Great work as usual Herve! It is the strange coincidence. News is talking about the case of Natalie Wood's death tonight. What the most striking is the fact the main three actors passed away by violent death.
This is crazy good. Love that unmistakeably foul air of mid fifties Los Angeles: that stinging smog, only a memory now, created by unleaded gasoline... the soup de jour
September 30th 1955! Its been 55 years today and the Legend Still Lives! I first saw this movie on Easter Sunday 1980 and automatically became one of my favorite all time movies!
to army and gogo, when casting an actor to play a character who is under 18 the call usually goes out for an actor over 18 to play under 18, or over 12 to play under 12 because labor laws forbid working children for and excessive number of hours...say a 36 hour continuous tour. also, anyone on the set who has not completed high school or is not an emancipatsed minor must have a teacher, tutor or guardian unless it is summer break. all the talent, except some extras were over 21.
@Spikesgurl74 Basically, the observatory building and the approach from the parking lot and where the knife fight occurred still look the same on the outside but its very different inside now.
For his time, Mr Dean seemed to be the Man but we have had many years to re-evaluate--he was way too old to be playing a high school kid and anyone can see it now. The large head is painfully obvious to any neutral observer. The acting may have been what fit then in but it does not fit in n'more.
@lumpagogo to this day, older actors play teenage roles, that much hasn't changed. With or without the "large" head, he was still beautiful and I'm sure, I'm not the only one who agrees. His acting was heavily inspired by Marlon Brando, and James Dean's acting inspired many up and coming actors now and then. So, like it or not, "re-evaluate" or not, he is an icon to many. Nothing will change that.
Dean just never looked young on screen--looked old enough to be Sal Mineo father but you're right, many still deify Dean, which is what lots of Americans refuse to stop doing as regards many stars, both living and gone.
@lumpagogo the fact that he looked old on-screen isn't such a big deal. The movie is still great. People enjoyed it back then, as they do now. And also, I'm pretty sure that it's not just "Americans" that deify James or stars both living or dead. It's people around the world. I love James Dean. I think his acting was remarkable. You want bad, awful, and atrocious acting then look at the shit stars we have now, that are starring in films. Now that, my friend, is something you should worry about.
@morrisseyArmy Thank you for defending James Dean. That guy sounds like a lot of other guys who are jealous of James' look and talent. Thank you very much!
@senoritajd awww, no problem. I usually don't like to get in arguments via the internet, because I think they are pointless, but this time I felt it was necessary.
When I was teenager many years ago, a friend and I used to do something dumb. We would take his roadster up to Griffith Observatory, put the car in neutral, and see if we could come down the hill, past the Greek Theatre, and all the way to the bottom without using the brakes.
Spooky - I can remember when the movie first came out, I guess I was 12 then. Last time I was at Griffith Observatory, it struck me that if James Dean's ghost walks anywhere, its here, not Salinas not Marion. Spooky. - jwrit
Well..... this was an excellent compelation of "then & now" photos. 5 Stars dude..... you did an excellent job! I'm a 21 yr old actor and when the director of my last film recommended Rebel to me a year ago I turned into the biggest James Dean fan. He was so real in his roles. He knew exactly how to translate his personal emotional pain into the most profound acting I've ever seen. I want to be like James Dean in all my roles.
Great job Nicholas; I drove up to the Observatory in 1959 with my Black 49 Merc and my buddy took a photo of me were the knife fight had took place; so your production really gave me chills. Thanks; Ric Dean
OMG I HAVE to go there. Im going to cry im not kidding you, this movie means so much too me and im only 16. I think im gonna cry when I go there is it all at the observatory??
Great video, the before and after sequences of Griffith Observatory are great, the Observatory has been under restoration many times and there's been many forest fires at the park, it looks somehow a little different from the 50's but it is a true historical gem in Los Angeles, it's really great been up there, one feels like being on clouds above the city, great tourist attraction. In the 80's they'd do laser shows called "Laserium", it was great going up there at night to see the shows.
I a Dean fan from Scotland and visited the observatory a few years ago but it was closed and under renovation I was gutted but your video gives me what what i missed thanks
FANTASTIC video!!!! I love how you dissolve scenes from the movie into today! Thank you for doing this!!!! Ever thought about doing Marilyn Monroe from "Seven Year Itch"? I'd love to know where that infamous sidewalk grate was.
james dean was just stupid he was driving almost 3x the speed limit on a 30 mph
some random guy stabbed sal and took his money
natalie was killed by her stupid drunk husband on a boat
Again, Jimmy was a cool guy but he did risky, dangerous things so even if not for that accident I'm sure he would have been killed in a different accident...or died of lung cancer by now
Natalie and Sal would be 70 years old if they were alive today..
Thank you for putting this together. Great job!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
James Dean:
1. Over-actor to the max.
2. Had a head size normal for someone 7'4".
3. Was not goodlooking regardless.
4. Looked over 30 but was playing a high school kid.
4. James (Over-rated) Land-Dean.
