Wells still managed to hand the US runners their arse after the Olympics and in the golden sprints a year later. Everyone keeps going on that he only won because the US athletes weren't there. If they were such hot favorites how come they only ran times in the US Olympic trials comparible to what Wells and Leonard ran in the final here. The US athletes wouldn't have got close to Wells or Mennea in the 200 at these games either.
EVERYONE seems to care and you do too or you wouldn't have bothered to even reply to me. Reply again and deny it - the more you post, the more you contradict yourself.
@CaneFu Well all those African Americans you are talking about turned up weeks later at different meets and Wells handed them there ass , So your Troll post even fails at trolling , How sad are you you can't even troll properly
Allan Wells never even came close to running at world record speed. In fact, the last time a white guy held the world record for 100 meters was in 1960 - 52 years ago - by Armin Hary with 10.0, his record only stood for 24 days & was broken by a Canadian sprinter of African descent. No white guy has even come close to the world record since.
My original point being that Allan Wells is only remembered & idolized by some simply because he was white, not because he was great.
The same thing was said about tennis until the Williams sisters came along. The same thing was said about golf until Tiger Woods came along...
and in the 2008 Olympics we had our first African-American gold medalist in swimming, Cullen Jones. My guess is that in 50-60 years black swimmers will also dominate. African-Americans have been denied access to these other sports until recently.
Maybe you can still have ice hockey - I hear black people don't like cold weather.
@CaneFu Wouldn't necessarily agree that Afro Americans/Caribbeans have been denied access to these sports. Anthony Nesty won a gold in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
YES, African-Americans have most definitely been denied access to these other sports by lack of training facilities for them in their neighborhoods. Most Olympic athletes start training as children and a place to run or play basketball has usually been accessible to inner city youth. Rare is the Olympic pool, golf course, hockey rink, or tennis court in the ghetto!!! As African-Americans are able to move into the the suburbs so will their exposure to these lesser sports.
Why did you even post this? Anthony Nesty is NOT African / American but was born in Trinidad and moved to the Republic of Suriname when he was 5 months old. If you actually read my posts you would see that I was talking about African / Americans being denied training opportunities in certain sports. You must be one of those racists that lumps all people with dark skin - i.e. nonwhite, together.
The weather conditions endured by Allan Wells (and the seven other sprinters who competed in that race in Moscow) were APPALLING, as a matter of fact. Therefore, one cannot conclude - from Wells' winning time (which was RELATIVELY slow) - that he was not a great sprinter.
I believe that even the great Valeriy Borzov - at the peak of his sprinting career, in 1972 - would have been unable been able to dip under 10.20 seconds in those inclement weather conditions.
"The weather conditions endured by Allan Wells were APPALLING...Therefore, one cannot conclude - from Wells winning time that he was not a great sprinter.
YES, ONE CAN. Wells career best of 10.11 was more than 2 tenths of a second off the world record. Ask yourself this one question...
If Wells was not white, would you even remember his name or have bothered to watch this video? We both know the answer to that is a big NO.
Gold! Fact - you beat who turns up and then the ones who don't a few week later as Wells did. A Scottish, British and European sprinting legend. He beat them all in 80-81. Besides the US didn't trun up because they were scared their Hoops team would lose as per 1972.
@4246theone dont forget eric liddell. if it wasnt for the sabbath many moons ago, the english man Abrahams wud have a silver in his cabinet lol. can you imagine liddell and wells in this race - gauranteed gold and silver for scotland lol
this was great to watch , you cant take it away from Alan his 10.25 was worth a faster time given the conditions and he ran 10.11 in his QF slowing down which some say was worth around 10.05 ,even with the US not going, Silvio Leonard the runner up was one of the greats having won the pan am 100m in 77 and 79 beating the americans and in Alans 1st race after the games in Cologne, Alan beat the amercans including Stanley Floyd in 10.19 , great stuff
@barnabyfraser Actually, an American sprinter called Jim Sandford also returned a slightly quicker time (over 100 metres) than Wells that year. However, I am inclined to think that the big Scotsman would still have won the Gold medal in that event at the Moscow Olympic Games, even if Mr Floyd and Mr Sandford had been competing against him. From what I remember, Floyd was an eighteen-year-old kid back in 1980, and - for all his natural ability as a sprinter - I don't think that he would
@barnabyfraser [Continuing on from my previous 'post' about Mr Allan Wells]: have had the mental strength (at that young age) required to produce his very best form in an Olympic final. Running the 100 in a time close to ten seconds flat in a relatively unimportant race (in your home country) is one thing ..... replicating that perfomance in an Olympic final - under intense pressure - is a different matter altogether.

Hmmm...
For you white guys praising Alan Wells performance ponder this...
1972 the best African-American sprinters don't show up and a white guy (Borzov) wins the 100 meters.
1980 the best African-American sprinters don't show up and a white guy wins the 100 meters.
Since that time the best sprinters of African descent show up every Olympics and NO white guy ever wins a 100 meters again for the next 32 years.
What could that possibly mean? Draw your own conclusions...
And I AM a white guy.

How many white Olympic 100 meter champs have there been in the last 30 years?

Alan Wells also had the slowest winning time since 1956.

@CaneFu White guys are to swimming what Black guys are to sprinting. They are far the superior in that field of sport.
