  • Just a great over looked song of the 60's~Going to pick up the cd~Thanks!

  • Love the drumming / needs to be loud.

  • Wow I never heard this band before, I was looking for some t.v show and this song came up. Btw this song sounds awesome and going to look up their other songs.

  • One of my favourites via an 80s psychedelic revival album. Great to hear them posted. Fab groovy baby.

  • Very nice. If you like this you might dig my own band on my channel too :)

  • Heard this for the first time this evening. It is very much in the style of most of the soundtrack of my teen years. The 2 people who didn't like it I suspect they weren't youngsters of this period but I could be wrong. Sorry to state the obvious but not all songs are liked by all people. For us baby boomers who were brought up on this type of music you only have to hear the first 3 or 4 measures to know exactly what these guys were trying to do. May this spirit reign forever.

  • Original albums in good condition are worth up to £800.

  • The Open Mind!!! Where have you been all my life? This is really something and I really love the sound from the 60s. No samples only rare, raw and honest garage rock. I get the same feeling as when I first discovered a Scandinavian band called THE ZETTLERS! Chek Up Their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". What a bloody drive. And ......... the recordings where made 1965. Totally fucking amazing

  • I heard this on Sounds of the 60's at work yesterday morning....what a totally bloody awesome song!!! Good old Radio 2 for introducing me to this wonderful little gem :)

  • This is mega........where has it been all my life?

  • the music went down hill in the 80's. only the 60's and 70's had the most original stuff like this song

  • this kinda has an Iron Butterfly meets Black Sabbath appeal to it

  • now i know where do qotsa come from

  • nearly wet myself when I heard this on that new channel four comedy thing

  • This track once blew my mind long ago, and my mind has yet to recover.

  • Very intresting......

  • just great...!!

  • is the drummer playing with two kick pedals ?

  • @mikebott it sounds like a delay effect on the kick

  • @zombiesarebad67 could be, but then a lot of sources online posit this as the first double bass song. on the other hand, tony williams doing that in jazz a few years before this

  • This should have been a major hit.

  • Excellent. An open mind indeed

  • thw only onwa who took the time or had the cash to make music. :RICH PRIVATE SCOOL KIDZ:

  • Very cool tune!

  • On the Philips record label--also famous for Blue Cheer, and "light bulbs"!

  • Magic Potion - The Open Mind [Putney, London, England] - 1969 - "A British Psychedelic GEM. Hot guitar, drums. "Magic Potion" is unarguably their greatest moment." - The Open Mind (Sunbeam Records)-2006.

NOTE: Review excerpt by Jon "mojo" Mills (almusic):

"With a singing style rooted in the freakbeat era, rather than the operatic tenor screams hard rock ushered in, and acidic duel guitars, heavier than those of a typical psychedelic act,"...

  • @mikekadas I totally like this fellow's singing style! What a classy voice, sort of reminds me of James Bond as a rock singer! Or a deeper version of Rod Evans!

  • @notfragile33 I agree about that Rod Evans-thing. A lot of vocalists sound like him (although one of those in my mind was a singer before Rod)... wait, Rod's Deep Purple's first singer, right?

  • @GuyWithNoName67 Yes, he was--the singer on the first three DP albums, the cat who sang "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman". He had a lovely-60s sounding voice, a cross between David Cassidy and Elvis Presley (and, sadly, the reason he was out of the group in favour of Ian Gillan, when they moved into more "Heavy Metal" territory. I couldn't imagine him singing "Highway Star" just as much as it sounds weird to hear Ian Gillan sing "Hush"!)

  • @notfragile33 Oh good. I'm not the only one who thinks he sounds like Elvis. Especially on Hush, which is something I first realized when while listening to it on the radio, someone suggested I was listening to Elvis.

  • @GuyWithNoName67 You should check out the video on You Tube of Deep Purple from 1968 performing "Hush"! Evans has all of Elvis's gyrations, together with David Cassidy's looks!

  • great drummer ,-9

  • a fantastic concotion

  • this shit is heavy for its time. i LOVE it!

  • I don't know much about this band (it was a "pandora radio" introduction), and even though the singer sounds like an older fellow, I like his voice--but the drummer is an absolute ANIMAL! I hope he is still drumming, there's a lot of younger bands these days that could use a talent like his!

  • @notfragile33 he is still dumming, he's my dad !

  • @BlueFlagSW6 hi dad.. LOL

  • @notfragile33 he is still dumming, he's my dad !

  • @BlueFlagSW6 Well, tell him to keep on rockin' and never stop! And I hope he has the same energy as he showed on this track 40 years ago! Such a syncopated rhythm I've only heard from one other drummer--the drummer from a band called Frijid Pink (maybe he remembers them, too?)

  • Good rock from the 60s. Obscure band but still the music rocks. I love it.

  • my grandma is the sister of the keyboard player

  • These guys are awesome... It's hard to believe Jon Anderson of Yes was ever in this group. If anyone knows if there are any recordings with him, please let me know...

  • hmm I might have to listen to this song if I ever trip on acid again.

  • caswell berry

  • Magic Potion - The Open Mind [Putney, London, England] - 1969 - "Psych-rock STANDOUT. Hot guitar, drums." - Rubble Volume 1: The Psychedelic Snarl-2003.

  • take a sip it sounds good

  • DIRTY

    FLOWERS

    ON DA

    BLOCKK

  • when i listened to this 2 people had tagged disliked, are they deaf? what the fuck do they listen to? this is brilliant. your grandad is a drum god.

  • @steveavison The bass player sounds like Lemmy and guitar sounds like Dave Brock, how could this band sound so great? Check out Hawkwind's 'Brainstorm' (1973) to compare! The only thing wrong with The open Mind is that their tracks are not over sixteen minutes long! Make that an hour! Has your grandad got any old jamming or practice tapes? Bet that they would go down very well if remastered, send Brian Mathews a copy, he played your grandad's band this morning on BBC Radio 2!

  • Superb freakbeat.

  • This tune is an absolute killer!!

  • That's good rock.

  • que temón

  • Luv this tune, its a garage rock classic,I played it on my Halloween show.

  • Well, looks like the apparent mentioning in "Classic Rock" Magazine did a bit in boosting the view count on this clip,WOW!!!Is great, many are now discovering this talented & HIGHLY UNDERRATED group.'tenmantaylor' and 'cj1401',would be great to hear any good memories or stories from the band members from this era?Thhanks again 'odorono77'for placing this true gem of a recording on YouTube for all to view-listen to and enjoy!

  • i made a human skin trousers to the guitar.

  • Awesome band!

  • Super! Just read about this band in "Classic Rock" magazine.

Well it's great. They really rock!

  • ACID

  • iv'e never drank magic potions, but if its anything like this epic composition ill down a few and trip........

  • @RubySkull888 You Said It Man,For Sure!!This group and track really reminds me of another UK group Stray and thier track "All In Your Mind",well worth checking out if are liking the presented material here! Thanks for the great posting!

  • Awesome sound

  • Hawkwind's song Brainstorm really "borrowed" a lot from this--maybe this is the original "Space Ritual"?

  • Such a great song - why can't I download on itunes?!

  • Stoner rock and psychedelic rock is such a great combo. Add acid rock and this music would be illegal.

  • Holy shit @ 1:47

    So dope

  • I'm going to be playing this with my mates. Love this track

  • my great grandma was one of their groupies

  • greetings from planet zamba , this good :P

  • I feel fine!!!

  • First heard this one on....where else? The "Nuggets II" box set from Rhino. There's some early metal double bass going down there at the end of this song that just flat out ROCKS! These guys and Andromeda are two early British psychedelic/pre-metal bands that should be better known!

  • My grandad is the drummer :)

  • @cj1401 Realy!! Sick

  • @cj1401 NICE

  • Yet another brilliant gem from the era.

  • Comment removed

  • @cj1401

do you know how old he was when they recorded this? jw, thanks

  • @cj1401 ..To paraphrase one of our fav historical figures.."When your grandson asks you what you did in the sixties..at least you won't have to say.."Well... I shoveled xxxx in Louisiana. " ..nice work!!

  • @cj1401 shadwell.tripod.com/openmind.jpg

  • so cool song!!

  • osiris-feed the need :P

  • @skate8md wait who skated to this in that vid? i wanted to use this! not fair

  • "HOW DO YOU FEEL"...........

  • A solid psychedelic rocker! Swims around your head all day. I find myself singing it in the shower all the time now.

  • this is amazing

  • For me, this is the most perfect british heavy psych track...

  • If Iggy and the Stooges made a pop record, this would be it. Dig that Fun House guitar. This is quite the group. Why the frog didn't they make it?

  • the lead singer is alive and well, living in Vancouver BC!

  • I work with the bassist from this band!

  • he's alive?!?! considering LSD probably played a huge part in thier lives im doubly impressed

  • Really? That's cool.

  • i was just wondering if he still plays or if he is in a band or anything

  • Whew! I was trippin on this tune (an I wasnt even takin anything)...

    :D

  • Thats the best kind of trip. :D

  • Awesome song.

I really love the version of Liquid vision(German psychedelic rock band) as well

  • FUCKING QUALITY. IT'S ON NUGGETS 2

  • Been meaning to pick that up. Have the first Nuggets boxed set, and it's awesome. Is Nuggets II as equally awesome?

  • Yes I would definately recommend it. I have both nuggets box sets and I play them ALL the time in the car!

  • Nuggets 2 is actually better, from a technical standpoint at least. The musicianship and production values are superior. I know that's not really the point of Nuggets though.

  • Check out the Damned's version live in Manchester!! ...also superb!!

  • DOES ANYONE HAVE THE LYRICS??????

  • My friends cover this in thier band, i can ask the singer if you like?

  • it would be great

  • ive asked for them, might take a while for the singer to give them to me but i'll send them in a message to ya when they've come through

  • The year was 1969

  • What year is this. Reminds me of Hawkwind.

  • this is on the ALBUM THE OPEN MIND AND THE HEAVY NUGGETS COMPILATION 1968 TO 1973.

Anyway this song is balls out rock music.

  • A great song. The lead singer insists that he feels fine, yet there is a strongly malevolent and dark undercurrent that becomes more apparent as the song progresses. Is he trying to convince the others that he is feeling fine or is he trying to reassure himself? Could be interpreted as either a pro-drug song or an anti-drug song.

  • pro drug. its obvious they took acid. and are fond of its effects

  • dont do drugs.

    lmao jp.

this song is the best one ever.

  • acid drenched song..one of my all time favorites

  • great reviews!! hi, phil fox, the drummer still going stong. band all in diffrent parts of the world now!!

There was a big article about the band in Record Collecter no: 288 Aug 2003, for anybody that is intrested!!

  • You guys were were locked in big time the day you laid this down!

  • killer track!!

opening reminds me of "I Wanna Be Your Dog" -which cann only be a GOOD thing!!

    nice post!

    Lee

    Liverpool Mods.

  • i dont find to download it ! how i can find??

  • you can find this on nuggets volume 2. very cool stuff.

  • I got their c.d. reissue from tower records on the web. The whole c.d. is excellent. These guys even dressed ahead of their time. It is more like heavy metal before there was heavy metal, with a psychedelic twist. Double bass drums, heavy acid-laden guitars, crazy lyrics......they had it all. The c.d. will cost you around $20 u.s. dollars.

  • Another great rocker from the 60's psychedelic era that unfortunately because of it's perceived content got little or no radio airplay in the US. Thanks to YouTube we can now hear this song in all its acid-tinged glory.

  • sundazed reissued this on cd a couple years back...domestically too.

  • What are psychedelic drugs?

  • seriously

  • the work of the DEVIL

  • Yes, dear - anything you can't understand you consign to the devil. Makes things easier, doesn't it?

  • Okay duhhhh.Thanks for the reply you're not a cow,or a robot

  • what?

  • Such an amazing song!

The record is impossible to find.

Wish there was actual footage of them somewhere.

  • They seemed to be preoccupied with psychedelic drugs, but what the heck, they sounded great! A very under-rated band, and their material is extremely hard to get as well.

  • take a drink from my magic potiontell me do you still feel fine

  • Ace.

  • well tripping

  • Ohhh nice one

When I searched for this I really didn't think I'd find owt

    Cheers
