Weller deliberately omitted this from the track listing on "All Mod Cons" as he felt embarrassed by it....he wrote it in America about how much he missed his then girlfriend!....I think 33 years later...he probably has nothing to feel embarrassed about or reproach himself for!...An absolute triumph....and played brilliantly here!
@mynameisloader I've seen Gil scott heron and brian wilson live, metallica at reading and some amazing football by arsenal, but to say I had been there, with the comedic fuck up at the beginning, I would happy give my disappointing testicles.
This man made the most exciting music I'd ever heard in my youth, and now he's making it slightly less uncool to be middle aged. Thanks Paul. You're definitely the Ace Face.
@angelusgabrielus1982 I assure you, my friend, of the many great love songs I've heard, over the years, this track, no matter HOW many times I hear it, never fails to make my heart swell as a huge smile forms on my face. It always makes me think of the lady I would love settle down with (a British lady, naturally).
@defpoet28 Yeah, this is lovely song. Also, listen to some Dylan, Love Minus Zero, better poetic lyrics (not as cliched as English Rose), "my love she speaks like silence/without ideals or violence......she knows too much to argue or to judge......she knows there's no success like failure/and that failure's no success at all".
@THthefirst Thanks for the comment. I'm actually not a fan of Dylan. I'll definitely check out Love Minus Zero (never heard of them until now). As for the lyrics to "English Rose," I don't think of them as cliched at all. Just very, very romantic.
@defpoet28 Too late my dear fellow. I married the most beautiful English Rose last year. However, like you, this song too has made me cry since the first time I heard it.
I live reluctantly in Australia and Im soo very homesick - I have this song on my mobile - every time someone calls me - I think of going back to my England Rose - my 'Home'!! There is no better song!!!
@dan32113: sorry mate, I'm actually german, but I'm sure the three lions will get back pretty soon to their English Rose ;-). See ya in the penalty shoot out! SCNR
It was actually on the "All Mod cons" album, but not explicitly mentioned on the sleeve. Weller felt a little embarrased, the shy 19 year old he was, to commit such emotions.
The song is just fucking amazing, the definitive goose pimples song!
I remember this when I was fourteen! He didn't come back!

The guy who shouted "cock" at about 0:30 must have felt like a right tiny prick when the crowd went crazy at the end.

A brilliant song, I think was a B side to one of the Jam's singles, which was rather different to what they did.
I never found it on a studio album but always loved it - This version is even better re: The "cock
