That looks to be David Freiberg. He played bass for Quicksilver Messenger Service. I believe I read he was Kantner's roommate in the early early sixties and they played folk music together. He joined the Airplane to replace the irreplacable Marty Balin, and did as good a job as could be expected.

all of Kantner's music cries out for a heavy bass guitar. he needs a jack casady-like addition to fill out the sound. keyboards just don't cut it.
