  • Bellissimo film, la più bella scena..

  • The final choral is Bach's St Matthew's Passion introduction, about how Jesus' crucifixion redempted the humanity. Idem, THX leaves a world where no hope is possible, climbs a ladder to the Light (Apotheosis) and merges with the Sun (Transcendance).

  • My God

  • 1:10

  • , we still see.

  • I had this on tape once, only in the ending here THX see's the destroyed city and sky for the first time, and on VHS cut the sun took-up most of the space and THX was also much closer on the tv screen. Plus no credits either = (when added, I think totally takes - away from the flawlessness of final rapturous scene).

Is this mans destiny? For the elite would love it to turn out this way. But we humans are lost yet.

  • They don't make film sets like this anymore. It's all fake looking CGI.

  • @scottvska but its all so much more efficient. ;p

  • Excellent soundtrack

  • Get Bach's St. Matthew Passion from the library - the opening chorus is played here - probably about that third of it. The closing chorus is also just beautiful. I recommend the Klemperer-conducted recording.

  • is this the full student film?

  • @jimbolimbo369

no, it is the movie inspired by his student film

you can watch it on youtube : "thx 1138 4eb electronic labyrinth"

  • wouldn't it be cool if he gets to the top and discovers a strip mall with a target, walmart, starbucks and mcdonalds??? and the surface is inhabited with republicans that worship sarah palin. if i was THX 1138 and that happened to me, i'd go back down and look for LUH 3417

  • What an awesome ending, and what an awesome message... that some things, like freedom and personal sovereignty, may be more important than just continuing to suck air and metabolize food. That maybe there is something in the human spirit that no totalitarian system can ever conquer. A fitting early effort for one of movie history's GREATEST directors, IMHO.

  • Three best sci fi movies? This film belongs on the same list that has Plan 9 from outer space.

Films like 2001 and Alien are outright classics, everyone has heard of them, hell, even stuff like Logans Run is far out of this films league

  • @Stantzs So because not everyone has heard of this movie, makes it less of a classic? The things that are occuring in THX, are happening NOW, 40-years later. Talk about way ahead of its time. The acting, directing, and social commentaries are way more in touch which everything now.

You don't see that in Logan's Run. Sorry.

  • @twooh82 No, but something you do see in Logans run and those other movies is good storytelling and exiting editing and camera work.

This is just slow, boring , plodding shit, it happens to be slow , boring , plodding, shit that had some kind of social metaphor, but no one cares because it's such a terrible film.

  • @Stantzs Good storytelling? I highly disagree. I thought it had a great concept, but in terms of directing, definitely not. It was full of plot holes and a lot of places in the film felt unreal.

No one cares? I care. So do so many others. You can't say it was slow and boring, and then just walk away feeling justified. You need to justify your reasoning as a critique. What did you feel was 'show, boring, plodding shit'?

  • i watched it in EAHD

  • One of the the most amazing endings!!

  • I'm a French fan of George Lucas and I think the Italian version is very interesting. It makes the movie look like one of those left radical, anti-establishment 50's-70's Italian films (Pasolini or else).

  • It's so simple yet this is why its so genius

  • I felt this movie was too similar to Logan's Run

  • @pdynamics1 You do realize that Logan's Run came out in '76 while this came out in the early 70's, right?

  • @briank383 the book of logan's run was out in 1967 before thx

  • It's one of the Most important and amazing ending of cinema story...

    ouch !

  • Now you see, where the inspiration on Terminator 2 liquid metal killer cop came from?

  • it would have been such a bitch if the ladder just stopped before they got to the surface.......a cost effective way of stopping escape i think.

  • I would like to know what's the recording of the great Passion selon St-Mathieu.

  • Best science fiction movies, from best to least best are,

    bladerunner,

star trek the motion picture (im not relly into star trek but this film kicked ass),

    and THX

  • Powerful scene. This always makes me hold my breath!

  • GEORGE ORWEL 1994 ;-)

  • @SELECTER73

George Orwell "1984" made in 1948

  • ops! 84 :p

  • ops! orwell...1984 (i have writing in the dark :-p )

  • It's J.S.Bach: the opening of the "St. Matthew Passion." I don't know which recording Lucas/Schifrin used. There are LOTS of them. Maybe this is one by Karl Richter. Do a YouTube search for "Bach - St. Matthew Passion BWV 244 (Karl Richter, 1971) - 1/22" .

  • The white room was some sort of institution for those who astray from the norms of the films society. It was used as a means of therapy for those who broke from the routine.

  • Can someone explain to me what happened to LUH and what was that white room with the people in it some sort of prison?

  • i'd guess that LUH (and their baby) were killed.

either that, or only LUH was killed and the baby was given LUH's name, and was what THX saw in the jar when he was looking up LUH's name in the computer (when he and the hologram were running from the police).

and yeah, the white room was a prison.

  • LUH was recycled and a new human was given her old number and prefix.

  • 2:28 a little que dot for the end of the film, something Bluray doesnt show on its so called perfect format. So he was THX cool.

  • Qualcosa di veramente grandioso. Ci permette di sognare un mondo diverso, migliore più umano. Ci induce alla speranza del nostro essere uomini.

  • The first movie I ever saw with Robert Duvall. He is a freaking geniusn

  • la escena me recordó al final del opening de naruto "rocks" xDD

  • Tout simplement extraordinaire!

    George lucas for ever!^^

QUEL musique à la fin.... o_o La meilleur fin que jamais je n'ai vu

  • genial genial movie... george lucas genial..

  • Kommt Ihr Tochter, from St. Matthaus Passion composed by J.S. Bach and conducted by Lalo Schiffrin (Who composed the theme for mission impossible!)

  • why does he not move away from the hole he came out of? One small step and he is back in the underworld.

  • In the story "The Machine Stops" which is similar to this, the air underground is thicker than the surface air an pools around the hole, so he can breath there but nowhere else.

  • THX is a great movie. But in the end i only have 1 question when THX escapes the CIty/Underworld : Now what? You are standing there in broad sunlight with no food, no bed to sleep in and above all : no help from other people, friends or family. I am sure that if he knew what to find on the surface, he staid down...

  • well i think that he choosed to go to the surface and maybe even certan death to be absolutely free. i dont think he would have stayed down.

and the fact that you can see birds flying up there shows, that it is possible to live out there, and maybe there are some other people who escapet fromt he city. we dont know

  • would you return to the world that was his life? the control, the manipulation, the lack of freedom? i would rather die in the sun then live a life like that. whatever thx did after he arrived on the surface is something we as movie goers need to discover for ourselves

  • well, he had no help from others, or friends or family down there either :(

  • who to say there are not other living on the surface, if you notice birds fly by which means there is life on the surface perhaps enough that it could sustain this man.

  • This movie is just propaganda to let us know that if we try to escape our prisoner/enslavement society matrix all we will gain is darkness,a lifeless barren landscape, and death. Resistance is futile. Prepare to be absorbed by the Borg hive.

  • Disagree.

In this final scene, as soon as the main character jumps up in the surface he sees a bird flying (1:03-1:06), which represents the hope of something beautiful.

  • Beautiful ending haunts my imagination what he experienced next, need sequel! (a good one)

  • @Thx1138d He probably died from radiation, thirst or starvation. But does it matter? He died a FREE man. That's the message of this movie... that maybe there are things more important than security, comfort, or just being alive. That's what I took away from it anyway.

  • Actually no. In the book he he spotted some people getting water from a stream. Wished the movie could have showed that.

  • @bjggjb

Birds fly between him and the sun in the end.

He has a chance of survival. 8)

  • @ivlfounder Unless it's them flying things from Pitch Black.

  • @bjggjb He didn't die. There are birds flying for pete's sake.

  • @georkarpkd

Actually that wasn't what Lucas had planned. He intended THX to escape from the totalitarian society only to end up on the surface where he was free but in a dead wasteland.

In post production Lucas noticed the bird, and considered removing it, but realized it actually gave a slight hope life could exist outside.

It was a complete chance occurance, which never was his intention, say like Ridley Scott's Bladerunner in which the dove flies off into the sky.

  • For me, the ending with THX just standing there is the same as the part of "Tears in the rain" in Blade Runner.

    The silence is deafening.

As the sun sets, I'd like to think THX is astonishd by the remanents of what was once a major city. Just simply dumb founded by what it is he see's that no other person living in that jail cell other than the computer system, could have possibly known to have existed.

  • classic

  • This would be Al gore's dream world for us. The chrome robots were offspring of Gore himself.

  • Al Gore is only the puppet of the greatest master--His wife Tipper

  • What is the song?

  • It's the opening of Bach's St. Matthew Passion.

  • Thank you.

  • i would have preferred the sun to be rising.

  • That's up for individual interpretation.

He seemingly escaped into a barren desert, and we know he can't go back.

  • DUDE YES IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS

  • always remembers me @ Plato's Cave Allegory...

    such a great movie.

  • Yes the Individual comes out from the Collective and finds a whole new world ! But none of the others understand till they come to their own enlightenment.

  • so,what happens when a entity is succesfull in releasing itself from the cage...uncapable and unadapted to live in the conditions that surpases the level of his conciousness...in this case u have to be happy of your freedom, but u also must accept the consequences such as death..

  • You rise to meet the freedom or you fade to black

  • definately one of the best films of the 20th century

  • sorry, i tried watching this film, I just couldn't get into it......

  • i agree with you on this and 2001 one being the best in sci fi

they simply cannot be compared to any other films like them

they completely stand out on their own and this scene is a testament to this films greatness and beauty

  • Duvall is actually crawling around on the floor, not climbing up. This was filmed in the uncompleted section of the SanFrancisco subway system. George Lucas just figured that there would be no way to tell and he was right.

The soundtrack is Bach's Matthew's passion.

  • I can see THX-1138 as kind of taking place in the Star Wars universe, but the confusion I have is, did raising his children changed him drastically that much from the way he conceived characters in American Graffiti and the first Star Wars to what he contributed in the form of the prequels?!?

  • well his daughter is responsible for Jar Jar binks....that says enough lol

  • I'd argue against that, but you may be right about it, Nebulae87. ha ha ha

  • haha i'm serious. I read it in my nerdy STAR WARS TRIVIA book hahahahahaha. Not a joke by the way. BUt ya....it said in there the idea for jar jar binks came from his daughter.

  • Dang, thanks for that information, Neb.

  • Here's my opinion , ready world.

The original music track with the close-up of the sun - it's kinda cooler.

  • The intention of the comments made by me were to simply us to reconsider how sci-fi can effectively address our contemporary situations even if they were made 40 or 60 years ago.

Long live H.G. Wells, Herman Melville and George Lucas!

  • the sun setting traditionally represents a new day, hope, enlightenment....... Good Morning America logo is an example.

The man is free because he can see the sun without a monitor or androids or George Bush on his tail!!!!

one also needs to consider the environment this film was made in and the millions of US soldiers and innocent people that died in Vietnam. This and Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver address the Government repression and disillusionment of the time. Much like today!

  • Um, this movie was made well before George Bush was president. But it was a cheap and not too crafty way to explain the ending and dragging our ex-pres into it. You could have assimilated government repression & disillusionment with Obama as well.

  • Indeed, the concept of metaphor is one that can be applied not to a single generation.

The slight mention of George Bush is an example that prompted a response as to the origin and date of this films intent when the film was in fact addressing a similar state of repression in the 1960s.

  • I don't understand this ending. It's very dramatic with the music and the sunset and all, but I don't get what it is trying to convey (pardon my ignorance).

  • He's finally free.

  • That's all?

  • Haven't you seen the movie?

It's so dramatic because he's free. For the whole life he had to live below ground level in a state that controls people. The technology overtook humans. Now people are drugged and they live to work like small gear wheels in a huge machine.

Conclusion: We're human, we're no machines. Everyone of us is individual. So THX discontinues drugs. He generates emotions, he wants to get out and see the world with all its nature.

  • the sun setting traditionally represents a new day, hope, enlightenment....... Good Morning America logo is an example.

The man is free because he can see the sun without a monitor or androids or George Bush on his tail!!!!

  • Everyone look up DARPA who created MMEA Multiple Micro Electrode Array which is controlled by the software BMI Brain Machine Interface and realize this technology blows RFID and Digital Angel out of the water. It's far superior to where it can remotely control a person's emotions - fear, euphoria, depression -- plus pleasure and pain.

  • this is ART, not the childish and new Special Effects added by George Lucas recently

The SMART, ELEGANT AND ORIGINAL MASTERPIECE...

    thanks veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy much

  • its all time the best, with some other. for ex, omega man, zardoz...

  • is that bach,s music???

  • Yes, it's the opening movement of The Passion According To Saint Matthew.

  • oops!

  • preferisco la parodia... Calling All Girls dei Queen! XD anke se il video nn ha un significato particolare... w i Queen... rendono sempre tutto + divertente^^

  • one of my favorite film ending...great

  • This movies is just GREAT!!

    Grazie...I love it!

  • Saw this movie for the first time this week. Wow...i enjoyed it..and that ending! There is literally light at the end of the tunnel...whatever obstacle there maybe be.

  • I couldn't stop rewinding this clip and rewatching it again and again. This has to be one of the most beautiful images in cinema history. Not to mention the italian dubbing was excellent, they do the best job. Awe inspiring.

  • you mean usa chick's mouth. We also have central America and south America. Cheers

  • I put it in italian cause it's the only one I could cut...I don't have the original divx...anyway italian dubbers are the best in the world and the climax is not the words but the final image...undoubtly one of the best images in the movies' history

  • @stefanobrandini

    fuck your country!

  • Why would anybody be so stupid as to upload this in a language nobody but a tiny spec of the internet would understand.. English people, ENGLISH.

  • u r an ignorant imbecile.

  • y? I mean, I'm not an English speaker myself, but I would never upload a dubbed video because it looks and sounds horrible. You should subtitle films from other languages. People don't cara bout your special language, they just want to understand what the hell is being said, what's so imbicilic about that?

  • hmmmm, ok. I assumed you were an self-centered American. (I'm an american.) So please accept my apology. The point here though was the visual imagery, the other considerations are far less compelling IMO.

  • Yeah well, I might have been a bit harsh. But the dubbing of programs is just completely incomprehensible to me. They subtitle everything on tv here (Holland) but whenever there's a good movie on French or German tv (which we can receive) you can bet on it to be dubbed and there's absolutely no point in watching it then, it's raping good acting if you ask me.

  • I appreciate learning where you're coming from. This has been an interesting conversation. I know what you mean about bad dubbing. As a side note, my ex-wife refused to see foreign films because she couldn't read subtitles (the only way a foreign film get theatrical release in the states.)

  • Thank you, I agree. As for your ex-wife and everybody else, I can assure you that reading subtitles is only a matter of getting used to. It is an automata to everybody in this country.

  • from this his first feature all the way through to the brilliant prequel trilogy, Lucas is one of the most remarkable film artists of our time...I love his work

  • Isn't there another vid in Youtube with the ending sequence? This is the only one I've seen.

  • It's Italian.

  • What language is this translated into? I want to say that it's Spanish, but i might be wrong.

  • I agree 100%! 1138 is my all-time favorite movie and is George Lucas' best film. The best thing about the movie is the sound...so sterile and electronic--a virtual environment that Huxley would be proud of. The film is replete with emotion and symbolism and is as relevant on where our world is going today as it was almost 40 years ago. Pity that Lucas wasted his visionary talent on SW prequels and should have created more masterpieces like THX.

  • Lucus was 23 at the time, they stopped funding him, the movie really was filmed in 1969, then it was released in 71... He was an independent at the time who dealt with film moguls who didn't understand his work and his vision. That's why he didn't do anymore stuff life this.

  • Yeah, and the studio that initially released it forcibly cut 5 minutes from the film... would be interesting to know which 5 minutes. This is my FAVORITE FILM of all time!

  • I have to say that's a very good little bit of dubbing there at the beginning, the Italian actress's voice matches up to the American chick's mouth almost perfectly IMO.

  • We are 138!!!

  • Grande nel descrivere così bene il dominio sulle menti che subiamo già oggi , eccezionali certi monologhi testimoni di un mondo non più umano .

  • LUH 3417 is THX 3417 that is the crossover network system, that's in THX cinemas.
