The media made George Wallace a racist. He loved all people, but was condemned for standing up for the law.The majority of people in ALABAMA wanted segregation so he supported it.George took a couple of bigshot reporters from NEW YORK to a black tavern in ALABAMA.They were scared to death. The owner(a black women)comes running out to GEORGE WALLACE and gives him a big hug.Think about that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's a headcheck for you supporters-Wallace lost his only race for governor of Alabama to Gov. Patterson, and that was because he didn't have the Klan support on his side. After he won over the Klan, he had what he needed to run/ruin the state of Alabama. Imagine how advanced Alabama might have become if not for Wallace, his racism, and his good ol' boy system. He repented of his racism on his deathbed...how come he couldn't have done so in the sixties?
Wallace was one of the most progressive Southern governors and that is why in his bid for reelection he won 92% of the Black vote in Selma AL- started more colleges than any other and actually brought Alabama up from the near bottom to a respectable showing in almost all gages for progress.
He did repent on his death bed. He repented years before that and served at least two more terms of Governor after repenting, maybe three.
Alabama's main problem is their dependence on Fed. funds for almost everything. The state consitution makes it impossible for any government entity in the state to borrow any money without the consent of all voters in the state.
nycswl2006 is a jackass. Want a 'redneck jackass' president? Look at Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton. Wallace would've been a great president.
Wallace wasn't a racist. He was just a smart politition and knew what the people of Alabama wanted to hear. You can't repent something you've never done.
The Sunshine Skyway bridge was hit by a barge in a blinding rain in May 1980. A Greyhound bus wasone of the vehicles that plunged over the section that went down. A number of people died. The bridge was rebuilt completely end to end and the old sections are still standing being used as a fishing pier.
Construction on the Key Bridge on the Baltimore Beltway did not start until 1972. The bridge in the video has a parallel span (under construction) behind it. Those spans are the original Sunshine Skyway bridges (opened 1954/1971) across Tampa Bay in Florida.
We would most likely be living in a different America today had Wallace won in '68 or '72. I don't think our public schools would have taken such a dive nor would we even be discussing a border problem. He would have ended the war in Vietnam and brought our troops home. A misunderstood fellow who is constantly judged "out of his time". Unless you lived it, you can't possibily understand it.
You are absolutely right. Having lived in Alabama during his time as governor (4 terms)it's a shame he wasn't able to win the presidency. He was ahead of his time.
I've lived it and your right he is judged out of his time. Because you see what your saying is correct. It was his public display of his misunderstanding of what this country should be was the problem. All the victimizations that took place all over the country with his support just isn't going to go away. Even though there doing such a fine job of doing it if I must say so myself.
I dont understand how this racist sob became governor in alabama not once not twice but three times.

George Wallace was a great American, and would've been a fine President. When you reach Hell, BobReidy, you won't see Him there burning with you.

Wallace was a great man and you anti racists should walk from one end of DC to another and see how sanctimonious you are if you emerge at the end.

As much of a racist as he was, he sure as hell would have been better than Nixon.

Wallace was nuts -- in his time, out of his time, the man was still nuts.

Wallace would have created his own border problem -- we'd all be trying to flee to Canada.
