Wow I never heard this band before, I was looking for some t.v show and this song came up. Btw this song sounds awesome and going to look up their other songs.
Heard this for the first time this evening. It is very much in the style of most of the soundtrack of my teen years. The 2 people who didn't like it I suspect they weren't youngsters of this period but I could be wrong. Sorry to state the obvious but not all songs are liked by all people. For us baby boomers who were brought up on this type of music you only have to hear the first 3 or 4 measures to know exactly what these guys were trying to do. May this spirit reign forever.
The Open Mind!!! Where have you been all my life? This is really something and I really love the sound from the 60s. No samples only rare, raw and honest garage rock. I get the same feeling as when I first discovered a Scandinavian band called THE ZETTLERS! Chek Up Their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". What a bloody drive. And ......... the recordings where made 1965. Totally fucking amazing
I heard this on Sounds of the 60's at work yesterday morning....what a totally bloody awesome song!!! Good old Radio 2 for introducing me to this wonderful little gem :)
@zombiesarebad67 could be, but then a lot of sources online posit this as the first double bass song. on the other hand, tony williams doing that in jazz a few years before this
Magic Potion - The Open Mind [Putney, London, England] - 1969 - "A British Psychedelic GEM. Hot guitar, drums. "Magic Potion" is unarguably their greatest moment." - The Open Mind (Sunbeam Records)-2006.
NOTE: Review excerpt by Jon "mojo" Mills (almusic):
"With a singing style rooted in the freakbeat era, rather than the operatic tenor screams hard rock ushered in, and acidic duel guitars, heavier than those of a typical psychedelic act,"...
@mikekadas I totally like this fellow's singing style! What a classy voice, sort of reminds me of James Bond as a rock singer! Or a deeper version of Rod Evans!
@notfragile33 I agree about that Rod Evans-thing. A lot of vocalists sound like him (although one of those in my mind was a singer before Rod)... wait, Rod's Deep Purple's first singer, right?
@GuyWithNoName67 Yes, he was--the singer on the first three DP albums, the cat who sang "Hush" and "Kentucky Woman". He had a lovely-60s sounding voice, a cross between David Cassidy and Elvis Presley (and, sadly, the reason he was out of the group in favour of Ian Gillan, when they moved into more "Heavy Metal" territory. I couldn't imagine him singing "Highway Star" just as much as it sounds weird to hear Ian Gillan sing "Hush"!)
@notfragile33 Oh good. I'm not the only one who thinks he sounds like Elvis. Especially on Hush, which is something I first realized when while listening to it on the radio, someone suggested I was listening to Elvis.
@GuyWithNoName67 You should check out the video on You Tube of Deep Purple from 1968 performing "Hush"! Evans has all of Elvis's gyrations, together with David Cassidy's looks!
I don't know much about this band (it was a "pandora radio" introduction), and even though the singer sounds like an older fellow, I like his voice--but the drummer is an absolute ANIMAL! I hope he is still drumming, there's a lot of younger bands these days that could use a talent like his!
@BlueFlagSW6 Well, tell him to keep on rockin' and never stop! And I hope he has the same energy as he showed on this track 40 years ago! Such a syncopated rhythm I've only heard from one other drummer--the drummer from a band called Frijid Pink (maybe he remembers them, too?)
These guys are awesome... It's hard to believe Jon Anderson of Yes was ever in this group. If anyone knows if there are any recordings with him, please let me know...
Magic Potion - The Open Mind [Putney, London, England] - 1969 - "Psych-rock STANDOUT. Hot guitar, drums." - Rubble Volume 1: The Psychedelic Snarl-2003.
@steveavison The bass player sounds like Lemmy and guitar sounds like Dave Brock, how could this band sound so great? Check out Hawkwind's 'Brainstorm' (1973) to compare! The only thing wrong with The open Mind is that their tracks are not over sixteen minutes long! Make that an hour! Has your grandad got any old jamming or practice tapes? Bet that they would go down very well if remastered, send Brian Mathews a copy, he played your grandad's band this morning on BBC Radio 2!

First heard this one on....where else? The "Nuggets II" box set from Rhino. There's some early metal double bass going down there at the end of this song that just flat out ROCKS! These guys and Andromeda are two early British psychedelic/pre-metal bands that should be better known!
@cj1401 ..To paraphrase one of our fav historical figures.."When your grandson asks you what you did in the sixties..at least you won't have to say.."Well... I shoveled xxxx in Louisiana. " ..nice work!!

Nuggets 2 is actually better, from a technical standpoint at least. The musicianship and production values are superior. I know that's not really the point of Nuggets though.
A great song. The lead singer insists that he feels fine, yet there is a strongly malevolent and dark undercurrent that becomes more apparent as the song progresses. Is he trying to convince the others that he is feeling fine or is he trying to reassure himself? Could be interpreted as either a pro-drug song or an anti-drug song.
