It's cheap, has a WAY shorter half-life, and it's not a resource consuming. The U.S. had a choice to either use this (uranium) or throrium during WWII and opted to use uranium 'cause it's waste could be used as weapon material. So there: a beneficial counterpart to uranium. The final assumption is that it will spread evenly throughout the semispherical volume, whereas in reality a large proportion would settle quickly to the ground.
So, assuming your 50m away from this almost impossible blast (enough to feel the heat and be knocked off your feet), you'd soon find yourself breathing about 7.6mg of UO3 for every cubic metre of air you breathe in (twice the yearly safe intake). -Note that the DU will, in the fire of the wreckage, oxidise gradually over time, not all at once, meaning it spreads more gradually and more thinly over a wider area (reducing the potency). Have you seen the sensationalised "expose" of DU here? Where the reporter puts a geiger counter to a 30mm (I think) DU round casing and notes the high levels of radiation? As you can see, alot of the DU has remained with the round that it went in with.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm an expert on this subject - I'm only just starting Engineering studies, but I can make some basic calculations, with assumptions of borderline impossible conditions that favour the maximum potential adversity of uranium oxide contamination. The assumptions are:
-That the tank explodes perfectly, sending smoke and shrapnel in all directions, in a semispherical type shape.
-That all of the 2kg of DU in the SABOT round oxidises almost instantly. CONTINUED...
