The CI can be removed and replaced. the problem when you get a replacement CI is that in many cases it looses it's effectiveness. We just studied this in our ASL class. This would really be bad for people who have not learned another form of communication besides just relying upon the CI.
My child is deaf and we feel it is far more important to have language at her fingertips and thus we're all learning ASL. If she wants she can have one when she's older if she qualifies.
Look, the surgery has too many risks for the child to not have a say. Cis should ONLY happen in children who are old enough to understand what they personally want. Not because it will make them 'fit in' with their family. When a person has a baby they are expected to adapt their lives around the child NOT the child adapt to them. And this was written by a hearing woman who was more welcomed by the deaf community than the hearing.
@abtruth That is hands down the stupidest thing I have ever read. The fact that you admit that it is sarcasm is even worse. You have an autistic child, and you're making jokes about it? Nice.
thats ridiculous.. by the time they are mature enough to make a decision for themselves the chances of them developing the skills necessary to participate normally in society are gone.
Its a parents obligation to do what is best for their child..
take your argument to its logical conclusion - don't give kids glasses for myopia, just let them fail at school and join the "blind culture"
if they come up with a cure to Autism i am certainly not going to give it to my son.. it would be a tragedy for him to miss out on the "Autistic culture"!!
@abtruth They are working hard to find a cure for autism. If they succeed, people like me and your son will no longer exist. Really it all comes down to Eugenics. They want to eliminate all people with disabilities. If you are born different enough, they want to make sure there are no more people like you.
@abtruth I don't understand how you can compare "Deaf culture" to "Autistic culture". Autism is a developmental disorder where as being deaf is just... well being deaf. Being deaf doesn't mean that one can't develop social skills normally. Also, your sarcasm is really awful
HEY! CI is not a sucker... its amazing! i mean people can decide for themselves. I have CI. Its amazing! i have CI for nine years. and i ABOSTLY LOVE IT! Well i think you guys shouldn't blame the CI. i mean its fine if some people want to stay deaf, or get a CI. i mean i made a choice nine years ago. and it works i can hear very well! its like my dream came true. SO DO NOT TALK BAD THINGS ABOUT CI!
And i dont think we should be saying deaf pride or hearing pride or what ever...because its things like that, that make us so segrigated. Instead we should say somtin like human pride..i dont know...but we should look at us as one not two groups
I saw a video and this deaf couple was STRICTLY against it and thought it was bad and she even said she would take her daughters baby away if she put an implant in her grandson. The question i have is what dose it matter? if you choose to get one great if not great to. it cant change u from being deaf, you will always be deaf and can show as much pride as you want. you will never loose deaf culture.
How can anyone who got CI when he/she was child know what it's like to be deaf and yet have deaf pride? I read somewhere that hearing people close their ears to image what it's like to be a deaf person, but it's myth. It takes years to develope special functions such as higher spatial skills, more chance of dreaming in color, far better periphereal visions, etc.
It is then up to you. It is up to the other deaf members of YOUR community to help that child have deaf pride...the implant is not perfect and can be romoved. The child will always be deaf period...he or she is not hearing with their ears by with a machiene. If the child dose not have deaf culture than it is the deaf communitys fault for not recignizing and showing that person what it
@dricedt Point of clairification... The CI cannot be removed or replaced once it dies in approx. 15 years. That is why many people get a CI on one ear, then years later (after it does not work as well) decide to have the surgery in the opposite ear. Now if you were speaking of the outter piece, that dan turn the device on and off then you are correct. Yes that will come off.
means to be deaf. They will still be deaf no matter what...like i said they are not hearing with their ears but with a machiene...show them how to hear with their eyes
hey, i've been learning asl for about a year now from my deaf teacher, and i've been reading this book called for hearing people only (yes i am hearing and i dont fully know deaf culture so if i make a mistake dont tear me apart ;] ) and i dont c the big deal of getting a implant. Of corse NOO deaf person should be told or forced to get one..but if the person chooses to get one then whats the big deal?
If the person is of legal age (or decisive age, if the decision is shared by the parents) chooses to get a cochlear implant, so be it. But parents implanting their young children who cannot choose for themselves are what chafes my chaps!
yes i understand that most cant. but there was a H.H girl in the same movie that said she wanted to hear everything and when her deaf community found out they were mad at her. And she was like 8.
You're talking about Sound and Fury, right? No one was mad at Heather (and she was 6, by the way). Peter's parents were mad at Peter and Nita. And Peter (Heather's dad) was uneasy about the idea, but Nita (Heather's mother) looked into it and tried to give the CI a fair chance. Besides, Heather is not what I'd consider "decisive age." She's young enough that her views and feelings about life will definitely change within a couple years.
but cant u still be part of their world AND experience a new one? because u'll never stop being deaf. It would be like the blind getting a implant in their eye so they can see. The other blind wouldnt turn on them and be mad because they wanted to c. Y wouldnt u encourage the person to try somthing new...NOT to abandon the deaf community but to expand their views of both worlds?
Didn't you hear the part in Sound and Fury where Shelby's mom said that Shelby had no idea she was deaf? She viewed herself as a hearing person. That's why I, at least, have a problem with it. I can't speak for the Deaf community, although I suspect that their feelings would be similar. Deafness is a way of life. You can't be blind and see at the same time. Besides that, blindness is a terrible example. Blindness is a handicap, Deafness is not.
see, this is what I'm talking about. The cult of the deaf. Deafness is not a handicap? You mean it's normal in nature? OK there. Deafness is a way of life. Get off your high horse. You aren't special. Some of those kids and their attitudes from Gaulledet really sickened me. Different "ranking" of deafness and deaf families. You're deaf, it's a handicap, get over it.
It isn't the deafness that brings the community together. Its the language. And like it or not, ASL is a language buddy. So you can take your closed minded hearing ass on out of here, go back to earth, and let the deaf do their thing. K?
Really? Tell that to family members of deaf people. I guess they're "not part of their world". Why in the hell would someone NOT want to hear? Your cult of deafness is astounding.
what about hearing aides? it's the same but no one is AGAINST hearing aides...CIs just help even more. Do you think the Deaf community is fkn awesome? YEA! Why would some one want to leave? They just want to be able to function better with hearing people. That's how they will get ahead in life, but they will still hold their Deaf community close.
You have no idea what its like being deaf, you nancy, boy would i like you to be deafened for 3 months on a trial, i lost my hearing at older age..so trying to learn sign language,Also would like you have tinnitus as well, and be muzzy headed, you really have no idea, and my guess is, that you dont work anyway, and dont pay taxes....and yes i ask for speech to text reporter..otherwise im lost..all deafened are deaf for different reasons, man you are well silly.....
Deaf power wat a joker!!!! already got a C.I and work perfectly well, get a life and stop been a deaf cunt who love collecting benefits and using my fucking tax
That is very interesting, i have cochlear when i was 5 years old because my parent choose for me to wear cochlear but that cochleaar won't destory deaf culture forever because i can sign to my deaf mates. i couldn't speach until i was 15 years old because i made a choose that i want to be part of the multi-culture not just as one culture. As always remember that i will be deaf forever.
I m concern that many deafies asking for more benefits and interpreter, using our tax money.. Cant you jus get a cochlear implant and live in a normal world where you can cope without support, i wear them and never need support at all..
WELL it dosen't matter if deaf people want to wear cochlear implant or not, but most deaf people dont want to because they want to show pride of their deafness. dont tell that woman to get cochlear implant! you dont fucking tell her that! ok. thanks

If a child WANTS a cochlear, that is completely different than the parents forcing it on the child before they are old enough to make a decision.

Because getting a cochlear implant is like telling the Deaf community you don't want to be a part of their world anymore.
