  • MP5 with integral is much quieter and smoother. That Sterling had a larger volume silencer and that makes difference.

  • I do love the MP5 and both the Sterling. In Combat the MP5 would probably be better than the sterling but say a stealth mission I might just go sterling...

  • Yes - the Sterling

  • the Sterling for sure

  • At first, greetings from your fans from Germany, you are awesome! The German KSK often uses the MP 5 SD,with integrated Silencer. Is there a big difference to the Version with replaceable Silencer used in your vid?

  • @spongi45 Hi and thanks. Yes, any intergral suppressor will have better sound suppression over one that is externally attached. Containment and slow dispersion of hot gases is the key.

  • I think a MP5SD would have been a better comparison (competition) to the integrally suppressed Sterling. As it stands the Sterling wins.

  • @c2builder I was just wondering how do you feel about the tv show sons of guns. When I found you on youtube I stopped watching "Sons of guns" You are awesome !!

  • @TheMrBoar Thanks. The NFA community as a whole has a mixed view of the TV show, but I really think it is a negative impact they portray for the Class 2 firearms manufacturer. There is too many problems about the show and the cast to get into here. Lets just say that I and other Class 2's that I know are not impressed.

  • MP5 4ever

  • I would agree. The Sterling actually makes less noise than the Mp5. Totally surprises me. Thanks for another great video!

  • Now this is my kind of video :-D Just wondering, does the L34A1 use a shorter/ported barrel? Also can the suppressor be removed for cleaning etc? would also make a cool video :-j

  • @joehunt1980 Yes it does have a short barrel which is also drilled with holes to distribute the hot gases throughout the suppressor baffles. I may do a detailed vid soon.

  • i still dont get how people get full auto guns. i thought the gun had to be pre 1986 so where do u find these old guns at

  • @sharpshooternick hes a class 3 dealer can d calss 2 builder he has the ability to legally own post 86 machine guns

  • @sharpshooternick If you're in the market for some pre-86 civilian legal MGs, you'll have to have at least $4000 saved up (and that'll get you a Mac 10, or if you're really lucky, a Stemple Sten Mk 2), and I can point you in the direction of some for sale. They're not particularly hard to find, but the expense involved keeps them from being a feature in every gun collection.

  • mp5 is louder

  • the germans make the best weapons

  • You need to take out the MP5SD, that thing is way quieter than both of those two guns, and I mean WAAAAY quieter. You basically just hear clicks and the empty casings hit the ground.

  • an HK MP5 SD6 would be quiter than any gun and u hear is the bolt and the shell casing hiting the ground.

  • I think I want of these seriously... Did you have to call HK to get it?

  • @TheMango121 you can buy from a friend,a gun show, a website, all those different things.

  • You need Mp5SD to compare

  • Either one is reaaaaallly quiet. Suppressors are supposed to merely make it tough to find your location anyways if I am right but no suppressor (or silencer, ppl seem to use em interchangeably) will make a whisper quiet shot unless its subsonic, and yeah, you can hear the bolt smack. Still far quieter then the POW POW you hear in the back :D

  • Grate job man...

  • i believe its becuse of the blowback on the mp5 silincer

plus around 1:13 you can see someone "Took Aim" at the roof

  • i think that it is louder with the supressor. just my opinion.

  • compare it with an hk sd

  • Based on your video, the Sterling is the quieter unit. If one were to do the same as some of the suppressed Sten guns and fit a bronze bolt assy, the 'clack" of the bolt, as demonstrated by the video, would be greatly reduced. I should think that there were some surprised faces, at the "antique' Sterling being much the quieter unit. Your effort is much appreciated.

  • damn u gotta b ah bold soul 2 stand in front of ah man while he shootin ah gun damn the great footage when ya lifes at hand.....literally

  • Yeah, esp. w/ subsonic ammo (& probably a bit of arctic oil or Break-Free), the Stirling sounds quieter. From what I've seen, the better modern weapon would be the MP5SD.

I'd also like to see you do a comparison between the M60 and the MAG58.

  • good video, surprised to see the old sterling holding it own

  • it might have been more even if you used a MP5SD

and also there is a reasonable size difference between the two supressors which should effect there abilities

  • "Let's try full automatic and see if it's any quieter"

    The american way :D

  • Does adding a silencer increase Range and accuracy because of the extended barrel length? or does it lose Range because the gas is vented when it hits the silencer.

  • @blondbassist It loses range but i dont believe it loses any accuracy, but i do know that the gas being vented makes it less efective at longer ranges, but u shuldnt notice any difference out to medium range

  • 1:15 looks like someone had to much to drink (gun shots in the roof :P )

  • Such a deceptively calm and soft sound & recoil

  • Dang, you can really see how loud the guns are AFTER he is shooting and trys talking! the audio has to re-adjust for his voice.

  • Enjoyed the video. It was nice to hear how effective these suppressors are.

As much as I enjoyed watching the videos I would have been rather unhappy to be the camera man at the point of the video where the gun is pointed, not directly at the lens but, in the neighborhood of the lens.

Being a mechanic I find your videos of gun disassemblies and rebuilds particularly interesting. Thanks for the good work.

  • sterling is definitely quieter on the vid, I wonder how it would stack up against and MP5-SD instead of just an A2 with a suppressor. Not trolling, genuinely curious

  • You should try the MP5 SD

  • that sterling is the quietest 9mm ive ever seen. WOW,

  • is that L34A1 original , spiral baffle or modern ?

  • @GriMty420 This Sterling is all original, with the old style spiral baffle, wire mesh screen and brass guide rods. Very effective.

  • @C2builder best sterling ive seen, is it yours>? very nice indeed

  • @MultiSr16 Yes.

  • @C2builder great find, and i agree, its quieter then the HK., jus an outstanding weapon u have in the sterling, i cant say enough, and i love full auto from the open bolt, hell, it sounds like a rimfire..shes a keeper:) ttyl

  • @C2builder

I've heard that the old Swedish M/45 submachine gun is suppose to be pretty quiet when suppressed.

Supposedly the Navy Seals and other special forces kinda liked it for that reason.

Now that is only a fully automatic gun however.

I mention it since you have the old Sterling there and it does sound more silent over the Mp5.

Then again how does the Mp5 with built in suppressor sound? perhaps that one is less noisy.

  • @Swecan76 I doubt the built-in suppressor MP-5 would do much better

  • @C2builder how much the mp5 costs? thanks in advance

  • @C2builder just awesome does not sound outdated to me ;) .. thanks for the video

  • All I can say is; How much? and GIVE IT TO ME!!!!

It looks like the Sterling has less recoil, and stays on taget better as well. Is that the nature of the open bolt slamming forward, or a weight thing? As I can not make up which I like better, I will just have to have both. Take checks?!?!?

  • Very Well Tested but did you consider that the Sterling's Suppressor

is Integral and the MP5's is an add on. I Truthfully would have used an

MP5SD for comparison to the L34.

  • Out of curiosity, is the Mp5 still used nowadays? Or do you think it'll be replaced by the UMP, MP7, or G36?

  • @Haha1stAccount lol yes it is

the mp5 is used all over the place SAS,swat,gsg9,alot of police use all over the globe

  • the mp5 sd is much quieter, it converts supersonic ammo to subsonic

  • The Sterling is way quieter even though it shoots at an open bolt. The HK is much louder than the Sterling but it would still be nice to have the HK Mp5 for us in Iraq and Afghan. Clearing houses is kind of harder with a M4. It is much better for close contact. Nice video of both weapons.

  • GOOD VIDEO...like the way you took the video. i have used the sterling version, and i feel inspite of its age it shoots well..

  • The sterling seems like it is even more controllable than the Mp5 :D

  • Many times old is better than new. I was told by someone in the cdn military that they didn't re-issue THE FAL / CIA1 because it would appear that adopting the m4 was a mistake.

  • Could you give a compare and contrast between the L2A3 vs L34A1? What are some of the cons of the L34A1. I have a MK4 and am contemplating converting it (with an additional form 4 of course :) THANKS!!

  • @alphozo Great suggestion! I think that can be put on the list of things to come.

  • @C2builder And to add Could you do a Compare and Contrast with AusSteyr vs M16? I am Aussie and have used AusSteyrs before very accurate so if America has a better thing to compare then M-16 then try that. Give it a go us Aussies would love to see a good comparison

    Thankyou

    Keep up Gun Spirit!

  • i think the mp5 w/ out the silencer is still quiet for a gun

  • Hi C2builder yeah the Sterling is definatly quieter , im wondering if you watch the vid closely your getting much more smoke around the breach of the mp5, wonder if thats is where your getting the extra noise from technically the bolt on the mp5 is closed and when the cartridge goes off it then open eith the sterling its going off just as the bolt is closing and then has too open so just a bit more gas is being pushed down that muzzle , Really all you hear from the Sterling is mehanical

  • Hi looking closely on the Mp5 there is a lot more smoke around the breech than the sterling, maybe your getting more noise from the gasses escaping there, The sterling is definatly quieter the most noise you hear is all mechanical,

And oldrocketscientist said the magazines on the sterling no one anywhere has yet come up with anything too beat them not bad for something designed 66 years ago

  • the sterling is quieter to me...

  • I think the Sterling is more quiet. It seems that most of the guns with an intregal supressor are more quiet than those with a can attached to the muzzle. This is another great video showing lots of detail and different camera angles. Thanks for posting it!

  • i have shot both a KGB armament L34a1 and a MP5SD and the sterling has it by a hair in the quiet dept. The Sterling eclipses the HK in reliability, and ease of cleaning. The Sterling has the best mags made for any firearm on earth with roller ball bearing followers, and in my opinion the Sterling just shoots better. The only advantage that i see that the HK has over the Sterling is the availability of a beta drum mag.

  • a supressed .22 mp5 (gsg-5) would be the order of the day.....would be vert quiet, reliable and more accurate then 9mm versions.....downside because its .22 you would have to quite close to your target to get kills.

  • Great video, very entertaining and informative.

  • damn i love the sterling, such a cool design

  • the sterling was a lower pitched sound harder to detect than the h&k's high pitched "snapping" kind of sound.

  • Hello,

Did you used Sub-Sonic Ammo for this Test?

PS: You ever tried a Cola Bottle or a Potatoe as Silencer?? It realy works, the decibel count is nearly the Same with org Supressor or Cola Bottle. They tested this in a TV Show

  • @Weedus2, 147gr on the Mp5 and 115gr with the Sterling.

Yes I have done the Cola bottle thing, but it's still illegal to do so. One of my favorite sayings is; "Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead". Remember that.

  • @C2builder why is it illeagle?

  • Both sounds about the same in the video, is it possible to run the WWII suppressor wet without damaging it?

  • The built-in Sterling suppressor on this model is of the old original design and doesn't use baffles like modern suppressors, so no it wouldn't work very well and might damage it.

  • I have to say i'd prefer the sterling over the mp5 for it's surpressed volume and for the controlability on full auto, this may be because i'm british;)

great vids, thanks for all the info!

  • The sterling seems more compact and sleek possibly more ergomatic.

  • The sterling sounded quieter in the video. Thanks for taking the suppressor off at the end, I've had a hard time finding youtube videos with both suppressed and unsuppressed on the same weapon it was nice to make the comparison. Furthermore thanks for posting all the 1st person machine gun videos.

  • You're welcome.

  • Have you ever seen or shot a British WW2 silenced carbine called a Delisle it was made from parts of other weapons, cut down Lee stock, and modified bolt action, fired a 45ACP,from a Thompson or Browning mag, legend has it this was the quietest shooting weapon of the 20th century?

  • I've only seen pictures of one, they are fairly rare here in the USA. Yes, I heard they were the quietest carbine made.

  • See the 458 SOCOM,new highpower round for ar 15[finally]600 gr bullet, monster round ,available subsonic

  • I think the Sterling is the most quiet. Thats amazing! Keep on shooting and share it with us! :-)

  • Is there possibility that the Hk roller lock slams harder against the barrel than that of the Sterling. Eitherway, should it really matter if the weapon fires from an open or closed bolt? The Sterling slams before fireing the cartrige, the MP5 after. Our Rk95s had a switch wich closes the gastube, intended for use with rifle grenades but also when fireing with a supressor on. You only get one shot and have to reload afterwards, but you eliminate that noise from the bolt coming back forward

  • The biggest drawback to the open bolt subgun for suppressor use is not just the noise from the bolt slamming closed, it will also throw off your point of aim. It is obvious that the Sterling is quieter mainly due to the suppressor being intergral with the guns reciever tube. Thanks.

  • Uzi and a MAC-10, both silenced, would be a great one if you have both. :D

  • I am wondering: what is this straight magazine on your MP5 ?

  • The HK Mp5 had two types of mags, straight and curved, both holding 30rds. I prefer the original German straight mags on the Mp5, they are made of thicker material and are more reliable.

  • i thought they went to curved mags because they feed better than the straight ones

  • New one to me. Europe still uses the straight mags and they are still in production.

  • well, from this movie the Sterling definitely is more quiet. I would love to know just how many decibels each weapon records.

  • i think its got to be the sterling! even though that open bolt dose make a wack!

  • I think the Sterling is much quieter than the MP5. How does a suppressed Uzi stack up against the two?

  • I'll be doing a shoot-out between the Sterling and the Uzi next. Stay turned and subscribe.

  • thanks for that , how many l34(5?)'s were made ?

  • Not really sure how many were made but it was alot less than the standard Sterling L2A3 model. This one has a serial number showing made in 1976, so they were still making them then.

  • wow sterling sounds if it is silenced, i nearly didnt hear any sound :O nice red dot sight :) 5*

  • Were you using subsonic ammo? It sounded almost like the MP5 was using supersonic ammo.

  • 147gr in the Mp5, 115gr in the Sterling.

  • The HK is defenitely the most advanced design, and mechanically better, but you are after all comparing a integrally suppressed gun (L34A1) vs. a subgun with a barrel mounted can. If you'd got your hand on one of the MP5SDx versions, i'm certain those would be more quiet.

  • is the mp5SD the one with the built in silencer and different hand guard?

  • Yes it is, and is a little quieter than the Mp5 with the Gemtech suppressor I was using. I'm try to buy one now. Thanks.

  • This right here. The Sterling is integrally supressed and therefore has significant report reduction. I'm sure an MP5SD would be significantly quieter than either the Sterling or an MP5 with added supressor.

  • The main reason I stacked these two up against each other is because the H&K would have an advantage over the Sterling and it's open bolt operation, yes the HKMp5SD would be quieter but I thought these two were a good challange. I'm still more impressed with the Sterling, but I'm being influenced by the history.

  • The differenced between silenced open bolt and silenced closed bolt is noticeable only in semiauto mode.

Anyway , Builder, how fare can you reach the target with an mp5? Is it more like a carbine?

  • The Mp5 is good out to 100yrds, and I think that is based on the fact that European Police do use it as a carbine as well as a subgun.

  • Yep, that's what I thought. Never used one, but I think it has considerably more range than let's say an open bolt UZI (which I have used quite a lot).Probably it has a longer barrel than most second generation mps too.

  • were you using subsonic ammo? great video mate

  • I was using 147gr in the Mp5, 115gr in the Sterling. Thanks.

  • are those newly made striaght mags for the mp5 or the original ones?

  • The straight mags are original H&K, I prefer them over any others.

  • nice weapons my friend

  • ★★★★★

  • nice demo, the differences were amazing!5/5

  • Sterling it was hard but id say sterling

  • Do you have to use subsonic ammo?

  • Actually no. The Sterling works well with subsonic or supersonic ammo. The Mp5 does better with 147gr as opposed to a lighter bullet like 115gr for sound suppression.

  • Straight stick mag? Your the first one I've seen use one of those in a while! :D

The Sterling is definitely has less of a discharge sound, however, I don't think that's the reason that it was replaced. What are the specifics for the reasons for replacement?

  • I prefer the straught mags for a 9mm Mp5, they just seem to work better than the curved. The Sterling has been around since the late 1940's and the utility use for them was just not that great for service other than sentry removal and clandestine operations. The HK is a better weapon mechanically and does provide better range and ballistics.

  • i think the HK is the best

  • so which is better?

  • Mh i am surprised sounds like the sterling makes less noisy

  • @FirstSpaceLord it has a built in supressor
