@tjdrodgers all IFR aircraft are required to carry a certain amount of fuel on board. Here in Canada...at least as of a few years ago...the rule was: enough fuel to get to your destination + to the alternate airport...there's your kicker buddy...plus I believe 20 minutes.

If it's an emergency landing, fine...obviously do what you have to do. Land on a damn field if you have to. But if you DON'T have to, you're a moron if you attempt unnecessary dangerous landings...NOT a great pilot.

Great pilots wouldn't attempt some of these moronic landings. Great pilots AVOID microbursts and dangerous situations and don't put themselves in positions where they have to be "great".

@DJFLDJFL great pilots? what are you talking about? if you had 2k hours of flying experience, would YOU make a hour long delay on the arrival if you had to pull up and circle around endlessly until you got a spot? no you'd use your EXPERIENCE and knowledge of physics to land the plane, its hard but very possible, it doesnt make them GREAT or amazing pilots. it makes them professional pilots. and they obviously wont attempt it unless they are positive they can land the plane genius.

@TruWuFFY I'm a controller. My dad retired as an airline pilot after logging over 2000 hours for the military. Both my grandads were military pilots. I'm not some yabbo spouting off here. My dad also did crash investigations for both the military...where he lost friends and fellow military pilots... and also for Transport Canada. You do dangerous things, it will eventually catch up with you. Like flipping a coin...it's only a matter of time.

It takes a very skilled pilot to land an airplane in crosswind. Ive been on a very bumpy landing myself. The pilots centered the runway perfectly but we almost overan the runway. MAN it was scary i thought i was about to die. LOL.

Also I am literally blown away by the fact that they can manouver a machine of that size like that! I had a landing like that once, but it was in a Fokker propeller plane in a real stormy weather, but you cannot compare a Fokker propeller with a B747. Look at the distance the pilot is using to turn the entire plane. Incredible!! =D
