on Billboard's pop chart. I was fourteen then. I have to agree this song was one of her more underrated efforts.

Oddly enough FWIW, a friend of mine mistook her for Mariah Carey. I had to correct him and told him how old the song was.

  • Cool, thanks for the Billboard info, you're right, it was 1979, I was thinking that it was 1978, but hey at least I was in the ballpark (lol), I do know that it was, and still is an excellent song from a then relatively unknown singer.

  • i remember this record 1978-9 i was juast standing naked in windsor great park i was only 14

  • I grew up on this record. This was before music videos and MTV BET at least this was before cable came to DC. Me and my brother used to play this record over and over and look at the cover while we listened, that was our music videos, I love Brenda Russell and give thanks :-)

  • When I think of Alisha Keys, Brenda always come to mind.

  • I wonder if any piano sheet music for her songs exist. What an awesome artist.

  • can you please post "you're free"? thanks!!!

  • I'd made love to this jam as a teen for the first time...it was so good...love her music.

  • That is the jam...nostalgic. Wish I was young again! Well, I'm still young...I wish I felt young again! Thanks for the vid.

  • Gravity is awesome- post that too if possible!

  • "Way Back When" is a great one, too. Post 'em if you got 'em! lol

  • great song... guitar, drums & bass and... violins...hmm... blends perfectly - who'da thunk it - nice touch

  • @nebaioth

You are so right...the perfect pop song all around. I was there was a video of her perfroming this song back in '79.

  • Lindíssima ...me recorda um gande amor!
