This is abeautiful Rodgers and Hammerstein composition.I think that Barbara over-emotes in this rendition, which she has a tendency to do. I've heard others do a much better job with it.
was just reflecting on the hope that Presidents of the Past inspired during times of human and American crisis...ANd here we have someone who has inspired and given hope to people for her entire career, and is doing it again during this period of our national shock and grief..Thanks Barbra...And thanks to Richard Rodgers and especially , Oscar Hammerstein II with his beautiful and infinitely human lyric...
Ellen De Generes who hosted the show kept hinting that something special was coming at the end. I remember thinking it could only be Barbra. And it was.I lost it, as septmber 11 was still so fresh in our minds and there was the greatest singer in history telling us that we are strong enough to go on.Thanks Barbra 4 delivering a wonderful performance in honour of those who fell.
Streisand does an outstanding performance with this song in light of 911. She gives the audience a reason to believe that we will all get through this no matter what happens to us!
@cdpete You don't understand singers then - in order to really convey a song to people's hearts and minds, it comes from within them - it is the root of their humanity. I'm not an artist, per se, and admire what they do because of what they put into their work - their soul actually, whether it be fine art, music, dance, it all involves their humanity if it's worth anything at all. Otherwise, hire a robot.
Hello. it's called Freedom - including Artistic Freedom and Creative License - that fortunately we have the good fortune and opportunity to have and express. Try going to Afghanistan and complain that anyone can express themselves the way they wish - or you yourselves had to be the mouthpiece for a given item that had to be expressed exactly the way YOU want it, to the T. If you don't like that people can do this - move there. You might be happier.
I am a fan of Barabara... you are right... cdpete. But I think artists try to put a bit of their personality/signature to their works... maybe that's the reason. You should listen the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing this!!
I have to agree with cdpete,I really am disappointed when someone takes a song as beautiful as this one and takes such terrible libertys with it.Just my opinion,I think she ruined it!!!!(another pet peeve is the complete trashing of our beloved national anthum by most singers today, they embellish to the point of becoming almost unrecognizable)
sorry to all Streisand fans - she ruins it - because she can't sing it straight - too mannered for my tastes - I've never liked her singing because of the mannerisms - sing it as it was written - she brings a bel canto approach to the song that was never intended by the composer(s).
@cdpete She took a wonderful song to help America heal after 9/11. Are you really so selfish and self-righteous that you wouldn't allow someone to use a masterpiece to help others- whether it's 9/11 or personal struggle, all in the name of football? Get a life, and a heart with a shred of compassion.
I wish they would bring Carousel back to broadway just for this song...it really is an amazing song...and I would love to see the moment...on a stage...my Dad loves it...and sings it to my own kids
Barbra sang this song to close the Emmy Awards in 2001. If I remember correctly, the awards were postponed because of 9/11. Ellen Degeneres hosted the show and was a stellar, reserved host for the evening - and then Barbra came to close the show. What a moving tribute, what a voice! It was very effective how she began by facing the wall of the victims' names and then ended the song by turning to face the names once more. We should never forget what happened on that day in September.
@RealPCGamers That's what you've been made to believe..... I dont blame you for that. If you could meet Rodgers and Hammerstein, they'd tell you what you really dont know and where they actually got this song.
it's funny all the comments from the Liverpool Football ppl who seem to think this song belongs to them. It has been sung at associated football games for 50 years, so I guess I see their point. But it is originally from the Broadway musical 'Carousel' in 1945 and was sung by a mother to her daughter whose husband had just killed himself. And it was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein...both Americans...so, just sayin'. But, c'mon, this performance is great and the song is meaningful & timeless.
@markcbanfield Obviously you have no class. I guess you disregard what happened on 9/11 Oh by the way how is it a scouse song when it was written by 2 americans in a american play (carousal) in 1945 sung originally by a american. You sir/mam are a total douchebag putz.
This song was not originally for a football club btw. Sure Liverpool may have made it a bit of a theme song for them, however the original song is from Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein and is suppose to be an uplifting song for those facing hard times (in the case of the show, he loved one was dying if i remember correctly) and was written and first performed in the 1930s. While you all talking about Liverpool wanna claim the song belongs to them, it is bigger than your sphere of interest.
@judgejudyslover Well, everyone should think their own country is the greatest on Earth. Patriotism is a good and noble thing. America and England are probably the two best and closest allies on this planet - so you think we're arrogant and we have our opinions about you - but, when it counts we would defend you to the death and visa versa. We are linked together for eternity, like bickering siblings sometimes, but, in the end...it's all good.:)
@KBC10 you apparently are the arrogant prick. This performance was done in respect and memory of those who died in the worst Terrorist attack in American history not some stupid ass football club in liverpool. Get a life you drunk ass, irish, arrogant and ignorant prick. (see we in America can through "stereotyping" insults too).
@klaxen123 I think you mean "THROW sterotyping insults" and i'm Irish so you have proved how dum YOU are by stooping down to the same level as that idiot, DUM ASS!!
@funkytownbadger I don't mean to insult you funky, I only stated it the way i did to give him a taste of his own medicine. I am an American and was highly insulted by his remark, considering what that performance meant to many of my friends who had lost loved ones in the attacks she was paying tribute to. I apologize to anyone offended (except KBC unless of course he would like to apologize to Americans for his insulting comment.)
I was asked to sing this at my grade 8 grad, 40 years ago hope I sounded 1 tenth as good as this beautiful women. I know I didn't but it was sure the scariest thing I ever had to do. The strange part is, I recall before singing and after singing it, but have no recollection of singing the song. weird eh. I wonder if Barbra remembers the actual performance. she is marvelous.
@sjpw62 the video was uploaded in 2009....it doesn't mean barbra sang this on that day. the person recorded her performance a long time ago and uploaded later on Aug. 4, 2009. That explains it.....
She is a living legend. What a star What a voice My wish is that she should come to Cape Town S Africa to perform. I will pay anything to be able to have the privilege to see her.
She is amazing, but it lacks the soul of the ordinary folks, its a bit too fancy, this song is more a hymn to be honest, to give hope to the ordinary people inlife, the peopel who's dreams never came true but have to go on regardless
great voice, but this song is about the lyrics not about the singer trying to stand out. The 45k singing this at anfield sing it better as well as the thousands at celtic park, twente, dortmund and around the world
barbra will always be barbra no matter what, in any sense of description. all things will perish on earth, but not the soothing voice of a legend that serve as fragrance to the creator of the universe.
Her voice is hoarse in some places and it grieves me to hear her with a cold, or worse, age. Whe IS considered by pros to be, on most any list, the best female singer alive. Has produced the most top hit albums.
Something wonderful. I have yet to read anything terrible about her of her life. No perscription abuse. No time professionally lost due to something unexpected. No time in rehab. Not even plagerism.
@stevesg92 I wouldn't say wither and die but this is not a strong Barbra performance. She sort of throws her voice at peak moments and fails to inspire throughout. It's also a dull arrangement. Most of Barbra's peers have also lost much of their vocal prowess--Diana Ross and Aretha to name just 2--but it's interesting to hear what remains of their talent. Skills like phrasing, interpretation of lyric, overall musicality, et al. never leave singers of this quality.
Brings tears to your eyes. I remember this, it was the Emmy's right after 9/11/2001. She wanted to do something for those who lost their lives, she wanted to pay her respects to the Greatest Country of All, the USA. I have been a fan of Barbra's since I was a child. I grew up with just hearing the word Streisand you knew who it was, she is the epitamy of class. Still rearing up now, just beautiful.
I am a huge Streisand fan,& I know I'll be villified by those who think she can do no wrong, but she absolutely crucified this song! She was all over the place with it & the tempo was just wrong! Yes,it was her interpretation,I guess, but it's the 1 tarck on the album where it appears which I rarely,if ever, listen to.That said, she IS a stand-alone performer & in the main the finest vocalist we've had in decades.
@chrisdelve1994 well what a crap comment!! just try in all your life to come close to barbra streisand perfection and work of art than you will be able to judge!!
This is the most moving 9/11 musical tribute I've ever seen! The way it starts out with her looking at the names of all those who were killed (back to the audience), then turning around to sing to the rest of America "Walk On ...Though Your Dreams Be Tossed and Blown." The sign saying "Our hearts are broken - our spirits are not." And her singing - so moving, so inspired, so beautiful! She really rose to the occasion. God bless America!
@moreton3 What a load of rubbish. This song is from one of the finest musicals to come out of Hollywood. I would guess that most liverpool fans don't know that , and they certainly dont know all the words.
@TheDADDYBAILEY i and many liverpool fans will knowthe origins of this song.the only musical i like is the one the kop perform every time liverpool play lol im not into the whole musical thing.......its for gay men to enjoy...have a nice day with your your bf lol
@moreton3 Why, because the Liverpool supporters cannot manage to put enough braincells together collectively to come up with their own songs so they have to take them from Rogers and Hammerstein and forbid anyone else from singing them?
I love Barbra since the mvie "Yentl" I was 22 yeras old than. Now I am 50 and love her voice, her talent and her sweetness to her fans. I love the fact she's a jewish although I am spanish, maybe native brailian...Well there isn't for sure so talented actress and singer as she.
Their will always be those who have success espcially the Jewish people. But Barbra is in a class of her own. No one can make me cry and humble me like her and her songs. So if you want to criticize her go ahead I will always buy her records and when I hae the money go to one concert, if only I could. I am dying of cancer and her songs and music lift me from my bed of anguish. God Bless you Barbara!
AWESOME.......

Something wonderful. I have yet to read anything terrible about her of her life. No perscription abuse. No time professionally lost due to something unexpected. No time in rehab. Not even plagerism.

@sherriffnoldie It's called ageing and unfortunately the greatest voice also must age, wither and die.
stevesg92 5 months ago
@stevesg92 I wouldn't say wither and die but this is not a strong Barbra performance. She sort of throws her voice at peak moments and fails to inspire throughout. It's also a dull arrangement. Most of Barbra's peers have also lost much of their vocal prowess--Diana Ross and Aretha to name just 2--but it's interesting to hear what remains of their talent. Skills like phrasing, interpretation of lyric, overall musicality, et al. never leave singers of this quality.

God bless America!

this song should only be sung by liverpool supporters

@moreton3 What a load of rubbish. This song is from one of the finest musicals to come out of Hollywood. I would guess that most liverpool fans don't know that , and they certainly dont know all the words.

@TheDADDYBAILEY i and many liverpool fans will knowthe origins of this song.the only musical i like is the one the kop perform every time liverpool play lol im not into the whole musical thing.......its for gay men to enjoy...have a nice day with your your bf lol

What the hell did you just say!!!!!!
skipper8257 6 months ago
@moreton3 Why, because the Liverpool supporters cannot manage to put enough braincells together collectively to come up with their own songs so they have to take them from Rogers and Hammerstein and forbid anyone else from singing them?

Do somebody know where is this performed?
Thank you Barbra!!!
